The Chiefs the last three years have been on a Journey. Scott Pioli the conductor and Todd Haley the engineer had pulled out of the station with a 2-14 team. According to lore 53 men off the street could have been a better team on the field in 2008. Nonsense. We now know 53 men of the street couldn't win 2 games in the current NFL.
Ask Philadelphia :)
The Chiefs management team pulled straight out of the station into a long tunnel. The train began the long haul up the grade to where we all want to go. 0-4 in the 1st quarter, 1-3 in the second, 2-2 in the third... Things are looking good and then a dip as we start the 4th quarter 0-3. The total beat down in Denver of the Broncos is exhilerating.
The 2009 season is twice as good as 2008 but many questions remain.
The Chiefs shuffle in a new grouping of players for the 2010 season with high hopes. A 3-1 1st quarter followed by a 2-2 2nd leaves the team in 1st place and looking good. The Chiefs ride a 3-1 3rd quarter and 2-2 finish into a playoff game at Arrowhead. Who would have thought that after winning 10 games from 2007-2009? The view from the heights is astounding.
Back into the tunnel we went for 2011. The tunnel was dark after losing 3 straight and then seemed brighter as we won 4 straight. Now it is pitch black and the Chiefs have no idea how bad this journey might get before the end.
Neither do I.
I do sense steps taken in the darkness might have terrible consequences for the team. When the journey started back in 2009, we had little in the way of talent signed long term. Three years later we have a nucleas of players signed for the schemes we run and the plan that Scott and Todd laid out for us. I know it is terribly hard not to make a change when things seem darkest, but sometimes that is the best plan.
One more year and one more draft and we return those players that we lost this season so damn early. 2012 can be a great season. The AFC West is in utter turmoil, the AFC North will be tough and the NFC South is difficult add in possibly Indianapolis and Miami again. The 2012 schedule is not the 2011 schedule and we get our Stars back.
Change is not what is called for today, Stay the Course in the Blackness. Trust the Engineer and the Conductor to see us through :)
