Rising Optimism Kyle Orton Starts Vs. Packers

There is a rising optimism surrounding Kyle Orton's ability to play this weekend against the Green Bay Packers. On Wednesday head coach Romeo Crennel indicated that the Chiefs starting quarterback would be Orton or rookie Ricky Stanzi -- not Tyler Palko.

Orton, however, is recovering from a dislocated finger, which caused him to miss last week's game against the New York Jets. But it sounds like the thumb finger is progressing nicely and, according to Crennel at his Thursday press conference (via @JoshLooney), Orton is recovering well and actually ahead of schedule.

If Crennel is saying he's looking good on Thursday then there's a pretty good chance he'll be ready to play by Sunday.

It's not officially official yet...but we're getting closer to the Kyle Orton era.

C'mon Kyle

We have a fanbase that’s been starved of anything to cheer for on offense this year. Really, anything at all.

Give us a reason to not try to find the worm at the bottom of every bottle of tequila in sight.

We got your back if you do.

And even if the defense has trouble at the start of the game

based on the DrunkAthlete.com photos he’s got, Kyle Orton does some of his best work when he’s 12 under.

Are you trying to make the argument that he's worse than Palko?

Because if not, then it doesn’t make sense to not feel better about Orton than Palko

Orton could set an NFL record this weekend. If he’s as good as the 4th game of the season, we could expect another 3 picks from orton. Kyle threw 3 picks when the Broncos palyed yhe Packers in week four.

It's also confusing when the ball gets to you so darn fast.

I think the Chiefs receivers were starting to get used to rainbow throws. Heck, that’s most of the reason why Palko only three 7 interceptions, because defenders kept jumping too darn soon expecting the ball to be coming at them at normal speeds.

but the Iowa fans on AP jumped all over my sh*t about it and said he was the next coming of _________________(insert name here). He has thus far proven he is not the quarterback somebody evidently thought he was as he could not even get into the game with a totally miserable Tyler Palko stinking up the field. Not having a backup quarterback behind Cassel was a major fu*k up. Whoever is responsible for that mess should be ashamed of themselves. That was non leadership at its worst.

I'm Sure

Haley would have played Orton too this week, given that he’s finally healthy and has been with the team more than 2 days, but let’s give all the credit to RAC on this one…LAME!

by DEEJAYDEEZ on Dec 15, 2011 3:27 PM CST reply actions

"played" Orton, perhaps

as the #2 after his starter, Tyler Palko, threw a couple picks and dug a hole. Stanzi would remain #3 or inactive.

Yes, lets give RAC some credit for having a sack and not simply thumbing his nose at Pioli.

It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.

by neiowakcfan on Dec 15, 2011 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

What makes you think

that Stanzi should have played? Is he ready? The illustrious Tom Brady only threw three…that’s 3…passes his rookie season and only completed 1 for 6 yards. So maybe the plan all along was to let him sit and watch.

by DEEJAYDEEZ on Dec 15, 2011 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't say Stanzi should have played.

If you are addressing my post…

I said Haley never indicated anything other than Tyler #1 and Orton in a back-up role. I will say that Stanzi is now more ready having taken reps with the second team and not just scout team reps, but his own admission.

Haley never put Stanzi in that position, RAC is doing it now. Perhaps RAC wants to see what he’s got before the draft in April since he wants to stay on as head coach. Evaluating talent on the roster instead of blind loyalty to certain players? Wow, not the Haley way.

It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.

by neiowakcfan on Dec 15, 2011 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

by bamachief5558 on Dec 15, 2011 10:11 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Haley would have played freaking Palko like he has been. Haley was being a stubborn ass, and was not playing the best player possible. Give it a rest Haley was playing Palko to apparently say up yours Scotty, but in turn he was saying that to all the fans also. I just don’t understand all the Haley love. I liked Haley at first but he was clearly a problem this year

I don't have a catchy, catch phrase.

by dbakerku on Dec 15, 2011 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Hopefully he can go longer than a single play.

by trchief on Dec 15, 2011 6:28 PM CST up reply actions

Haley said after Orton's injury that he was not replacing Palko, he was just brining Orton in for "packages".

So Haley’s plan would be something like Jones up the middle, Jones up the middle, check down to McCluster, punt. Bring Orton in, double reverse flea flicker to Baldwin in triple coverage. Then back to Palko. Yay.

I think this is pretty close

I’m a bit worried about an additional DT though, especially if we deal Dorsey. Also, one of these defensive depth picks HAS to be a safety.

But yeah, we clearly need a new starter (if not two) on the OL, as well as RB and TE depth.

If we rolled into next season with Cassel, Stanzi, and a truly capable veteran B/U…or even Cassel/Orton and Stanzi….I’d be fine….I think….

There was a bit on the infamous Nick Wright the other day

Something about how, out of all the QBs in the NFL who have taken more than 1000 snaps in the NFL (or thrown 1000 passes or something like that) in the past 3 years, Cassel actually was the worst out of like 22 guys in every major category.

No one has ever claimed that he’s the worst QB period, but he’s certainly towards the bottom of the list among the full-time starters

Todd Haley lost 7 of his last 15 games by 20 or more points. It was time for him to go.

by joplin chiefs fan on Dec 15, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

Dont get me wrong

I think Cassel is in the range of 18-23 when it comes to QB’s in the NFL. He can be a 12-15 with a great running game but he will NEVER win games by himself. Also Nick has a way of picking and choosing which stats he brings out about Cassel. Not that they are not true but it is usually something like “He is the worst QB in the NFL in completing passes between 25-30 yards!”

What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!

I'm very optimistic about this.

I think Orton can do really good things for this team and I’m glad RAC has the decency to put everything on front street with us, the fans. No more of this “we’ll play the guy that gives us the best chance to win BS;” instead, we the fans get a straight answer as to who is going to start at quarterback in advance. Orton may only put up 3 TD’s against the pack like he did when the mules played them and come out with a loss.. but i’d be fine with that as long as it’s evident we can score with the weapons we have.

Cabs are here!!

O...for Orton, Offense, & Optimism (which we have lacked all off)

I think we will actually enjoy watching #8 behind center. You got to pull for the dude for atleast 3-reasons:

1) With every good state his value goes up. We can sign him to atleast be a backup. Trading Cassel possibly. We could use him as trade bait if we resign him before the draft. Right?

2) We’ve never had a Neck Beard in K.C.

3) It will be the ultimate F.U. to Denver if Orton can torch the Broncos…It’ll be like having Eddie Kennison back (perhaps that is reaching)…I would love to see Kyle run it in for a T.D. in Denver and then drop down in a Tebowing pose before standing up pretending to scratch himself and take a pull of imaginary Tequila!!!

Who follows @KingNeckBeard (Fake Orton) on twitter? That dude is hilarious!
