I loved seeing Orton throw for 299 yards yesterday. It was exciting. We actually were a passing threat. It felt good, which of course made me think about when I feel bad: watching Cassel pass.
One of my biggest beefs with Cassel is that I expect low passing yardage. So I decided to look at Cassel vs. Orton in passing yardage and I started by looking at Cassel's game by game stats, and what immediately stood out was that Cassel did not have a single game this year where he threw for 270 or more yards. Not one. It seemed like an arbitrary number, but I went with it anyway because, hey, I'm an arbitrary guy.
Cassel - # of games passing for 270+ yards
- 2011 = 0
- 2010 = 2
- 2009 = 1
Orton - # of games passing for 270+ yards
- 2011 = 3
- 2010 = 8
- 2009 = 4
That's 15 for Orton to only 3 for Cassel. Talk about lopsided. But what about bad performances. And my arbitrary definition of bad passing performance is a game in which a QB passes for fewer than 150 yards.
Cassel - # of games passing for less than150 yards
- 2011 = 3
- 2010 = 3
- 2009 = 4
Orton - # of games passing for less than 150 yards
- 2011 = 1 (not counting the Chi game where he injured his finger on one pass attempt)
- 2010 = 1
- 2009 = 0
Holy neckbeard! 10 to 2?!
In those 3 seasons, that's out of 40 games for Cassel and 35 for Orton. Ergo:
- 7.5% of the time Cassel will throw for more than 270 yards and 25% of the time he will throw for less than 150 yards
- 43% of the time Orton will throw for more than 270 yards and 6% of the time he will throw for less than 150 yards
I know that passing yards are not the only stats that matter, but these numbers are so lopsided you can't help but take notice. Orton is clearly the more dependable passer, and we should stick with him going into 2012 - if he'll have us.
I'd love to see the Chiefs get a great QB in the draft, but I want a proven veteran QB on this team, and Orton gives us a much better chance to win. I hope that Pioli trades Cassel, and that Orton is back in Red and Gold next year.
