Cassel vs Orton (and Schaub)- 2009-2011

In the spirit of another Cassel vs. Orton post here, I decided to see how the two compare in terms of QB efficiency. The way I understand it, the knock on Orton has always been that he's wildly inconsistent, he'll be great one week and awful the next. The numbers have something to say about this. I also included Matt Schaub for fun, IMO he's about what you can hope for in a good passing QB (minus the injuries).

---------------------------------------------------

QB Rating of 60 or less: No matter what you think of QB Rating as a measure, this is a bad game.

Cassel: 8 games (21% of starts)

Orton: 5 games (14% of starts)

Schaub: 3 games (7% of starts) - Notice a trend here?

---------------------------------------------------

QB Rating between 60 and 75: Below average game

Cassel: 13 games (33% of starts) - Running total 54% of starts

Orton: 6 games (17% of starts) - Running total 31%

Schaub: 5 games (12% of starts) - Running total 19%

More than half of Cassel's starts are 'below average or worse'. Schaub has a poor game in about 1 in 5 starts & Orton is sandwiched between the two.

---------------------------------------------------

QB rating between 75-90: About an average game for an NFL QB

Cassel: 4 games (10% of starts) - Running total: 64%

Orton: 6 games (17% of starts) - Running total: 48%

Schaub: 9 games (22% of starts) - Running total: 41%

Again, Orton sandwiched between the two

---------------------------------------------------

QB rating between 90-120: This is a good outing, not great but you are helping your team win

Cassel: 9 games (23% of starts) - Running total: 87%

Orton: 18 games (51% of starts) - Running total: 95%

Schaub: 17 games (41% of starts) - Running total: 82%

The telling thing here is that nearly half of Orton's starts fall into the "good, not great" category, while about a quarter of Cassel's do.

---------------------------------------------------

QB rating above 120: QB is on fire

Cassel: 5 games (13%)

Orton: 2 games (6%)

Schaub: 7 games (17%)

Cassel has certainly had some good games for us, though it should be noted that four of the games were in '10 (vs. Houston, Seattle, Jacksonville, Tennessee).

---------------------------------------------------

Conclusions? Nothing unexpected...Orton is CLEARLY a better quarterback than Matt Cassel (and I'd argue that he's done more with less). Likewise Schaub is significantly better than Orton. What I found interesting is that Orton, in spite of his reputation, is pretty consistently above average, much more so than Matty...I was surprised by this. Numbers don't tell the whole story, they don't factor in things like offensive system, strength of schedule, injuries, etc...but I don't think any of these things would move the results in Cassel's favor.

Basically, I'd have no problem rolling with Orton next season...I think the team can win the division with him. He's not the long term answer, but he's a significant upgrade in the short term (and he's the same age as Cassel)
