Tamba Hali: Why He Won't be a Chief Past 2011
This is an article I wrote over at Bleacher Report. Just so you know, I hope I am wrong about this.

Bleacher Report doesn’t have a good reputation as a sports website. There is more community here as well.
I don’t normally say stuff like that but Bleacher Report has an accuracy/coherent writing problem with other writers.
I don't that's the case ... I think it's a matter of Nali wants a lot of $$$ and Pioli doesn't want to give him the contract his agent is asking for ... I think it's a contract dispute, not "long term plans" dispute
Could it be because the Chiefs do not have long term plans for him?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Agreed
If the Chiefs are truly worried about injuries, they have some options. They could trade him this off-season while his value is high and before a drop in production because of those injuries. However, the Chiefs could also bank on a drop in production from those injuries and hope to sign him cheaper later.
The best idea I see is to let him play on the franchise tag. See how he progresses and if he’s worth the money. They can always use the franchise tag on him again next year. But I don’t see a scenario of Tamba dropping in production or some team offering a blockbuster deal for him, so sooner or later, he’ll be a Chief for many years.

A friend of mine from college
is an assistant athletic trainer for the Chiefs (which was awesome inside info when Leggett and Sheffield got injured). Anyway, he has told me horror stories about Hali’s feet and how he has no idea how that man can even walk. I dont know specifics about it but it’s not anything I find encouraging.
Your eyes tell you more than any statistics can.
They had a peice on him once about his feet.
They look weird because they are very flattened out apparently something very common with people growing up in the conditions in Africa Tamba did. Walking around in barefeet for 15 or more years makes you feet look a little strange to soft North Americans like us.

I think this is very well written
I agree with a lot of your points, points that were overlooked before.
I think he will get a long term deal. Here are some of my thoughts.
the Chiefs re-signed two of the other must-have players in Jamaal Charles and Derrick Johnson. Why wasn’t Hali re-signed
I believe there is one simple reason that Hali was not signed like the other two. Hali’s agent was very smart. You could see early in the year that Hali was going to have a career year. You bank on your player. Hali finished with a great season and will now get a much better deal than he would have if he signed earlier. It was a gamble Hali and his agent took, and it paid off. It was said Hali didn’t want “the distraction” of signing a new deal during the season, but that really means "we will just play it out and see where we are after the season.
The fact that the Chiefs did not re-sign him makes me feel like they know something about these injuries that they are not letting anyone else know about.
Hali never missed a game all season. All players have injuries, and if anything he proved he is the kind of guy Haley wants.
There is also the myth that “the Pioli and Patriot way” is not to pay players to big contracts. The truth is that they don’t pay descending players big contracts, and that is the correct way to do business (please refer back to King Carl signing 2.7). Pioli and the patriots have shown that they will sign good young ascending players to long term deal worth significant money.
In April 2006, Seymour signed a three-year, $30 million contract
In March 2010, Vince Wilfork to a 5-year deal worth $40 million.

absolutely agree
he’ll get a new long-term deal, that will be big, but not huge
Prediction: KC will not draft a LB before the 3rd round
I agree
but the Patriots way was also to move players while their value was at its highest point…like Deion Branch. They found someone dumb enough to overpay for him and ship out a boatload of draft picks. The Pats used the 24th pick from Seattle for Brandon Meriweather, traded their original 28th pick to San Fran (who took Joe Staley) in return for San Fran’s 2008 1st round pick, which turned out to be 7th overall and they traded that to New Orleans (Sedrick Ellis) for the 10th overall pick (Jerod Mayo) and the 78th pick (Shawn Crable). It’s a domino effect but it shows that no one player is too important to not move. Look at the backlash over trading Jared Allen yet it netted Branden Albert and Jamaal Charles.

Sitting and thinking....
After sitting and thinking about this post while I drank a Corona, I had an idea! Tag Hali, and offer him in a straight-up swap to AZ for Fitz. On the other hand, maybe I need to think some more, or have another Corona.
