How Should The Chiefs Approach the 2012 Off Season?

The Chiefs are going to have a real busy off season this year, just how they did a few years back, when they hired Todd Haley, who was just fired a few weeks ago. There are a lot of holes on their roster, but there are some players who will be free agents, and draft choices, who would be able to fill those wholes.

DRAFT:

The Chiefs offensive line was constantly giving up sacks this year, and a good amount of them have been coming from OT Barry Richardson. Richardson's ciontract expires this year, and he may be good on the roster for depth, but not as a starter. So I think they should use their 1st round pick, on OT, Jonathan Martin, From Stanford. Martin Weighs in at 305, and is 6-6. He'd be able to make an immediate impact, and give Kyle Orton some time to make good throws.

Second, I think that Javon Belcher, MLB, who starts for the Chiefs now, isnt getting the job done. He's good for a backup and someone to give people a rest, but not a starter. In the 2nd round, there should be a decent group of MLB's there, and my favorite is Dont'a Hightower, from Alabama. He''s a fairly quick MLB, and would definitely help their pass rush, and coverage.

For the third Round, There's a lot of ways the Chiefs can go in this round, but I think they should use this pick to compliment Jamaal Charlea in the running game. The Chiefs need somebody who can run in between the tackles, and give Charles a rest on short yardage plays. The Draft is loaded with young RB's, but I like Lamar Miller or Montee Ball. One of these 2 may not be there by the 3rd round, but one of them will. Montee Ball rushed for about 1,800 yards, and 32 touchdowns. He was a Heisman Finalist in 2011. Miller Rushed for 1,300 yards, and 9 touchdowns. Despite the big gap in yards and TD's, Miller is projected to get drafted before, so Ball Might fall with the Chiefs in the 3rd round. He'd be a great acquisition.

In the rest of the draft, I think the Chiefs need some depth at the TE position, Defensive line (which should be taken care of in free agency) and depth at CB.

FREE AGENTS:

There have been a ton of rumors swirling that if the Chiefs promote Interim HC (head coach) Romeo Crennel to the official Head Coach position, that they could bring in Offensive Coordinator and former Broncos HC in as the offensive coordinator. Yesterday, WR Brandon Lloyd, said that he will practically go to whatever team Mcdaniels goes to. So if the Chiefs hire Mcdaniels, Lloyd would be coming to. The Chiefs then would have the Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston, Jonathan Baldwin, and Brandon Lloyd, who are all good WR's. Bowe's contract expires too. I would expect them to stay with Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, and Lloyd, and apply the Franchise Tag to Bowe, and see if he can prove himself in the 2012 season. Also, yesterday Michael Lombardi reported that the Chiefs will try to re-sign Kyle Orton and bring him back next year, as the Starting QB. If that's so, there's another reason that Lloyd would come here, because he played with Orton in Chicago, and Denver. In training camp, when Orton was on the trade block this year, Lloyd defended him saying that he was a great QB. also, Lloyd grew up in Kansas City. Sounds pretty convincing. So if I'm the Chiefs, This is what I'd do:

Promote Crennel to permanent Head Coach, Hire Mcdaniels as OC, sign Brandon Lloyd, apply Franchise tag to Bowe.

The Chiefs pass rush has been great at times, and bad at others. Tamba Hali and rookie Justin Houston have been racking up most the sacks this year, and only 1 sack has come from their starting defensive lineman. Kelly Gregg, who's contract is up this year, is expected to retire, or be let go by The Chiefs. They Do have rookie Jerrell

Powe, and Allen Bailey, who have shown signs of life, but may not be ready to start. Then Comes in the free agents.Jason Jones, who played for the Tennessee Titans this year, is going to be a free agent if not re-signed, and he would be a great addition to their offensive line. He Racked up 3 sacks and 27 tackles, which are actually good numbers for a DT, considering your job is to eat up blocks for the linebackers to make the play. He would definitely be a good addition to the Chiefs pass rush.

Brandon Carr

Brandon Carr, the Chiefs starting CB, is going to be a free agent if not re-signed. He is having arguably one of the best years of his 5 year career, with 3 int. and 43 tackles. After an INT, he flashed up the "pay me" sign, and I don't blame him for it. If they were to lose him, they would have Javier Arenas starting along with Star Brandon Flowers. Arenas has been hideous in coverage this year. He has been getting picked on by every QB, and does not have starting potential. He's a good kick and Punt returner, but not a starting CB. Re-signing him would be one of the smartest things to do in the whole offseason.

There are a lot more things that'd have to be done for the Chiefs to be a super bowl contender in 2012, but these will definitely help them in the long run. Be free to share your thoughts ( agrees/disagrees ) and opinions on how the Chiefs should spend their Money this off season in the comment section.
