There are Still a lot Of Question's on Kyle Orton

Optimized-ortonchiefs_medium
In my earlier post about The Chiefs to do list (Here) And there were definitely a ton of comments about how Orton has not been able to score, and how he cannot be the QB of the future. Or, how his Red Zone trips have not been so great. But here is where their wrong:

Star-divide

Now, I know that If Kyle Orton would have been able to finish one of those 2 drives in scoring position for the Chiefs on Sunday, that we would be playing for the division vs. The Broncos next week. But compared to Cassel and Palko, Orton has been making first downs and getting points a heck of a lot easier for this team. Then the catch is, Kansas City doesn't need a QB that's good "compared to Cassel and Palko" They need a QB that's good compared to every single QB in the NFL. If they were to give Kyle Orton a multi-year contract, it would definitely be good in the long run.

Next year, (assuming Bowe re-signs) He will have Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle, and Dexter McCluster in the running game. That's the best combination you can think of. Charles- A quick, fast, explosive runner who can break tackles and take it to the house. Battle- A hard runner who you can put in at the goal line or in short yardage situations to give Charles a breather. McCluster- A quick explosive guy who can be a game changer and who can slip out for a big gain when he has space.

Also, Orton would Have Bowe, Baldwin, and Breaston as his 3 main receivers. If Baldwin develops as he is supposed to, which I think he will, they will have 2 deep threats, that will create huge mis-matches for Defenders. And Steve Breaston will play the same role as this year, In the Slot position. With an improved line from the Draft/Free Agency, a great combination in Running Backs, and one of the best receiving corps in the league, Kyle Orton will definitely be in a great position to take the Chiefs to the Playoffs. And he'll also have (who I left out) Tony Moeaki, a big physical Tight End who if can stay healthy, can be a big threat over the middle of the field with the rest of the Chiefs Receivers.

Now, if this doesn't convince you that Kyle Orton is the right QB for the Chiefs, I don't know what will, Because there is not one big "if" in this post here that makes anything unrealistic. With the whole team back next year, and an improved, strong defense, The Chiefs are all set to have a great 2012 season. We know that the players will Play Hard for Romeo too, and if he is also hired, they will be all set!

Orton is better than Cassel.

And since we don’t have any other options, we ought to stick with him.

The questions is: will Pioli pull that trigger?

by bossmanham on Dec 26, 2011 1:21 AM CST reply actions

If we go the Orton route

we’ll be commiting ourselves to the same formula we used with Matt Cassel. Have you noticed that the teams consistently making the playoffs, and playing in the AFC/NFC Championships and Super Bowls over the past decade, all have a QB that they drafted and developed?

Since the year 2000, the Patriots have been to 4 Super Bowls, the Steelers 3, the Giants 2, the Colts 2, and the Packers 1 (if you go back to 1997, you can add another 2 appearances to the Packers’ resume’ with their Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre, who they also drafted and developed).

Sticking to just the previous decade, and starting with the year 2000, in 11 years, there have been 12 elite QB’s (drafted and developed by their team), that have made it to the biggest stage in sports.

Ironically, its those same QB’s, with those same teams, that seem to conitnue to be making runs into the playoffs/Super Bowl picture. And that’s not counting teams like SD, BAL, ATL, NO, or even the NYJ, who all have made an investment into their QB’s and have reaped the benefits, by having continual runs at, and deep into, the playoffs.

If we want a team that is going to contend and compete at the highest level, we stand a much better chance following the mold the elite teams of today have already used, and draft ourselves a true QB of the Future. It doens’t have to be the #1 overall pick, but we need a legitimate prospect that is capable, able-bodied, and has an arm that can make all the throws.

A lot to ask for, and Orton seems like the solution as opposed to our other QB’s of this season. But there are reasons why guys like Orton and Cassel are considered back ups.

Orton is, and should be, a stop-gap.

just being a bit nitpicky

Brett Favre was Drafted by Atlanta in 91 and traded to green bay in 92. you could make the argument though, that the pats against the pack was played with Drew Bledsoe, another drafted and developed qb.

What if Stanzi is the QB you are talking about?

Orton can give Stanzi more time to develop before putting him in the game?

Stanzi could be

Its hard to measure a QB’s ability when they never get to play. Brady had the luxury of Charlie Weis as his OC/QB coach and Drew Bledsoe to learn behind. Stanzi has Jim Zorn and Matt Cassel. Orton should stay over Cassel.

I agree that I can’t say whether Ricky Stanzi can be the QB we’re looking for. But sticking with the what ifs, what if we spend time developing him and he isn’t the QB we’d hoped for? He was less talented in college than a lot of the QB’s coming out next year, what if we pass on our guy and get another decade of defunct QB’s, pulled from off another team’s bench?

RG3, its easy as ABC.

by shotty on Dec 26, 2011 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

Still

When you put everything together, Orton would be in such a great position to make it somewhere. I never saidthat we shouldn’t draft a QB , if we do he just shouldnt play right away. We don’t know what we have in nstanzi either. but if we were to draft a qb in a later round than rd. 2 or rd. 3, he might not be ready to be a backup, just how palko was. thats why weshould keep orton and stanzi, and pick up a veteran backup in free agency and let stanzi develop, and see how orton does.

by AaronMannicci on Dec 26, 2011 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with this (mostly)

I don’t think keeping Orton is a bad thing at all. Orton’s biggest short-coming isn’t his arm, its his decision making. What I don’t like about this, is the idea of giving him a big, multi-year contract (like Cassel), just to watch him struggle, like Cassel.

We already see the issues Orton has in the redzone, and that’s not unfamiliar territory. For him or for us. I like Orton over Cassel. But IMO, they both represent the same guy. Orton can throw all day long between the 20’s, but if those yards don’t translate into points, how is it any different than having Matt Cassel out there?

Orton-
78.7% career passer rating, 205 yards average per game, 80 TD’s, 57 INT’s, and 30 fumbles.

Cassel-
82.5% career passer rating, 169.6 yards average per game, 76 TD’s, 45 INT’s, and 33 fumbles.

RG3, its easy as ABC.

by shotty on Dec 26, 2011 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

the difference is that Ortons never been the guy Cassel has been the guy his entire time

Also what redzone issues. I dont consider the fact that he doesnt pad his stats with 5 yard td passes to be a an issue because Im far more worried about our team being able to get that one yard.

We have 4 rushing tds what team is worried about us running the ball inside the 10 ? they are playing pass all the way those windows are impossible to throw into with a lot of success unless you have unless you have individuals that create such distinct matchup problems like the pats TE’s or Calvin Johnson that they can just beat anyone

the only QB that should be given credit P. Manning because every other QB plays in a organizational system where they are the primary beneficiary

The Pats ,Steelers, GIants and Packers are all system teams . Its why they can survive injuries and the only team that truly puts it all on the QB is the Colts and we see there record when Manning went down .

If we want a team that wants to contend we need to build depth and continue to strengthen our organizational approach . Whenever your organizational philosophy turns into searching for one guy who you think can somehow save you well then you are doomed to fail .

Lets also put it on the table that Big Ben,Eli,and , and Brady established themselves as top Qbs because AFTER they won the SB not before and they won those first SB because of there teams respective systems .

If we won the SB with Orton he would be considered a top QB as well …..just sayin .

Those Qbs were in situation like mark Sanchez is in now the difference is that he cannot take advantage while those other Qbs were able to do that get the SB early and the reputation that goes with it and then grow as individuals themselves using the confidence that winning it so early brings you .

by Willie Beamon on Dec 26, 2011 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

Those are some good points

and I agree that Peyton is indispensable to his team. But I would argue that its not just the system that makes the QB. If that were the case, Big Ben wouldn’t have been playing on a broken ankle against the 49ers.

Situations arise that give players opportunities. Its up to those players to make the most of their chances. Guys like Brady are rare. Cassel excelled in the Pats system. And now everyone here wants him gone because he’s no good. He’s out of the system, so he can’t repeat the year he had in NE without it right? Last year he did. He lost one game more 10-6 rather than 11-5, technically not quite up to par, but he did just have an emergency appendectomy and still started that week, so I’m willing to let that one slide.

QB’s aren’t like running backs, who are a dime a dozen it seems anymore. Hard to plug and play just any guy and expect good results, just because of your system. Systems may help good players become great, but great players don’t need a Super Bowl to be great. Check Dan Marino, Drew Brees (who was awesome BEFORE the Saints super bowl), or dare I say, even Phillys Rivers, who is a terrific QB despite his struggles this season. And he’s never been (hopefully never will either). Lot more than just the system making the player. I think a player can make the system.

Nobody can fiogure pout this league, and nobody can figure out the draft prospects, to be hoinest. Put Charles back in

and I think Orton can take us where Cassel couldn’t. We have a window we need to take advantage of. If the right young QB is not there now, we cant force it.

Mark Sanchez, Joe Flacco, etc. These guys go deep in the playoffs. I’d take Orton over both and I would have before he even came here. Look at the respect he already commands in the huddle. This team with a healthy Charles and Moeaki could go far with Orton. Very far.

Give Orton a Chance

I’m new to this blog, but I’ve been a Kyle Orton fan since his Purdue days.
When Kyle played for the Bears, they had a great defense, a mediocre running game and no pass receivers. That’s why they converted Devin Hester to wide receiver.
When Kyle played for the Broncos the last few years, they had the worst defense in the NFL, and no running game at all. Every opponent knew that Kyle was going to throw the ball and yet he put up some very good passing statistics. He couldn’t always score in the red zone because the opponents were sitting on the pass and the running game sucked. As soon as Tim Tebow was drafted, his fans started booing Orton and would have booed anyone standing in the way of Tebow. It was disgraceful how they blamed Orton for the teams problems when he was about the only shining light on the team. I’m so happy that Kyle was able to escape that Tebow Circus. Suddenly, the Broncos defense has played so well that it has allowed Tebow to come back on weak teams or teams without their starting QB and main running back. That was the case when they played the Raiders and Bears. Tebow is a flash in the pan. He’s a great kid, but is not nearly the QB that Orton is.
To me, it looks like Kyle is now in position to finally help a team with good defense, good running backs and good receivers. He will do very well in KC. The only thing that kept him from being a hero last week was a dropped TD pass and two blocked field goals. Everyone would be praising him now if KC had won the game.
Write it down. Orton will lead KC to victory Sunday in Denver. Just keep Tebow from running wild, give Orton 5 seconds of pass protection, and KC wins. Orton is used to the boos in Denver and will feed on them. Go KC!

I agree bob - Orton has one of the best arms

and he’s fairly accurate. We don’t need Johnny Unitas behind center. Hell, Orton did goto the QB factory (Purdue) along with Lenny the Cool and a few others.
Give Orton a whole offseason with these weapons and this will be sick. He’s already done more in 2 weeks than Cassel has done in 3 years.

by Ren on Dec 26, 2011 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

I seem to remember a QB that bounced around the league, and won a Super Bowl that was a Purdue grad.

Above they said you can’t get a franchise QB without a first round pick. Well we did, and who is to say Orton won’t win us a SB like Lenny.

Orton will make mistakes but he is the best QB we have right now. We must develop another guy behind him if we want to be perennial winners! Upgrade our line, and add a few key guys to create depth and we are going to have a pretty tough team!

Go Chiefs!!!!

Curtis Painter played at Purdue too.

I know Len Dawson, Len Dawson is a friend of mine, Kyle Oton is no Len Dawon !

by rdlvegas85 on Dec 26, 2011 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

They are more similar than your Painter comparison.

Both Kyle and Lenny are mild-mannered, fierce competitors. Though Kyle is the more accurate passer… and consistently has more yards per season than Lenny in this passing league. Lenny also had a better run game to help setup the pass, but not many weapons at receiver. Until now Orton has been making chicken salad out of chicken shit. Next season if he is still here he has better weapons than Lenny ever had running and passing…

As you know Lenny you also know that he threw plenty of interceptions… Consistently more often than Kyle each season.

The only defining difference is that Kyle doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring on his finger… that is what makes Lenny Legendary! If Kyle gets one in KC it will be a changing of the guards!

Go Chiefs!!!!

I'm with ya boiler bob

Orton is talented. I’ve been hoping he would be a Chief long before this season.

It’s amazing people will see what they want to see though. I agree with the guys comment about how people here seem to have any clue what makes someone good or not.

Here’s a stat to chase- forget RZ. Find out these two stats (or give me access to play by play data and I’ll do it) and I’ll show you an effective QB.
1. How often Cassel/Palko/Orton has got us to scoring position (35 yd line).
2. The average starting field position of each time we’ve gotten to scoring position.

Basically who is going to put the team in position to score. I’m guessing Orton triples Cassel and who knows about Palko.

Orton's Gonna Help the Chiefs!

San Diego didn’t want Drew Brees and now they’re stuck with Philip Rivers who’s a very good QB, but he’s a jerk. And, he’s not as good as Brees. Brees wasn’t drafted and developed by the Saints. But look at him now.
I never liked Curtis Painter cause he throws too many picks. Orton threw the 4th most passes in Purdue history and owns the lowest pick to pass ratio in Purdue history. Take that Lenny Dawson fan.
Orton didn’t have 9 offensive college teammates get drafted into the NFL like Tebow did. Tebow was surrounded by All Americans. Probably 3 Purdue offensive players got drafted.
But, Orton played at Purdue right after Brees and in the same high power passing offense. He’s gotta be thrilled to be out of the Tebow Circus and should like KC a lot. I think Orton is in a great spot to succeed. Go KC!

by AaronMannicci on Dec 26, 2011 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

I may be one of the few that believe in Orton

I think Orton is a good passer and underrated. There is talk about his body language and turnovers and all that but I don’t think that matters as much as many say.

We are not going to get one of the top QB’s in the draft, RG3 and Luck will both be gone. I haven’t heard about Jones but Barkley is going back and Tannehill and any others would be a reach in the first. There are a couple I would take 2-5 though.

Look at Ortons stats. He started 15 games in his rookie year, 2005. Only year he had more turnovers than touchdowns. He had a good running game, Thomas Jones had 1300 yards but had a terrible receiver corp, one reciver Mushin Muhammad had 750 yards, Justin Gage had the next most with 346. Their top two receivers barely had 1100 yards. Mark Bradley and Bernard Berrian both had 200-250 each. Fact is their receivers sucked. (Mushin Muhammed, Mark Bradley, Bernard Berrian, Justin Gage, Desmond Clark)

In 2008 when he again took over for a terrible Rex Grossman he again had a really good running game led by Matt Forte with 1200 yards but again had no receivers. The leading receiver had 665 yards (Devin Hester), Forte had 477, Greg Olson had 574. His receivers were Devin Hester, Greg Olson, Desmond Clark, Rashied Davis, Brandon Lloyd (300 yds). While Lloyd has turned into a good receiver and Olson was a good TE, the rest sucks and Lloyd sucked then.

In his two years starting in Chicago his receivers were terrible. None of them, as they played then, would be in the top 3 on our team over Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston. I would take Olson and Forte though. He did have a good running game though.

In 2009 his first with Denver he threw for 3800 yards and completed 62% of his passes with 21 tds and 12 ints. His receivers were Brandon Marshall (Really good), Jabar Gaffney (ok, receiver, has never topped 1000), Eddie Royal (disappointment, never over 1000). He also didn’t have a legitimate tight end (Tony Scheffler & Daniel Graham). His running game was also average to good. Moreno had his best year with 947 yards and Correll Buckhalter had another 600.

In 2010, he was better. He only played 13 games and had 3600 yards, was on pace for over 4000, completing 59% of his passes. His TD/Int ratio was better at 20/9. His receivers were B. Lloyd who had his first and only good year with 1400 yards (never had 733 before most under 500). Gaffney had his best year until this year (875 yards), Eddie Royal had his 2nd best year with 627 yards. His running game was terrible, Moreno only had 779 yards and no one else had 147 until Tebow came in and got over 200. He still had terrible tight ends with Daniel Graham and Dan Gronkowski (not the good Gronkowski).

The point I am trying to make is in KC he will have better receivers than he has ever had. He will have a really good tight end and he will have a running game that can be as good as anything he has ever had. Orton has a legitimate NFL arm. He is also much more accurate than Cassel could dream of being. He’s come in and with only a few weeks of work looked better than Cassel in any game this year. He made more clutch throws that were right on the money in his final drive last week than Cassel has at all this year. He came in with a few weeks and looked better than Carson Palmer has in a similar situation.

I don’t think Orton is going to come in and be Drew Brees but I do think he could be a stronger armed Trent Green. He has proven he can throw the ball and throw it well in this league which is more than Cassel has shown. Give him our receivers and our running game and I think he can flourish and be better than any other option we have.

With that, I do think we need at least 2 new lineman next year, it should be Albert, Hudson, Asamoah and 2 others. I think we also need another running back to go with JC. Given that I think we can have a great offense next year with Orton. Put that with our defense, a solid offensive coordinator, and I think we can have a really good year next year.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

red zone

I like what Kyle Orton brings. He’s accurate, poised in the pocket, and a strong thrower. He drives the chiefs offense down the field more than Cassel.
But let’s face it, he’s horrible when he gets the offense in the RED ZONE! The ability to punch it in the red zone for touchdowns is what seperates the good quarterbacks from the elite quarterbacks. Look at Drew Brees on MNF. When he gets into the red zone, he scores. Same with Aaron Rodgers.

This team needs to work on scoring touchdowns, reguardless of injuries to JC and TM.

by michaelaglover on Dec 27, 2011 11:01 AM CST reply actions

How do you compare Orton in our offense with HOF Qbs who have been in the same system for years

Ortons teams redzone scoring throughout the past 4 seasons

2008 Bears – 13th 56%
2009 Broncos 24th 48%
2010 Broncos 14th 55%
2011 Broncos 12th 54% before tebow took over now its 21st 50%

The redzone is about timing and precision there can be no mistakes saying that Orton should be throwing td passes like HOF Qbs Brees and Rodgers is crazy .

Oh for reference over the same years

2008
NO 3rd 61%
GB 5th 60%

2009

NO 5th 61%
GB 7th 57%

2010

GB 4th 63%
NO 19th 52%

2011

GB 4th 68%
N0 20th 42%

Its simply very hard to compare anyone but maybe 3/4 other Qbs to those situations because only 3/4 qbs have had the type of continuity that those two Qbs have had

2012

I’ve written on here many times what the Chiefs need going into next year.

, Right tackle, Right Guard, Nose Tackle, Inside Linebacker, Running Back, Tight End,

Concerning the QB situation, the Chiefs will not be in a position to draft a franchise quarterback in the first round. They draft too low. With all the needs at different positions, i don’t see them drafting a QB in the second or third round, either.
They are stuck between having to decide between Orton vs. Cassel. It’s pathetically similar to Rich Gannon vs. Elvis Grabac.
