Packers Lose, Romeo Crennel Gets First Win As KC Chiefs Head Coach

Photo

I can't believe I'm typing this. The 2011 Kansas City Chiefs have beaten the 2011 Green Bay Packers, 19-7. KC has ended the Packers 19-game winning streak.

Only one word for this game: Shocking.

Even though he didn't pass for a touchdown, the star of this game on offense was QB Kyle Orton. The former Denver Bronco was 23/31 for 299 yards. The offense was completely different with Orton at the helm. I see no reason why he should not be the starter in 2012.

Tamba Hali also had a decent game - three sacks. He was pressuring Aaron Rodgers all day long.

So much to talk about. Congrats to new head coach Romeo Crennel. You're already better than Todd Haley.

Quick reactions to the Chiefs' sixth win and the Packers' first loss?

Wait till he coaches a game from behind the eight-ball (down a touchdown or two)...then I'll join you on the bandwagon.

He did some pretty good work with this one, though…ample opportunity to screw this this up and he just let the guys play. That’s hard to do as a HC….

He just beat an undefeated team, super bowl champs, and held a team that averaged over 30 ppg to 14.

The team played hard for him, the defense obviously LOVES him, as evidenced by the gif above.

We’re not gonna find a better HC candidate right now.

Agreed completely.

This looked so much like those late ’80’s Giant games…nasty defense, lots of play-action passes, a mix of short screen, midrange slants and deep throws…And how about Pope resurrecting his career as a pass-catching TE??

Still, I need to see Orton run a come-from behind win before I’m on his train too…ALTHOUGH this win was solid enough, I do think Cassel (and his agent) should be nervous.

RAC deserves some serious consideration as HC if this team continues to play like it did.

I have never seen this team look as prepared and execute so well. This is the first complete game we’ve seen all season. I’m hoping it’s not one of those games where you play to the level of your competition. Orton deserves to finish the season. If he has games like today, extend his darn contract and send Palko out the door—keep Cassel as a backup.

Exactly.

Although I expected more “D’oh!” moments from Kyle Orton (who has never impressed me as a passer or a person…and I do live fifteen minutes from his hometown, and in Bear Country to boot). He really surprised me, played mistake free ball and put this team in position to succeed.

Kyle DeBerg, my hat’s off to you today. A couple more games like that and I’d say, give him two or three years (16 mil or so) to keep it up.

Agree.

There were several plays where Orton completed critical passes after his first option was covered and he felt some pressure. After Cassel has been pressured at least once during the game, then every play it’s either his first option or check down, regardless of the situation. First and 10, third and 14, fourth and 9…

Cassel and Orton have different skill sets. Cassel’s is being able to protect the ball and rely on others to be the playmakers, whereas Orton appears to have the ability to actually be a playmaker.

Standing on the corner in a white Godfather hat. He drives a long black gangster Cadillac. He can steal a broads mind, man, in three or four minutes. It’s not how long you talk, brother, it’s what you put in it.

And Muir turns around and dusts off a late '80's Giants offense...

He never coached on those clubs with Parcells, but that’s exactly how this looked today. Vintage Giants offense and defense.

Never thought I’d say this, but Kyle Orton really looked (and played) like a man out there. Hats off to #8, Zorn & the training staff for having him ready to ball, and Muir for giving him the tools to kick ass.

How was it in Arrowhead today H2E?

Old school, New York Giant, Erhardt-Perkins goodness.

Although the slants that Breaston straight beasted on were a little bit West-Coast looking. Still, just a bad-ass slugfest, just the kind of game that we’ll need to win in the playoffs (*IF EVERYTHING GOES OUR WAY…here’s hoping).

This was still a bad defense the Chiefs played against. 3 trips the redone, 2 first and goals and 0 TDs is unacceptable.

Props for moving the ball, boos for not punching it in for 6, even once out of those 3 tries.

Here's hoping this is the day

Cleveland fans realize they’ve now run two hall of fame coaches out of town. But seriously, on the QB front, cut Cassel and Palko, resign Orton and Matt Moore if Miami lets him come free, let them duke it out for starter next year and draft a QB too if they really don’t think Stanzi’s worth a crap. As good as he was today, Orton doesn’t have a lot left in the tank. I’m actually salivating at the idea of him developing better timing with our trio of WRs.

by Nicoloco on Dec 18, 2011 3:37 PM CST reply actions

Cassel's contract was front loaded

Offseason checklist:

1) Name RAC head coach if all goes well.
2) Give Orton a new contract if his good play continues.
3) Bye bye, Palko.
4) Draft/sign offensive linemen, RB depth, DL depth, a safety or two, and maybe another linebacker.

This team is really close to being great if it can solidify the coaching staff and upgrade key positions. Coaching today was excellent. Players brought the A game. I’m stoked for next year. Here’s to hoping Denver and Oakland lose out.

I thought one of the most telling examples of improved QB play

was in part the WR screens. The ball actually got there fast enough to allow the WR to do what he’s supposed to do. The ball didn’t just float out there allowing Ds to adjust. That of course is only one example of many.

Orton...

looked really good today. But he has done this before with both the Bears and the Broncos. I say, let him go to free agency, hopefully the Colts cut Peyton instead of paying him that crazy $26 million bonus that he is due 4 days before they are allowed to trade him.

Make a run at Peyton, if it doesn’t work out, maybe go with Orton, but Cassel isn’t horrible, and don’t forget, he is still due a ton of $ thanks to that fat contract that Pioli/Haley gave him.

Draft OLine, DLine and some interior linebackers.

Orton really surprised me. Nice work Zorn and Muir, getting him ready and calling plays to help this offense to succeed.

We still need to draft a future QB. I think that if Orton continues to play well we can release/trade Cassel, give Orton a small extension, have him start for at least one year while the rookie learns and after that see who is better.

On Orton

Not trolling. I’ve been RIGHT where you are right now. He was insane for us in the beginning looked like a world beater, I remember thinking how, “The Bears held him back and now since he was on a good team he would thrive”. His flaws take time to realize. He just is not clutch and he gives the ball away at the worst possible time. But bottom line its’s his lack of leadership that is his final downfall.

I think what happened today will have adverse effects on your team in the long run. You really needed to know what you had in Stanzi so that you might go get one of the rookie QB’s coming out this year. Now Orton might cause you to take a pass.

That may be true

but I think Orton failed in Denver mostly because McDaniels traded away his best weapons. If Tebow was a traditional QB, he’d be struggling there too. If we want Orton to succeed here, our biggest need is to re-sign Bowe and keep his weapons intact.

Orton was on pace with Brees and Brady last year to break

Marinos passing record. He helped produce last years recieving leader(B,Lloyd 1700 yrds)…Orton has gotten a bad rap…a classic case of the QB getting the blame for a TEAM that was losing….it goes both ways…Tebow is getting TOO MUCH credit for winning games…his defense plays the WHOLE game, Tebow plays the 4th quarter..but he gets all the glory

all along. I hope they resign him. I know the D struggled with getting players on the field, but didn’t the offense seem to flow better? And hitting 10 different receivers is fantastic. Drew Brees has his favorite targets, but he still spreads the ball around. Really liked what they did today. Just need to figure out that Red Zone.

If we did that, we could just run a Falcon 4-3 like San Fran did in the 80's with Big Dong Charles Haley.

Allen’s technically sound enough to fight through blocks as Hali lines up wherever…DE, LB, ILB….

Allen begat Albert and Charles, which is good, but he would be a killer on a defense with this era of Tamba Hali.

He’s no long term answer, but he can definitely get it done. Especially with the kind of wideouts we have…

I think that should help some RAC doubters too.

He proved today that he can manage the game and still call plays on defense. I think he still needs to promote someone to coordinate during the week if he gets the job but it didn’t seem like too much for him. Also need a better assistant head coach but thats a given.

Not as head coach, necessarily.

But if we don’t give him the big chair, what reason does he have to stay?

He addressed that on Tuesday.

Said he was under contract for one more year, and would be happy to stay on as DC, but it would be up to the new head coach. Of course, he wants to stay on as HC, but he clearly left open the possibility of coming back as DC.
