Thomas Jones Can Move Up On The All-Time Rushing List

Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones is going to be in the headlines this weekend because of his affiliations with the New York Jets but he also has the chance to move on up in the record books.

As Jones mentioned in his conference call with the New York media, he's 11 yards shy of taking a couple of jumping two players on the all-time rushing yards list.

20. Ricky Watters: 10,643

21. Jamal Lewis: 10,607

22. Tiki Barber: 10,449

23. Eddie George: 10,441

24. Thomas Jones: 10,438

(Note: I had no idea Jamal Lewis was so high on this list.)

So probably sometime early in Sunday's game he'll pass George for the 23rd spot all time and eight more yards after that he'll pass Tiki, landing in the 22nd spot all-time.

No. 20 doesn't seem that far away -- 205 yards -- but Jones has just 325 yards rushing in the first 12 games. He would need an incredible increase in production over the final four games to hit it.

six (-2) plus 8(2) and a breakout five yarder.

No offense to the poster.

…but I’m not sure it’s possible for me to care less about where Thomas Jones falls on the all-time list. I’m just sick and tired of 2nd and 9.5 after he carries the ball.

that "sweep" requires a RT

that can run-block, a pulling center not on AARP, and a LG that can handle a +300# DL in space. Since we have all that, I too, cannot understand why we keep losing yards on that play and have yet to make the corner.

Ladies and Gentlemen, here are YOUR STANZI CITY CHIEFS!!

by neiowakcfan on Dec 8, 2011 1:27 PM CST up reply actions

I've never heard anyone complain about Barry's run blocking

Nor Lilja’s ability to block in space or Weig’s ability to pull.

It’s Barry’s pass blocking, and Lilja/Weigmann’s lack of power that is their weak points.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

So break down the sweeps to the right side

and show me how the defense gets to the back behind the line of scrimmage and tell me how it’s not the line’s fault.

Maybe we should stop drinking the “OL is good enough” Kool-Aid. Where did we break down in the playoffs, at home, against the Ravens? One good run (well-blocked) over left guard for a TD. That’s it. It wasn’t a right sweep.

I think B-Rich is a turnstyle in pass-blocking, too. Lilja and Weigmann are pulling lineman. Weigmann did quite well eight years ago when he had pro-bowlers around him. Lilja did OK in Indy, when he had to pass block for 0.8 seconds.

Anyhow, show me how the right sweep breaks down. It’s not on Battle. All I’m saying. Sorry to point out another O-line deficiency that Andrew Luck could fix.

safties won't crowd the line

Because they will respect the fact our qb can make throws down the field.Having a franchise qb helps ALL areas of the team, not just the passing game

they won't come up as much up to stop the run

Thus,it is now easier to run right ,left, middle because db’s are now worried about a qb that can burn them up top.And then when they come up to stop the run,you beat them over the top.Ya,a running play isn’t going work that well when a defense knows your qb can’t throw more than 50 yards down field. They can concentrate on taking the run away.A great passing game ,is just as important to the running game and vice versa

In nomeni parti et fili spiritus sancti

by saints_chiefsfan1979 on Dec 9, 2011 12:39 AM CST up reply actions

Yes, I know that

But again, if the original premise is that the offensive line sucks at run blocking, a safety being near the LOS of back in coverage won’t matter all that much.

The Colts sucked at running the ball for years despite having Pey-Pey

The colts had a great running game when edgeren james was there

In fact,James either led ,or was in the top 5 in rushing for 4 years at Indy. It’s only been the past few years where the Colts have struggled to run the ball.If you look at Mannings numbers during that time, they suffered as a result

In nomeni parti et fili spiritus sancti

by saints_chiefsfan1979 on Dec 9, 2011 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, when they had a good RB, they were good at running the ball

Which shows that you need more than a stud QB. Seriously, we’re going round and round for no reason.

Does a great QB help you run the ball? Absolutely

Does a great QB fix the SPECIFIC issues that were originally brought up here (O-line ability in space, and one on one with bigger defenders)? Absolutely not.

Seriously, I don’t know why you’re fighting me on this one.

I know why

Because, with all the faults the colts have..they were 10-6….LET ME REPEAT ..10 -6 ,WITH Peyton Manning in the lineup.Without him, they are 0 AND 12!!!! With virtually the same players. Minus the qb on the roster.QB is everything in the NFL these days.I can go look up stats ,but, you know the end result

And Ray Lewis has been overrated for about 2 years now. He’s not even in the top 5 best ILB’s in the game at this point.

The better question is how could Ricky Stanzi

I honestly think it did start out that way

as soon as Manning went down, they knew they had no sb chances, cause I just dont see how the qb going down can make your defense so bad, and Im tired of people saying they are built to play with a lead thats bs they still have to stop people

and I think the nfl needs to do like the nba with the draft lottery to keep teams from doing it, because its embarrassing to both the league and the team

by banshee_01 on Dec 8, 2011 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

A question for my good friend Craig in Calgary

Are you as sick of watching him run the ball as you were of LJ or is TJ worse in your opinion?

I'll be throroughly pissed off if he's on the roster next year

If Haley didn’t feel obligated to give the man so many carries just because he’s a veteran, I wouldn’t mind him being in the mix, but that just hasn’t been the case. He gets too many carries just because he’s “earned it”.

by joplin chiefs fan on Dec 8, 2011 12:53 PM CST reply actions

The Only way Jones gets 205 yards is----

If our offensive line can get a serious push on every snap that Jones has the ball. If the line can get about 7 yards of push and then Jones runs into his own man, then he may get the 205 yards this year. Easy to predict, sad.

How does Gaither being cut

have anything to do with B. Rich? LT does not equal RT. Gaither pretty much refused to play RT. Let’s look beyond a workmanlike performance against the Jags with RB help on pass rushes before we scratch our brow too much on cutting Gaither.

Granted, B. Rich must go, but Gaither was not the answer at RT.

Jamal Lewis did have a few seasons where he rushed for 1900 yards+

But other than that, he was a rather mediocre RB.

I can now say this with a straight face, and it will be accurate: Tim Tebow is a better QB than Matt Cassel.

He's fine

He’s still a good running back. When the opposing team’s only focus is on stuffing the box and just daring us to throw….course’ our running backs are going to get stuffed everytime they run the ball. If I were a d coordinator playing the Chiefs, I would force Palko to throw it 50+ times…

nothing about this year has been fun to watch… even that first game when we had everyone…

But truth be told, this guy is a borderline HOF player. He is 1 of the most phyisical backs in the league, yet since 2003 he has only missed 3 games with injury. In a day where players are missing games with sore throats,he is the personification of the word warrior.Congratulations Thomas Jones for all you have accomplished. You have earned it
