More of a reality this year. If we’re out of range of a top QB I’d agree.

"Hater" is a term used by weak-minded people in the face of legitimate criticism.

Yep, but the draft is deep at tackle

I’m hopeful that if we can’t get the QB we want we’ll trade down a bit for an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder. A LT would be nice, but Albert has grown into the role & is above average at worse. I want an additional ILB & Safety early, along with a OG/C & OT.

New year, same story

QB or NT is all I want in the 1st round. Especially given where we’ll be picking

Standing on the corner in a white Godfather hat. He drives a long black gangster Cadillac. He can steal a broads mind, man, in three or four minutes. It’s not how long you talk, brother, it’s what you put in it.

by HIV 2 Elway on Nov 29, 2011 2:48 PM CST reply actions

yeah, I hear ya

but, I don’t see a NT ranked anywhere near where the Chiefs pick this year…

I could see NT in the 2nd, though with Ta’amu and Poe

by stagdsp on Nov 29, 2011 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

So if we miss on Lucky, Barkley, and Griffin, and there are no NT to take at that spot, LT would be the obvious choice. There’s another major hole, but even mentioning RB in the first round makes me sick.

agreed

but, I don’t see RB as a “major hole”

it’s a minor, depth-type need that’s easily filled without a high draft pick

by stagdsp on Nov 29, 2011 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

I guess that depends on your view of Jackie Battle. I still see him as a third string who can play in a pinch, not a compliment to Charles.

i agree, he's a 3rd string calibur guy

but, with McClain and McCluster along with a healthy Charles… I think they can sub in just about anyone as another RB

by stagdsp on Nov 29, 2011 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

McCluster needs to be returning kicks and punts, not running the ball. I do think McClain should get it more, though.

disagree on Dex

they still haven’t used him in a ideal role yet… but he has been productive in spurts…

he’s averaging 4.5 per carry, and has converted 30 first downs for the team this year, over 500 total yards in a limited role…

not a world-beater at this point, but not inept, either

by stagdsp on Nov 29, 2011 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

That's pretty interesting

It doesn’t feel like he’s been that productive, yet the numbers don’t lie. I think he’ll be a solid role player (Sproles-lite) for years to come. He just can’t match the expectations that were built up based on his college days & reports from the ’10 training camp.

Good comments on Dex

He averaged over 6 YPC at Ole Miss against top-notch competition. I think he is still finding his niche in the offense, just needs to work on holding on to the ball. We also need to use him more as a decoy. It seems teams are keying in on him, which has kept him from breaking off big runs. We should use their overaggression to our advantage, but we have failed to do so — I blame that on coaching.

Draft Dontari Poe.

Then we switch to a 2-5, putting Poe and Powe in the middle just because it would sound awesome.

Then we can put in Tamba, DJ, Siler, Miller, Houston at various LB slots.

Make Poe-Powe happen!

That wouldn't be bad

But I wouldn’t take him in the 1st. Maybe in the 2nd or 3rd if he’s available. Hopefully Gregg can manage another season & Powe will develop into a starter by the following year.

I see Poe rated high on many draft site, but can't find any film on him

You got any?

It's that time of year again?

The time when we get universally mocked to take an OT in the first round?

Man, it feels like it’s been since…I dunno…April since I’ve seen that.

I think this year it is warranted

We have one of the worst rushing offenses in the league and are giving up way too many sacks/pressures on our QB, which is hindering our passing game. Luckily for us, Asamoah and Hudson look to be legitimate NFL starters and I think Albert can go from average to great if we kick him inside to LG. I think Richardson is also a fine swing tackle/backup-type and Lilja can play both guard positions and gives us solid depth.

Jamaal made our O-Line look better than it was last year, which makes his season even more amazing, in hindsight. Hoping he returns to old form next year, but I just don’t see him having that same explosion after the ACL tear.

Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'

Just saying how funny it is that the entire country essentially guarantees the Chiefs will be drafting an OT. Every year.

And have for like the last 3-4 years straight. And there’s no sign of it letting up this year.

It’s tradition.

I think OT is a definite need

And I am really, really high on Johnathan Martin. This kid is the real deal and I don’t think the drop-off from Matt Kalil to him is that large. I would be ecstatic with this pick.

An O-Line of the future could possibly be: Martin – Albert – Hudson – Asamoah – Mims/draft pick. That would be solid for years to come.

I would also be willing to trade up in the 2nd or into the late 1st to nab Don’ta Hightower. DJ56 is playing at a very, very high level, but he is also 29 years old and Hightower is the perfect SILB “thumper.”

As for RBs, we need to draft another one in the mold of Jamaal Charles, i.e. another speed back that big enough to break tackles (sorry Dex). The problem with Jones and Battle is they are not good fits for our ZBS scheme. They are too slow to the hole and also don’t have good vision. Battle had one game against an undersized defense where he was relevant. That is how he should be used — in matchups against small Tampa 2 defenses. He is useless against 34 defenses and those with big, strong defensive lines. Was pushing for us to sign Tim Hightower last offseason but it didn’t happen.

We also need to draft another TE. Leonard Pope and Jake O’Connell are competent #3 guys, not #2s. The game is evolving to where having two really good TEs can really help your passing games (see: New England, New Orleans, Dallas, etc.). I guy I really like is Coby Fleener. He is a great pass catching TE, has experience in a pro style offense with an NFL passing tree, good size, too skinny right now but has the frame to add some more weight.

There, you have it, my first 2012 mock draft:

1. Johnathan Martin – LT – Stanford
2. Don’ta Hightower – ILB – Alabama (or trade into late 1st)
3. Coby Fleener – TE – Stanford (graded as a 3rd rounder by most draft sites now, but will surely go up, barring any setbacks)

Nicknames I have coined:

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'

BTW, yes...no QB

We are bad, but not Top 5 pick bad and that is where Luck, Barkley, and Griffin will fall. Landry Jones is too much of a reach, and frankly I’m not that high on him. Matt Cassel can play well given some time and a solid running game, and unless the Colts cut Peyton Manning and we are willing to pay him $20 million a year for 2-3 seasons we are stuck with Cassel for at least one more year.

No, I don’t look for Orton to be retained — we are better off getting a comp pick because his ceiling isn’t much higher than Cassel’s. Stanzi is probably at least 2-3 years away and I still think he needs to put on a little weight before we throw him out there behind that offensive line. He may be Brodie Croyle 2.0.

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'

I don't think this offense can survive another year under a terrible Cassel.

The offense will take a hit if Cassel stays aboard. We have to get a new QB next year whether it’s a short-term FA QB or a rookie QBOTF from the draft. If we keep Cassel as starter it will be another miserable year to watch under center.
