Clearing the Orton Air

Stay connected for news and updates

I'm seeing a lot of the same ideas pop up on AP right now surrounding the move by KC to claim QB Kyle Orton off waivers.  I'm going to save myself the trouble of repeating myself over and over again in comments and list them out here, with my thoughts, for those of you interested.

1.)  This must be a move by the Chiefs to trade Orton to Chicago or Houston.

The Trade Deadline has passed. No dice.

1 a.)  They can still trade him for a draft pick in 2012

He's an Unrestricted Free agent.  We can't trade him at all unless we either give him a new contract or...

1 b.) Franchise him and trade him for more than he's worth!  Hahahaha! Suckers.

Yes.  Let's Franchise a guy we claimed off waivers and trade him to unsuspecting GMs. The only way that is even plausible is if we win the next 6 and Orton ranks as a top 10 QB during that time.  And then (remember, this is following best case scenario) Pioli will be tasked with pulling the wool over the eyes of potential trade partners in convincing them that the last 7 overall years is the more of the exception to the rule than his previous 6 games.  Sure.  That's totally doable.

Let's just suppose for a moment that 31 other GMs in the NFL are good enough at their jobs NOT to trade for a Franchised Orton... then the Chiefs get stuck with paying him the average salary of the 5 highest paid QBs in the NFL.  That's Peyton, Brady, Brees... and I think Stafford and Bradford.  Fuck.  That.

2.)  This is obviously a clue that somehow, someway Josh McDaniels is coming to KC.

Sure.  Obviously picking up a QB that was cut from a team that McDaniels used to work for is evidence that KC is prepping for a Pioli - McDaniels reunion in KC.  Never mind that McD was a horrible head coach.  Never mind that McD played a large part in drafting Tebow, the NFL's best passing FB, and eventual Orton replacement.  Yes.  The Chiefs will bring Josh McDaniels to KC because two years ago McDaniels rolled into Denver, blew a bunch of shit up just because he could and traded Jay Cutler to CHI for some draft picks and a guy with a neck beard, who ended up doing okay (not good) under McD.  Sure.  Why not.  It makes perfect sense.

2 a.) Josh McDaniels won't be the HC... He'll be the OC... Huzzah!

You can have one or the other, but not both:

3.) Oh no... this must be the long term plan at QB from Pioli and Haley.

I don't believe this is the case.  I still think the Chiefs will draft a QB in the first round in 2012.  Kyle Orton is a stop gap.  This move by Pioli shows the fans that the Chiefs still want to have the best chance to win that they can.  Orton was the best QB available right now.  Say what you will about previous moves, but right now, considering the last 2 weeks of events, for the remainder of 2011 the Chiefs remain committed to winning.  IMO, Orton is the exact same player as Matt Cassel.  We don't get any better, or any worse with Orton instead of Cassel.  We do however, get better with Orton over Palko.

Honestly this sets up nicely for 2012, because it will enable us to have a shot at resigning Orton, trading Cassel and drafting a QB.  By keeping Orton and trading Cassel, we would move Cassel's contract so that if he was a backup, we wouldn't have a 7million dollar a year backup.  We could potentially end up with Rookie QB, Orton and Stanzi as our QBs going into 2012.  I'd be down with that, especially if RG3 is the rookie.

That's all I got for now.  I might edit in one or two more if I need to.
