A Cold War Mounts, Here's Why a Lockout in the NFL Near Certain

As the deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement in the NFL approaches, one can feel a chill in the air as legal maneuvering takes on a Cold War-like tone. Yesterday’s filing to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) by Jeff Pash, the NFL’s general counsel and one of the key point men in the bargaining process, gave a real sense of how far the sides are apart (see the text of the charges). "The NFLPA has engaged in a course of conduct calculated to avoid reaching an agreement with the NFL Management Council (NFLMC)," the filing said. The NFL goes on to say that the "Union has approached these negotiations with no intent to reach agreement through good faith collective bargaining."
