The third round draft pick, linebacker Justin Houston, is an interesting study. I've been following Houston's development this year. The reason is simple: If the Chiefs can get a pass rushing outside linebacker to go with Tamba Hali, this defense would be in the top 15 instead of the their current ranking in the bottom 15.
Houston is struggling. He has zero sacks and not many hurries. I've seen him get dominated by offensive lineman when he tries to rush the QB. However, on Monday, he had a nice tackle after shedding a Patriots blocker.
I partly blame the coaches for his slow development. Remember when he had three sacks in the pre-season? I understand Houston was going against backup offensive lineman. But still, he showed tremendous burst off the line in those games.
Houston did enough to earn a starting spot in the season opener. But the coaches decided to drop him in pass coverage. He got burned multiple times by Buffalo receivers. For the life of me I don't understand why they didn't unleash him after the QB.
Coaches continued to drop him in coverage and he kept getting burnt. The Denver Broncos don't tell linebacker Von Miller to cover guys down the field. Finally, they decided Houston should rush the passer. The only problem was that the dude's confidence was probably in the tank. I believe this is why he's not getting any sacks.
If the Chiefs coaches would've sent him after the QB after those pre-season games, when his confidence is at the pinnacle, I believe he would've had at least a couple of sacks by now.
