Vision and Identity

The Kansas City Chiefs to date have averaged 13.7 (31st) points per game. While the Chiefs Defense has surrendered 22.3 (20th) points per game, many of those points were scored by the enemy on short fields created by the Offense. The Chiefs also showed an inability to score on a short field themselves when in the Red-Zone. Scott Pioli can answer the 2012 Chiefs riddle in numerous ways via re-signing our own Free Agents and those of other teams this off-season. We have been told and or came to believe that we made extravagant bids on some free agents in the past only to be rejected. 2012 will have the same results on certain key players we wish to have, so I have tried to answer the riddles sans Free-Agents. If we get em Great, if not so what.

I do expect that we will Re-sign our key Free agents Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr. We also re-sign Le'Ron McClain, Kyle Orton, Jovan Belcher, and Barry Richardson.

  • David DeCastro will take over Left or Right Guard depending on Jon Asamoah. Both played Right Guard in College. Ryan Lilja will become depth in this scenario.
  • Dwayne Allen will supplant Pope as the backup TE, and compete with Moeaki for starts, and will allow us to cut the chaff in the position.
  • JM Johnson and D Johnson will become a superb ILB Duo, Jovan Belcher will become depth if re-signed.
  • Matt McCants along with Tony Bergstrom, Mims and Richardson get to all compete for two-three jobs. Good luck guys :)
  • Kellen Moore? why yes, he gets to compete with Ricky Stanzi. While Matt Cassel gets to compete with Kyle Orton for the starters job. Todd Haley would be so Proud.
  • Dan Herron takes over that Thomas Jones role and competes for playing time with a possibly rejuvenated Jack Battle.

Depth? We have some depth. I hope so

Whatever happens with Kyle Orton the Kansas City Chiefs identity is of a Running team. Selecting Three Offensive Lineman, a TE that excels at both the run block and the catch, and a solid Running Back will allow the Chiefs to pound the ball. Kyle Orton at QB will allow us to catch up in games we get behind the clock on.

That is my Vision of the 2012 Chiefs and addresses the Identity that we have lacked this season.

What do you see as the Identity of these Kansas City Chiefs?

Steve, I absolutely LOVE you "vision" and foresight ... and I hereby elect YOU as the new GM of the Kansas City Chiefs as we move forward from this point

you will, of course, be soundly reviled for not trading away umpteen draft picks and current warm bodies for TCQBWSNBN (or for RG3 for that matter) but THIS is by far my preferred scenario …

Orton starts, Cassel can go fly a kite remain as backup if so desired and our QBotF, be it Stanzi or Moore or someone else, can continue to learn and develop … meantime the Chiefs go on to again show everyone How The West Was Won and re-establish dominance in the AFC for years to come

I think DeCastro is great...

but I want his teammate. The KC identity will not change until we someone elite under center. The 3 options for that this offseason are Luck, RG3, and maybe Manning. Chiefs have to do everything their power to land one of those 3 players. My vote is that if Indy wins this weekend go after Luck, if they lose go after Manning. All else fails go after Griffen. That fails, stick w/ Cassel and develop Stanzi.

by Crown Chief on Dec 28, 2011 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, love the Allen pick too...

but I doubt we can land him in the 2nd. I bet we could get Fleener in the 3rd.

by Crown Chief on Dec 28, 2011 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

I agree...

he is a big WR, but so is Finley in Greenbay. I would rather have Allen, but I think Fleener offers good value in the 3rd.

OK. I'll shoot at the holes I see.

Too high for TE and ILB. Rather go with trenches or perimeter there in the 2nd. I think they’re one better DB away from being ready to go high for ILB.

Just generalities, of course. A man who knows his stuff can (and should) defy general rules, in specific situations.

You raise a good point about stealing FAs from other teams, though. There’s no guarantee Pioli can seal the deal on a steal.

would of ≠ would've

by hmills110 on Dec 28, 2011 8:02 PM CST reply actions

will have to be perimeter

The Tackles are not awesome once Martin comes of the board.
Zebri Sanders versus The best TE? I take the TE who can help the RT and catch the ball.

The CB’s are all 190 lbs, we got flowers, so no luck either way

by Steve_Chiefs on Dec 28, 2011 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

how's the crop at Safety position this year?

S/CB depth … would be nice, I think, after OLine, but in MY mind the OLine should be #1 priority

Prof thinks 2nd is too high for TE? perhaps, guess it depends on who’s around or not, I’d just as soon get a VERY good TE for depth and versatility behind Moeaki, even a TE/T/G guy who MAY not be “the best” at any one position but has the ability and smarts and versatility to provide QUALITY depth anywhere along the OLine

With Berry and Lewis?

I wouldn’t draft an early round guy. The Question is do you roll with Berry and his backups or leave QB, RB of the draft card?

Maybe a UDFA can fill that need

by Steve_Chiefs on Dec 28, 2011 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

of course look at the FA crop ... and I don't think we should (or can afford to) take one early

you and I and Prof and many, many others are on board with the “build the line(s) first” train (and we don’t want THAT derailed, now do we!)

if nothing else ditch Sabby for someone younger with speed and smarts, even if not from the top rounds (and I love McGraw but he’s not getting any younger, has to happen sooner or later)

Hudson’s looking like he’s developing nicely, Tamba still has a few very good years left, and DJ as well … either a “swing” guy at OLB as depth and/or future or immediate ILB upgrade to and that group should be rock solid for 3-5 more years

ok, so ...

Albert (5) – DeCastro® – Hudson (2) – Asamoah (3) – Maneri (3) – Moeaki (3)

not that I expect Maneri to start next year, who knows … and DeCastro is a “let’s pretend we get a super-rookie to start in place of Lilja” filler name for now

that’s what our OLine could look like in 2012 with a VERY young interior that has the potential to be awesome for years … oh my, yes, I am TRULY enjoying this thought

I like it

very well thought out draft. I especially like the BOOM-Heron pick in the 5th. What I don’t see is depth at S. I can live with Belcher and Siler duking out the ILB spot if it means we could grab a stout S prospect in the 3rd like Robert Lester or Antonio Allen.

I think that would be huge, especially because it would mark the end of Sabby, Washington, and Langford. McGraw is still a weak point, but he’s night and day better than the above 3. And that’s an awful thing. Rec’d.

RG3, its easy as ABC.

I was actually worried about McCants being the answer

hence a double down with another Tackle.

With only Albert signed for 2012, two drafted tackles and Mims would not be the best answer, competing with Richardson. Yes, 4 guys competing with the knowledge you got Two TE’s to help if need be in the gameplan. alas yes a Safety would be nice

Good post! and i agree we need a Vision

We have been all over the place the last 3 years and i agree 100 percent on the idea u are attempting to implement.
The only change i would say is I would skew more picks to the defense but I like all your picks and love the 2 TE sets and u got GREAT value in each round which i think is key over reaching. As I say that the idea of Barry Richardson at RT for one more year makes me puke in my mouth so who knows but getting the best guard and best TE would be solid so i cant argue…i would have gone Gaither at LT and Albert at LG and drafted a RT but oh wait…
I think our Defense is close so the one thing i dont want us to see do is draft a NT high and have to wait 2 to 3 years for them to develop. I would hope we throw a lot of money at NT Soliai if the Phins let go and then our Defense is gong to be a top 5 unit.

by onthereg on Dec 29, 2011 9:24 AM CST reply actions

thanks

The new regime in Miami might not be a 3-4 group, which would be good for us. If Fisher ends up in St. Louis we don’t have to worry about them changing defenses. more talent for us on the defense

by Steve_Chiefs on Dec 29, 2011 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

What I was thinking...on Miami

I think Sparano could end up on this staff as he is a big Parcalls guy.

I am hoping against a big flashy offensive hire and would be ok with a more ball control coordinator IF we keep Romeo and this defense. I would mimic the steelers and build a great defense year in and year out and hope for our Big Big eventually.

i like your draft

I do believe Orton and will be fine with weapons and a rebuilt oline buying time to develop the qb of the future. I think that the draft is solid it hits on gooda needs and in free agency we can address rb, de and safety which makes it easier also trading Cassel and dorsey can net extra picks too. Addressing anything of the shortcoming at ol,ilb,s,de and, te in the draft and filling in the gaps in free agency and resigning everyone would make a stellar team but I like the way you did it cause in free agency finding those leftover positions are there.

by rickrock58 on Dec 29, 2011 1:44 PM CST via mobile reply actions

or i would

Give the colts something like a 2 1st this year and next Cassel and dorsey and draft luck or something little less and get rg3 if they want to go that route which is fine 2 too. Indy would buy that they need help on d get Cassel to provide manning backup get 2 first rounders to help rebuild where they need everyone happy

by rickrock58 on Dec 29, 2011 1:58 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I like parts of it

Especially the DeCastro pick. When we look at our team, our offense struggles to put up points and move the ball more than our defense struggles stopping others from doing the same. And that’s WITHOUT our best overall player (although DJ may have supplanted Berry in his absence).

So we look to the offense. Provided we ignore QB, which seems less and less like an option at this point, the MAJOR problem our offense has had under Orton is finishing drives. And a big part of that is an inability to run up the middle as we get in the red zone.

DeCastro helps take care of this problem (along with Hudson replacing Weigs) adding power to our interior line.

Our skill positions on offense are set. We need some beef, and DeCastro looks to be the best available guy for the line.

Of course, the MAJOR knock on Orton is his failure to be able to improvise when a play breaks

down, which happens on third downs and goal line situations most often. We will have to see if this condition can be rectified with better blocking, something that we discussed for Cassel all along. With Orton’s arm, I expect much more jump balls to our tall wide outs.

Hey Steve, I gotta question for you

You’re all hooked up with PFF, right?

Because I took a very casual poll, and it seems most here want to see a series of in depth posts on every position group.

I was wondering if in preparation for those pieces, if I emailed you which position group I was doing you could throw me the “in depth stats” PFF has on them.

If it’s too much work I TOTALLY get it. I just figured it’d be a great supplement to the film study I do when doing posts like those.

Is there any way we could just start now, with the defensive line (starters and backups if you can do it)? I decided that’s the position group I’m going to start with…

You can see that Orton isn't nearly as mobile as Cassel

Which is unfortunate.

Better in every other category. If he wasn’t such a statue I think he’d be a much more respected QB.

Ben's pretty mobile, when he isn't banged-up.

It’s always all about being able to bully anybody big enough to run your ass down, and Big Ben has that.

Peyton Manning, though, has had clean pocket most of his career. Most defenses that tried to blitz him also left insurance safeties back, and that’s enough for Manning to find a seam or the quick hot route. It’s been frustrating for me as a Chiefs fan because when they threw the blitzes at Manning (a must), they always would let people off the line free and gave Manning plenty of man-off looks that he could easily parse pre-snap for the hot.

would of ≠ would've

I want a QB that can move when he has to

Like when things completely break down, or when an edge rusher starts coming for him.

Look at Rodgers, the best in the NFL right now. He only runs when it’s necessary, but he uses that athleticsm to create another dimension the D has to account for.

I’ll take a statue with pocket awareness any day over a runner who can’t pass well, but it’s nice to have a guy who can do both (like a Young, Favre, Elway, etc.)

I like this post a lot

REC’d

Personally, as unsexy as it is, I’d like to take a RT earlier OR get someone in free agency. I hate barry richardson, but I’m not ready to give up on him as a player (only as a current starter). The dude is big. He seems athletic. And he’s still only 25. I’m just tired of him being a hole.

Same sentiments for Lilja, I like him as depth, but we need to be at a place where he is depth if we’re ever going to ever have a franchise QB. There’s no point in putting this year’s peyton (luck) or whoever the 2014 version is behind a porous line.

I would like another TE too. I don’t know enough about who’s available to know if allen is the guy, I’m done with the days of the Bechts and OConnel types. Pope should be depth.

I think you’ve done a good job of demoting our weak spots.
