Chiefs' current advantage: Flexibility
It is clear that the Chiefs needs, though not in this particular order, are found at: QB, NT, OL, RB, ILB
The beauty of the Chiefs having needs is that they are a young team with a whole lot of cap space. We don't have too many guys to re-sign or worry about for paying up for big time contracts, especially with that beautiful FT just sitting there. With so much cap space on top of a young and talented team, we have the flexibility to do whatever we want in the draft, or take free agency to the woodshed. In my dream scenario we could do both.
Personally, I think it is perfectly viable to "sell the farm" so to speak in getting a franchise quarterback in the draft. Getting rid of this years and next years' first round picks, along with some later rounds would not be an issue, because with so much cap space we can afford to go out and sign a top-notch players to plug in where we need them. Inevitably, I take this stance as a staunch RGIII supporter. The guy has it. He is accurate, can move in the pocket, has an amazingly quick release, and is very intelligent, on top of the fact that he's a winner.
Though all of the need positions are addressable in the draft with solid talent available, FA can take us a long way.
For RB's, Michael Bush and several other 230+ pounders will be there for the taking, and I feel that we could get one fairly cheap in FA
At OL, Carl Nicks, Ben Grubbs, and Demetrius Bell all come to mind as free agent OL that we might have to pay a little more for, but will come in as elite players.
NT could be addressed with Paul Soliai, and Abrayou Franklin is also going to be back on the market.
At LB, Barrett Ruud would be a solid pick to add veteran depth and tackling ability.
With a year under Crennell working on the defense (if he stays), and a full offseason, this team could be a juggernaut that still has 7 mil in cap space come next September.
I have issues with discussing these things so early, but how can we help it? It is fun and exciting to imagine the draft and FA falling into place perfectly. There are many scenarios to play out that will determine our fate. Can we win this week? What happens if St. Louis gets the #1? What the hell are the Browns and Jags going to do with their picks? What are we going to do with our QB's? Will Carr get resigned? Will Bowe get the FT? Too much to think about. I guess that's one good thing about the long offseason.

I hear ya bro. And I approve of your strategy. Except I am in the Andrew Luck camp moreso than RG3.
This will be an interesting time, the next 4 to 5 months and since we aren’t going to the playoffs it ain’t early at all. If ya been reeadin it has occurred to most of us as you a variety of posts on it. However, your view point and summation is worded well enough to help many in the Kingdom of the KC Chief’s understand that we have an opportunity that is not likely to be this advantageous again anytime soon. Pioli is a bright guy, except we haven’t any clues if he thinks like we do.
Personally...
I am hoping to god that Indy beats Jacksonville this week. It would allow St. Louis to have the 1st pick, which they are going to trade. And Mel Tucker, the current interim head coach of Jacksonville, could become our defensive coordinator after not getting that job. And think this wins the Luck sweepstakes: our 2012 1st, 2013 1st, D Bowe, 2012 & 2013 4th, 2012 7th. Elite QBs are necessary if you want that Lombardi Trophy(s). We have got to out bid everyone if that pick goes up for sale. We can recover our 4th this year by trading Cassel and we can replace Bowe’s offensive yardage by signing Brandon Lloyd. The TDs production can hopefully come from an improved Baldwin.
I doubt St. Louis would let him go
they spent a 5th rounder on him. Hard to believe they would only use it on a half a season, a season that was oviously going nowhere.
It's Orton-Mania in Kansas City!
Well...
if they trade for Bowe, I doubt they are going to pay them both. And giving up a 5th rounder doesn’t mean they have to commit to them. They will get a mid rounder back anyway when they trade the first pick. I have to think they would love to have Bowe, someone who can get you yards after the catch. Bradford needs all the help he can get, plus they are both young and could be a great tandem for years, opposed to Lloyd who just turned 30. I could see Lloyd signing here because he is from KC and his OC McDaniels might come here.
Totally Agree!
This is a QB leauge now and if you get the chance to get Luck or RG3 you have to do it…and dont forget there will be an extra pick if Orton signs elsewhere

good post, well worded and I agree with your summation. We are in a peculiar place
cap wise, compared to most and draft wise, sitting close to the top 10, then to have as we do some attractive trade bait as will. Who really knows what this market is going to cost trading up, it;s all speculatory, but I really wish Scotty gets involved.
RGIII might not be that much to get
some teams will be scared off some by bust potential as they start their own rebuilds.
RGlll may be the 2nd ranked QB but may last as late as 4th or 5th pick in the 1st.
1st Luck
2nd Kalil
3rd Claiborne or RGlll
4th RGlll, Blackmon or OT, OG, Richardson pick value = 1800 points.
5th Maybe RGlll slips this far.
6th
7th
8th
9th Projected Chiefs spot = 1350 points, 2nd round = 490 pts, 3rd = 225 pts.
With the right partner a trade up could cost as little as a 2nd rounder. Maybe another later round if the partner plays hardball. To move up to 3rd spot would cost a second and maybe a 2nd from next year.

Then again the wage scale won't be as high so...
an OG or RB may go higher in draft because the hit on the salary structure won’t be as great.

I think his lack of taking snaps under center and being in a spread will keep teams cautious
But if he last to the Browns they will take him. I see us having to trade up to 4th to get him
