I think that he is talking about the rally that Denver fans had
about 40 people showed up.

He said later he was kidding.
I guess he was reading about it on PFT, and thought it would be funny to tweet it.
That said, he expressed concern to our own Chief Willie the other day about possibly not being re-signed.

I asssume he is talking about this:

off topic, but its kind of annoying that the back arrow key doesn’t get you out of twitter
Shouldn't have to

I think we’ll se a flood of FA signings and re-signings as soon as a CBA is in place.

Since I'm confident Pioli WILL sign Shaun
I thought I'd try out a new signature that is easier for people to see.
Home opponents:
San Diego Chargers L I always think it safer to predict home and home splits for AFC West. But, I’m taking SD to beat us twice and we will beat Denver twice. Oakland is split.
Oakland Raiders W
Denver Broncos W
Buffalo Bills W
Green Bay Packers L Oddly enough, though, I think we have a better chance to beat Packers than Steelers. Just gut feel.
Miami Dolphins W
Minnesota Vikings W The Vikings are on the down slope now and missed their window.
Pittsburgh Steelers L
Road opponents:
San Diego Chargers L
Oakland Raiders L
Denver Broncos W
Chicago Bears W I still think these guys are overrated.
Detroit Lions W although this is an improving team that can surprise – especially if Stafford is alive.
New England Patriots L
New York Jets W
Indianapolis Colts L The Jets and Colts are hard to call. I think we CAN beat both of them but am only calling for one win from these. I picked Jets because of Manning.
9-7
later on, I'll append my mock draft(s)

NO!!!!
it’s just a guess as to why Carr and Gillberry aren’t signed
Current believer in Matt Cassel.. Check with me in two weeks
Gilberry might be worth more to a 4-3 team.
I see trade potential, there.
But I’m not blaming Gilberry for the nickel’s problems against the run, although he isn’t a tie-up-o-linemen 3-4 kind of DE like Smith and the others. He was good to have in 2010, but maybe a more sound 3-4 lineup doesn’t need him to generate pass rush, which was about the extent of his responsibilities.
I call that pretty bold talk, for a one-eyed fat man.
Great point ....
But, Don’t forget that we were in a lot of Nickel , Dime and 4-3 sets throughout 2010. We do have a need a situational, “speed rush” DE who can hold his own on run plays. Though I would love to see fewer " Wholesale Package Substitutions" and more “well rounded” skill sets on our defense.

We'd have a least 10 times the number of fans that showed up for the Champ Bailey rally.
Any excuse for Chiefs fans to dress in the red and gold, breakout the BBQ grills and beer coolers, and have a good time. We could get at least 400 out for that alone.

It started with texting, actually.
Twitter just makes texting a lot more public.
YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!
started with email and IM
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
I disagree about email.
Email was historically written from a full keyboard with no character limitation, and usually no rush to complete it. Not to say there haven’t been poorly written emails, but those are because of other reasons.
Good point about IM, but I still think texting is what made lazy, shorthand messages so universally acceptable.
YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!
The purists will always bitch and the language will ALWAYS evolve toward efficiency.
Especially the English language, which is built to grow.
The only thing that concerns me is how many people who want to communicate with the rest of the world are incapable of formal writing. Their writing and language skills are an expression of their relatively poor reasoning abilities. If you can’t say it right, chances are really good that you’re not clear on what it is…

i remember reading
about a professor (or maybe it was a HS teacher, don’t remember) in SF area that said he is ok with his students turning in reports that contain texting language as long as he can understand it.
What a complete moron. I apologize to all of the teachers on here, but this kind of shit (and the similar earlier support that ebonics received) is why I don’t support teacher’s unions like the one in Wisc. I think the main purpose they serve is to protect teachers from actual performance evaluation. Sorry, inappropriate for AP rant done.

There are different theories on language
I personally hate text language, even in text messages. However, there are theories that the objective of language is communication, and that comprehension is the sole critical factor. It’s a valid viewpoint, and very strongly represented in the linguistic community, although I do disagree with it.

I believe there's merit to such an argument
And honestly, I’m on the same page. But plenty of people smarter than I am, who possess their PhDs in fields like neurolinguistics, sociolinguistic evolutionary theory, and etymologic theory think it’s fine to modify language for purposes of efficiency. Like I said, I don’t agree with those people, because I think there are concerns other than efficiency, but they do have merits.

I'm all for creating a more efficient language.
But text/Twitter is not the place to do it. That’s done out of laziness, not efficiency.
YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!
Sociolinguistic theory would tell you that efficiency comes from common usage
Not from some decision by linguistics experts. An example is contractions. They exist because people spoke them quickly enough that they ran together, not because a group of official arbitrators of language in a tower decided to grant them to the commoners. Words evolve in large part due to efficiency, and efficiency in something like words is usually a result of, well, laziness. What other method of linguist evolution would there be?
Just Harsin around.
by burntorangehorn on Feb 21, 2011 3:44 PM CST up reply actions
Yup. But important matters often require clear language and meaning.
And most tweeters are incapable of it. When I teach calculus, I charge points for not saying what you mean. Usually when students can state what they mean in “the King’s English,” they’re not really clear on what they mean in the first place, and related concepts blur together into one thing that they’ll never understand until they make the fine distinctions that precise langues provides.
I call that pretty bold talk, for a one-eyed fat man.
People learn to speak properly by NECESSITY.
Someone in authority has to refuse to settle for baby talk, else you grow up talking like a baby.
“Wa wa?”
“You mean “Please give me a drink of water?’”
“Uh huh.”
“Then say it.”
Folks wise up pretty quickly when they must. Twitter tells us that nobody’s insisting on anything better.

This is why I refuse to acknowledge communications including the following:
“u”

And so forth. Recently I’ve stopped communicating entirely with some fairly attractive girls who have used that kind of stuff in texting me. Of course, I’m petty and pedantic, so that’s par for the course. I even stopped talking to a really nice girl because she had a very strong carolinian accent that I couldn’t tolerate.

I think there is a difference in short hand and people not knowing how to spell though...
which is what I think is happening with twitter and texting.
And I have read a study that says two people can take a set of data, and with opposite views make that data say what they want it to say. Not saying thats the case here, but it could be some of it.

Yeah, that's absurd.
To be fair, I’ve also heard of teachers/professors turning down work that uses shorthand.
YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!
In math, I try to TEACH them to use shorthand for common phrases that crop up.
Shorthand for existential assertions, such as “There is” or logical connectives like “implies” or quantifiers like “for each” or “for every.” But the work still must read like a sentence. Students start out suspicious, but after that first month, they look back and realize how their minds have opened up because I clamped down on saying what you mean. Better to just say you don’t know than write a bunch of crap that makes no sense.
I call that pretty bold talk, for a one-eyed fat man.
You heard of 1 HS teacher (you don't remember)
that accepts texting language in reports and somehow that equates to saying teachers shouldn’t be allowed to collectively bargain? I agree that if this teacher in SF exists he’s an idiot, but that has nothing to do with the fact that teachers are already severely underpaid for what they do and now some people want to take away their rights to bargain for more money and better benefits. Sigh..
modern union's
actual purpose is to protect and pay the shittiest members as equals to the great ones. Teachers willing to be actual independent performers would get paid more.
Sign a new CBA NOW, you greedy bastards.
It can lead to that. I saw it in union shop I worked in during the '80s.
For $10/hr, there was no way a teenager like me could work hard enough in an unskilled capacity to earn that much (in those days – the steady theft of value thru inflation has never stopped).
I think if they like what they’re doing, the job pays pretty OK for the effort involved. I’m underpaid for my level of training, but I GET TO TEACH! If I were to ply my expertise in mathematics in an industrial setting, it might not be much fun. But for my other skills (language, speech, etc.), the fit is purt’ near perfect for all involved. And I can prepare like a demon during the summer, just by building (fun!) stuff for my classes during the school year to follow, and only spend 2 to 4 hours a day, wherever I choose to be. It’s a good gig.
But you’re right. The union shelters the just and the unjust, alike. Tenure, which many see with suspicion, is the ONE way for the actual TEACHERS to say how the school will be run. It gives us a voice we wouldn’t have, without such due process. You can’t prove a negative, but I know of numerous great ideas mgmt has had over the years that only (reasonably) secure faculty members could have stopped (and DID stop). Nutty as things are, they’d be nuttier without some security for the teachers, who, after all, are the ones working in the trenches.
The BIGGEST problem with teachers, these days, is the many institutions that DO shelter incompetents. And it’s SO easy for a chairperson or appointee with credentials to actually sit in the classroom and see what goes on. This is something that RARELY happens. The kids know who’s for real and who isn’t (sometimes), but that’s a poor substitute for another professional actually visiting the classroom, which is something that is often only done in token ways or not at all, regardless of the rules that are supposedly in place (There are SO many rules nowadays that almost EVERYone’s a violator and NOone is really checking).
Luckily, most folks care about the teaching, and care about standards. And there are things they can do with computers, now, for self-paced learning, tailored to the individual, that a LOT of the basic K-12 stuff can (and will) be learned without much cost. Once the software is written, it’s a matter of having a computer, an Internet connection, and a power source. But we, as a society, have to re-think how we’re gonna babysit our own damn kids, and get ’er done.
The WORST teachers, nowadays, are the touchie-feelie kinds without a brain in their heads. Their kids graduate with this inflated self of sense worth and they KNOW things that just ain’t so. When a kid tells me she LOVED her high school math teacher, there’s a 50-50 chance that she actually learned much.
I call that pretty bold talk, for a one-eyed fat man.
I think the worst ones are the ones who have given up
Whereas I think the ones who do the touchy-feely garbage often have it foisted upon them by the community. They’re taught that their role is not just to educate on subject matter, but to care for the children’s well-being as well. That’s because we as a society have failed to draw a definite enough line in teachers’ roles. Parents expect teachers to maintain discipline, yet will not allow punishment. They expect teachers to ensure social development, yet will not take a more active role themselves or allow teachers to take roles beyond the classroom. I think it’s better for teachers to not have these expectations from parents, but the fact is that parents want their cake and to eat it too. Parents are failing students far more than teachers are, although teachers in general have lost their ways as well IMO.
Just Harsin around.

DC is a classic case
People like to point at DC, which spends 3rd most of any city per student, as evidence that throwing money at a problem doesn’t solve the problem, because DC has some of the worst-performing schools in the nation. And they’re generally right, but not in the way they think they are. They think the problems are with the schools, and while there are definitely enormous problems there, the social problems are the bigger limiting factor. Getting grades simply doesn’t register on most kids’ hierarchy of needs when they’re raised by crack-addicted parents who have simply plunked them in front of a TV their entire childhoods, violent crime is rampant, food is scarce, money is fleeting, and their role models are professional athletes and rappers who tweet worse than Shaun Smith.

yep, very complex
problems there – those are not just DC either
And, if there weren’t a union forcing every single thing and person to be identical then different school systems could find individual ways to measure teacher performance that takes into account the special demands of the situations as appropriate.
Sign a new CBA NOW, you greedy bastards.
Measuring performance is another problem
What metrics would accurately indicate teacher performance? Certainly test scores don’t capture it, because even if a student cares about the test, his or her performance is a cumulative result of all past years of education, and of course there are other factors as well. Comparing students against the previous year’s students of the same grade, which is how satisfactory annual progress is currently measured for NCLB purposes, doesn’t actually measure a teacher’s performance much at all, as it is primarily evaluating a delta between the performance of one class and another. It doesn’t measure “value added” to the current class of students over the course of the school year.
Just Harsin around.

excellent info
Yes, I am “suspicious” about tenure but perhaps I misunderstand it’s benefits. To me, one of the worst things about unions is that longevity (seniority) counts for so mucheverything when it doesn’t necessarily mean the person is good at their job. Tenure seems like the same thing to me.
I will add to assure everyone, that I think teaching is one of our most important jobs and would love to find ways to pay them more. I just tend to believe if “free agency” and individual performance in all jobs rather than group protection. I also understand measurement is difficult because I’m a big believer in the role of parents at home. If they don’t care, the student won’t either and the teacher’s job is much more difficult.

For sake of clarity..... and I love Teachers.
Bonofied wrote…

1st Point; Teachers were paid less than Private Sector workers at one time in my life. However, My Daughter (Teacher in Minnesota) pulls down over $55,000 per year, has all her medical and pension paid for and the District paid for her advanced Degree. When she retires her benefits are considerably more attractive than any that I am aware of in the Private Sector.
2nd Point: Wisconsin Law protects the right of workers in the State. The Governor does not wish to remove the right to bargain for more wages. He does wish to remove the right to bargain for Benefits.
3rd Point: Just as many large Corporations. Negotiators have given Unions huge, costly, long term Benefits in return for concessions on wages. That was great for the short run. Those in Corporate Management or those in Political Office patted themselves on the back and took their bonuses. They did not have to be around to figure out how to manage a budget shortfall years down the road when the payments come due. Let the next administration figure it out.
4th Point: Teachers set a poor example when they (As public employees) conduct an illegal sick out, get fake Doctor’s excuses, abandon their Students and Demonstrate for more, more more. The Wisconsin legislators ( Paid by Public Funds) also set a poor example by refusing to do their jobs. This was the issue during the previous election. The voters voted. But that does not matter to those that just want their way. Let the taxpayers pay the Bill.
5th Point: This applies to current Football negotiations in that the The Teachers Union is used to bargaining with Administrations that they contibuted big bucks to keep in Office. The Players are negotiating with owners who will have to be arround to manage budgets after all the Players and Agents have collected their salaries, bonuses, fees and retired. Owners have to be solvent 10 or 20 years down the road. Large Corporation CEOs and Public Administrations don’t have overhead comming from their pockets and don’t have as much “skin in the game”.
