Greetings fellow Chiefs fans and followers, this is my first post so I'll do my best to make it count. I have been a die-hard & loyal fan of the Chiefs for over 30 years, and this season has been perhaps the single toughest year to swallow in memory. Our Chiefs have a number of areas to address this off-season if we hope to see any significant improvement in 2012-13 and beyond, and I'd love to hear Chief Nation's thoughts on the changes I believe need to be made this off-season (or perhaps before).
AREA #1 - OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: BILL MUIR NEEDS TO GO. Say what you will about Bill Muir - my personal opinion is that he is a fantastic COACH, but is way over his head as an Offensive Coordinator. Yes, he won a SuperBowl as an OC with the Buc's, but we all know that the true OC on that Buc's team was good ole' Chucky. To be completely fair, Muir was facing a near impossible task from Day 1 - replacing a proven Offensive mind (Weis), who had the Chiefs offense clicking after only 1 season at the helm, with arguably 3 of the top players in the league at each of their respective positions - Jamaal @ RB, Bowe @ WR & Moeaki @ TE. That, along with a QB coming off a career year had Chiefs fans expecting grand things from our offense this season. Getting a late start in training camp because of the lockout, coupled with the "unique" way Haley decided to run camp severely hindered Muir's ability to get the Offense on track from Day 1 and only added to the uphill battle Muir was facing...Season ending injuries early in the season spelled doom for this Offense very early on, so the cards were stacked against Muir from the get go. The Offense has SPUTTERED all season under Muir, running a vanilla playbook and on most weeks looking like a severely overmatched JV squad. Pioli needs to put both Muir AND Chiefs fans out of our misery by bringing in someone new in the off-season. While I find it unlikely that Norv Turner would want to come to KC as OC after he's fired by the Bolts, he would be a stellar choice in my book...if not Norv, I think another solid choice would be Mike Sherman.
AREA #2 - HEAD COACH: I will preface this by saying that I personally would like to see us keep Haley at least one more season. I love Todd's fire and passion for the game, the team & his players. Much of what has transpired this year cannot be placed solely on Haley, namely the critical personnel losses to season ending injuries that we have endured. BUT, over the last 4-5 weeks, it seems as if Haley has lost control of the team. Yesterday's performance (or lack there of) was the just the latest example of a trend of uninspireed play that cannot be ignored. Pioli needs to seize the opportunity this off-season to bring in a proven Head Coach to turn this around. My pick would be Jeff Fisher or The Chin, Bill Cowher.
AREA #3 - DRAFT: Now this is a tough area to predict, as the Chiefs' 1st Round selection could be anywhere from #5 to #15 depending on how things play out the final 3 games. IF one of the Top 4 QB's are available to us, I believe we MUST select one of them. I say give Cassel one more year and use the season to groom the drafted QB and/or use a 2 QB rotation. I personally think that RG3 would be the IDEAL QB for us - provided Jamaal and Moeaki bounce back from their injuries, having RG3 under/behind center would give the Chiefs the ability to have a truly dynamic offense, and RG3's speed & agility would "mask" the help we need on our O-Line, giving us the ability to draft O-Line help in the later rounds or thru free agency.
Looking forward to hearing your feedback on these areas....
