Orton gives us insight

Tomorrow, Kyle Orton will give Chiefs' fans insight into the thoughts of the Chiefs' front office. Whether or not the Chiefs place a claim on Orton will tell us some of Pioli's beliefs about our team...........

If the Chiefs claim Orton, it will mean one of two things. Maybe Pioli still thinks that we have a shot at the playoffs, however long, and wants to try. If not, maybe it means that he really doesn't think Stanzi is ready to play as a rookie and should sit and develop whether the team needs him or not...........

If the Chiefs don't put in a claim, it means the opposite. Either even Pioli sees this season as lost, and doesn't want Orton to win an extra game or two and lower our draft standing, or they do think that after a couple or three weeks of backup snaps in practice, Stanzi might be ready for a test on the big stage...........

Most people believe that teams don't give up. The stakes are too high and the careers too short to blow off anything. If that's true, grabbing Orton seems a no brainer. He definitely gives the team a better chance to win, maybe not against the Steelers on Sunday but almost surely against the Bears and Jets, and against the Raiders and Broncos the last two weeks of the season. Letting the Texans or Bears get him would show that Pioli knows that 2011 is over in KC. If that's really the case, a top 5 pick likely awaits if we lose out, and he would be smart to maneuver towards it. Not only would we get a shot at the likes of Jones, Barkley, or RG3, but could trade down if Pioli doesn't want them. Plus those picks go all the way down the draft. A top five pick in the second is almost another first rounder, and so on. That is the kind of difference that often decides between a high grade and an average grade on your post draft report card, and when added to the Chiefs' returning injured reserve could be the inside track to a division title in 2012...........

On the other hand, many of us in the fan community want to see Stanzi this year. We see Cassel's injury as a boon for Ricky, giving him the experience of second team snaps for a few weeks followed by first team snaps and real game exposure down the stretch. Maybe he'll look good or even great and we can look for help in the trenches with the first couple draft picks in April. If not, at least we know what we have and can spend our impending top 10 pick on the future of the QB position. Either way, at least Stanzi gets a lot more of Zorn's attention for the purposes of both development and evaluation. If Orton becomes a Chief, that's all out the window. He either plays, or at least takes the backup job from Stanzi and gives Palko a longer leash. That decision could shape the team next year and beyond as well...........

Whether we claim him or not, and whether the decision is made in the interest of this years' record or for Stanzi's development, it will be an interesting insight that we as fans rarely get out our tight-lipped front office...
