Go Raiders?
The Chiefs are well positioned going forward in the AFC West. While we all know we have holes, we also boast talent at many positions and look to have an arrow pointing up as we head into the fourth year of the Pioli regime.
The rest of the west isn't so lucky. The Chargers are aging and still underperforming and look to lose at least Norv Turner (new Chiefs' OC, anyone) and maybe AJ Smith, too. That's going to trigger a couple of years of rebuilding, by which time the core of their team will be retired or playing elsewhere. The Broncos are still feeling out the rebuild that McDaniels started (so pitifully) and are now stuck with Tebow's mediocre skillset and unlikely heroics for at least a year if not more. If he fails to develop, there may still be another head coach or two in Denver's pursuit of greatness as well. And the Raiders, while probably the best of the three on paper going into 2012, have hitched their future, along with half of their top picks the next two years, to an aging Carson Palmer. He's not what he once was, and it's almost impossible to see him playing well enough to be worth a 1st and a 2nd round pick. I see a couple years of past-his-prime, interception-rich mediocrity which will eventually cost Jackson his job and send Oakland back to the drawing board as well.
If Crennel can right the ship long-term as well as he did in his first couple weeks, the top spot in this division for the next 3 to 5 years is ours for the taking! We have high draft picks, a low salary cap, and a good bit of improvement already built in with the return of injured players. If we keep Orton or even if Cassel can just be solid enough to keep us competitive until a better QB can be groomed, the sky is the limit.
The Raiders can give the Chiefs another little boost this weekend if they whip the Chargers while we beat the Broncos. If the Chiefs win and the Chargers lose, both teams would finish 7-9 and by virtue of division record, the Chiefs would get third place in the west and the Chargers fourth. Normally, the fourth place schedule is a bit easier, but this year that's not the case. The AFC West plays the AFC North (the Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, and Browns... the best division in the AFC this year and likely next year, too) and the NFC South (Saints, Falcons, Carolina, and the Bucs... last years division champ is the easy game!) It's going to be rough, to say the least, but I stillthink the Chiefs are in the best situation to handle it. Add in six games of division play, and you are left with two games decided by division finish. Third place this year will get the Jaguars and either Dolphins or Bills, and fourth place gets Indy and either the Dolphins or Bills. Assuming either Manning is back next year, or replaced by Andrew Luck, it would definitely be a boost to get the Jags. We will all be playing four playoff teams from this year (five if the Bengals make it) and adding Indy to SD's slate will make them and Oakland (who would be playing the Texans and Patriots in this scenario) fight the hardest road to the West title in 2012.
Plus, SD losing it's last two games en route to missing the playoffs for the second straight year might be the straw that breaks AJ Smith's back and sends him packing with Turner next week. That would trigger an even deeper rebuild for the Chargers than if Smith survives...
Obviously the Chiefs need to take care of their own business and beat the Donks, but I'll also be pulling for the hated Raiders as I watch the scores crawl at the bottom of my screen...

Hello nmchief - how's the weather down in 'Cruces?
Another reason to pull for the Raiders..
If they prevail, us beating the Broncos will mean something!

Good points.
I will not cheer for the Raiders. But I will clap very slowly and sarcastically if they do win.

If the Raiders and Chargers tie, I guess that would give us fourth place. And maybe a slightly higher draft pick...?
I’ve been looking forward to AJent Smith’s downfall ever since he fired Marty. Even though he did us a big favor with that.

Not much higher, though
If we lose, we pick 9 or 10. If we win, probably 12 or 13. We lose the tiebreaker to all the potential 7-7 teams except Chicago, so we pick behind anybody but them.
sooner or later, God'll cut you down...
Thank you, sir.
In return, we of Raider Nation will bring out the voodoo Tebow dolls and Priest Holmes jerseys and pull for you.
I would sacrifice the draft pick for third place schedule
Jax and most likely Buffalo I will take all day over Miami and Indy next year. Prob could beat them all but Id rather take my chances with the first two.
Could go either way.
Buffalo is a game up, but they face the Pats. If they lose and Miami beats the Jets, Miami is third. But even if third gets Jax and Miami that’s way better than Indy and Buffalo.
sooner or later, God'll cut you down...
Basing future strength of schedule on the past never pans out.
Last year many here were overlooking Detroit and Buffalo and had Chicago, Green Bay, and Indy as sure losses. Indy is not one Peyton Manning away from being good again. Indy is broken.

That's partially true
There are always surprise teams, both good and bad. But who do you think is going to make the playoffs this year and then suck next year? The Steelers? Ravens? Saints? Falcons? Indy might not jump back to 11 wins (although they probably will in that division) but they are a real good bet to jump back to being better than Jax…
I’m not trying to say that strength of schedule is everything, but it’s even more short-sighted to proclaim it as meaningless. There are exceptions, but the rule is that good teams one year stay relatively good, average teams remain relatively average, and bad teams will struggle to get much better.
Last year the Chiefs rode one of the easiest schedules in the league to a division title, and this year had one of the toughest, and are looking at 6 or 7 wins.
Basing future strength of schedule often (not always, but very often) pans out…
sooner or later, God'll cut you down...
Bronco fan here...
What I find exciting about the conversation is that the entire (most-except SD) AFC West seems to be improving. I want to get back to the “good ol’ days” when the AFC West was the strongest division in football. I hope that the Cheifs improve and force us to become better ourselves. I don’t want anymore AFC West divisions won with 8-8 records. It’s time to dominate again like in the 80’s/90’s. So good luck with your “rebuild” my friends (or foes) and let’s get to a point where we are both playing for Superbowls every year. Here’s to a fair and healthy game on Sunday..
with all due respect.. tebow lover.. :P

I made no reference to Tebow...
in my post. It actually was respectful and intelligent. So you are saying you prefer when the division sucks and 8-8 teams make it?
Well, you may get your wish…
ooh buddy
You are definitely going to see the Chiefs improve drastically next year with the addition of Berry, Charles, Moeaki, Siler, and the draft.
Chiefs are definitely running the AFC West next year, people have forgotten that Berry is our second best defensive player, and Charles is our best offensive weapon. Good luck to the broncos improving next year, they will need it.
Maybe...
You’ll need to figure out the QB position because I personally don’t think either Orton or Cassel are the answer. And a decision on coaching will be helpful. But you do have some young talent.
heck no. AFC West has looked better this year, but id like to see a KC Win, a Raiders loss, and a Bronco playoff berth off a 3 game losing streak
that =awesome.
that forces elway to hate life. and keep tebow.
if denver gets beat by KC, and oakland wins, tebow can get shipped out with a lot less resistance.
Pay Brandon Carr/Romeo
Team Colquitt
I think they are stuck with him no matter what happens Sun
This whole thing is almost too perfect. He kept getting miracle wins until Elway finally endorsed him and Fox settled in to just trying to develop him, and then tanked. There’s no QB for Denver in the draft who could unseat Tebow, and he’s both too well paid and too popular with the fans to replace with a free agent (who would they even bid for? Orton? hahahaha) so they are just going to have to take the lumps that come as Ds force him to pass and try to teach him. I bet they can’t get out of him for two offseasons.
sooner or later, God'll cut you down...
I'll take the chance that Tebow's replacement isn't much good
in exchange for not having the first week of playoffs ruined by constant “TEBOW’S IN THE PLAYOFFS” exclajaculations.

No thanks
I’d rather watch the raiders get their ass handed to them by the Chargers and continue their streak of not having a winning season.
As for who we match up with next year – I’ll take the tougher schedule – I feel it makes the team better to play tougher competition.
