Last year I was really set against drafting Eric Berry in the fifth overall spot. Early on I decided that Joe Haden was what we needed. Another CB that would give QB's fits. Then as I evaluated some more the LB Brandon Graham was who I liked as we really need some pass rush. But then later still, it was Rolly McClain as an ILB, but his supposed medical issue threw me off. Then about 3 weeks before the draft I discovered the best pick of all. The guy I wished we drafted instead of Berry. Who is that you wonder, follow me and jump!
This kid I wanted fell big time, and became a big time player after the Cowboys drafted him. Dez Bryant is his name. I couldn't believe it the drafts best talent at WR who showed an incredible ability to make BIG plays. The best play maker since Tim Brown in my estimation fell all the way to the twenties. I couldn't believe it. And we passed him for a safety. A friggin safety. Unreal.
Well Berry played pretty well after the club figured out how to use him and after he gained some experience. After watching his ability as an athlete which is rare, I am OK with him as a Chief, like I gotta a choice. There happens to be another kid with that same rare ability that both Dez and Berry exhibit in this draft that is on the cusp of moving into round 1. He reminds me of Dez, albeit in a slightly smaller package and labeled as an under achiever. Who is this guy?
The kid from the U, as in the University of Miami. His athleticism is rare, even in a sport full of athletes. This cat broke a Hall of Fame players record, some of you may remember Michael Irvin as a Cowboy but he played his college ball at the U. "Hank" Hankerson is how he is known and I for one wouldn't be all out of whack if he was our twenty first pick. The way I see it is we have four big needs to fill and WR is one of them.
Now, I am on record for a OT to take over for BRich. I could also see a LB to take over Vrabel's position at 21. And like Hank, Taylor is moving up the boards and could be our pick there. I think Hankerson is the big sleeper pick in this draft. It's his abilities as an athlete that has me excited. Also he put up pretty good numbers for an under achiever breaking Irvin's records.
Now I know none of us can predict what Pioli is going to do. Who he picks where. Trade up, trade down, trade into next year, just so many guesses. What I believe is we are going to get a good football player and it could surprise us by not being any of the aforementioned guys. Personally, I value play makers who score just a little bit ahead of guys who don't. So will Hank sleep his way into KC? Don't know but Go Chief's!!!
