Matt Cassel Out For Season, According To Report
Per FOX Sports' Jay Glazer on TV a few minutes ago, injured Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel is out for the rest of the 2011 season. Cassel had surgery on a broken hand last week, which he sustained against the Denver Broncos in Week 10.
This is really no surprise. From the day Cassel was injured, there was speculation about the hand injury ending his season. In fact, there were reports that the rest of the Chiefs' roster was told earlier this week that Cassel was out for the season.
The Chiefs have not officially announced this and Matt Cassel has not been placed on injured reserve, yet.
The Tyler Palko era begins tomorrow night against the New England Patriots.

Time to see what we have in Stanzi.
I don’t believe Palko is the future. Let the front office know completely that they need to get a QB in the offseason.

I suspect they're aware of that...
If they’ve been watching the same games we have been, how could they miss that fact? lol

We have, they’ll see that it doesn’t matter if Jesus is in the pocket as long as this offensive line continues to collapse and Bill Muir continues to run absolutely garbage plays.

Palko will fail this game them next sunday night we watch the Stanzi era
Stanzi will fail and we let him play out the rest of the year to verify. 2012 draft and we go OT is the first and then in the 2nd draft ILB and in the 3rd draft the old man weeden and he plays every well in preseason and becomes starter. Has pioli written all over it
Thunder Up! errr well whenever BBall comes back.......
I used to say "In Pioli I Trust" but now i say "Man Pioli is cheap!"
Go Chiefs!!!!!
I could see KC adding Weeden...but I dunno about him becoming a starter after the preseason.
IF Palko sucks it up….
-Cassel returns for the 2012 season (his final as starter?)
-Stanzi gets shot as primary backup/starter in waiting
-Rookie #3, whoever they are, beats out Palko.
IF Palko plays well…
-Cassel returns for the 2012 season (his final as starter?)
-Stanzi gets shot as primary backup/starter in waiting
-Palko sits as #3, or of Ricky isn’t ready, remains #2
As much as I hate to say it, I still see Cassel returning in ‘12, likely for a final season. He’s dirt cheap to cut this year OR next, if I remember his contract correctly. Plus, Pioli is on record saying he’d like to draft a passer every year if he could.

I'd be happy if we traded him for a 3rd... then coupled that with a 1st to get a QB worth a damn.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Maybe send him to Seattle?
He’s better than Tavaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst, and the connection with Pete Carrol is there.

I think it's more likely than people give credit to.
1. Trade Cassel to Seattle for a 3rd or 4th rd pick.
2. Sign Matt Flynn to a one year deal.
3. Draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd.
4. Open QB competition between Palko, Stanzi, Flynn, and Draft Pick.

He's up for Free Agency.
He’s not really a central cog piece for the Packers, so I doubt they try too hard to retain him.
Also, they were talking earlier today about whether or not the Cards might dumb Kevin Kolb at the end of the year to avoid paying his roster bonus.

Arizona has given up 31 sacks. That’s tied for 2nd most in the league. On top of that, they have no running game to speak of.

If he's free, then maybe. But why sign a guy with a big arm but no instincts for the position?
Not a lot different than having a guy with a so-so arm and inconsistent instincts for the position, which is where we’re at now.

Because he's competition.
If you sign a guy like Kolb, who won’t be able to demand a roster bonus, then it’s cheap competition to help your younger players.
You don’t want to start a young QB just because he’s the best option on the roster. You want to start him because he beat out everybody you put up against him. Bringing in a free agent like Flynn or Kolb is huge for someone like Stanzi or any draft pick. It helps give them confidence knowing they beat out people who were brought in for the job.

Yea, we do need another arm in here besides Coach Palko. I figure we’ll have four or five passers in here next spring, the three we have now…a rookie…and a rookie or inexpensive FA.

If he gets cut, then he will be inexpensive.
And, there won’t be any guaranteed money with him.
This is all just based on speculative banter from the pregame shows anyways. And they only brought it up because John Skelton has looked good.

Skelton is exactly the kind of QB that system (our system??) needs....
Tall, above avg-arm, great escapability, physically strong player.
In other words, he’s a poor, poor man’s Ben Roethlesberger…which is kind of how we’ve tried to use Cassel.
Matt’s athletic enough and tough enough for it, but doesn’t have the accuracy, field vision, or consistency that even Skelton has.

Looks like cassels' annual injury has finally happened, guy gets hurt just like Croyle used to
What a waste of $8 mil this season on an injury prone career back up qb, with a losing record as a Chief, who has yet to prove he can win a game on his own.
Time for the Stanzi era to begin, the only good thing about Palko starting is there’s no tape on him for NE to study. Maybe the element of surprise will be to much for them to handle. Shock the nfl world with a road win in foxborough.

Even with the Element of Surprise on our side...
The same Ol’ Weakassed Play calling will doom us well beyond New England…Not Hatin’…Jut Statin’…
If we're really stuck with Muir as a playcaller, he needs to study a few other run-based offenses and see how they do "passing."
PITT, BUF, even DET (with Best) would be good case studies. Those clubs, when their backs are healthy, know how to pass and run the football.
Make him sit there, every day in January, and break down their playcalls, personnel, down and distance, what defense they’re facing, and the result. Then compare it to our own personnel and the 2012 schedule…
If Muir isn’t willing to grow as a playcaller, he needs to get back to the sidelines.
NOTE…I still feel like Muir handles more of our playcalling than we think. This offense just doesn’t look anything like Haley’s AZ system. In fact, it barely resembles our own hurry-up schemes. It’s like Muir calls 6 plays, then Haley gets pissed and overrules him for two, then gives two back, then calls one….Ugh.

Oh, I agree...they aren't the running offense they used to be. But hey, neither are we.
My comment has little to do with the “offense” per se, and more with Muir studying for ideas for calls, what calls to make in certain downs/distances, offensive pacing, etc. THAT’S where we’re lacking right now.

the only thing i say is well are season was half over after the Mia game
3/4 over after denver now it just over with Palko . I can’t do this to myself so i will not watch anymore games this season when it comes to the chiefs . The anger is starting to make my head hurt . And i went to a few games this year I think i will say away if the draft goes as bad as it did this year and they don’t draft need and best player on the board. At the start of the season i said we didn’t draft a pass rusher i was told by some that we have houston and some remind me again why we are now looking at LB as pass rusher and not the DE . Next this 3-4 has got to go it not for us we did not draft the players for this D . Next beef up the O line and draft a dam OT how many more years do we have to say this or how many QB do we have to get killed . up grade the Back up saftey spot with berry out man this has been hell but they new that commin ginto the season, time for TJ to go and a up grade in backup RB UP grade in back up TE . And we paid nothing out in free agents and we have plenty of cash under the cap rule and next year they have to spend and big time to get what we need i vote a linemen and OC . And if they chose not to do right by the fans the fans to to step up and say no more . carl would still be here if we did not say hey we are not buying the tickets anymore untill there is a change and we have to do the same again
If the draft goes as bad as it did this year?
First of all, you’re giving this draft class absolutely no time to pan out before judging them. Besides, they drafted a receiver they needed, a center they needed, and I’m sorry you have no concept of the 3-4 defense, but also the pass rusher on the other side they needed. A 3-4 DE does not work like a pass rusher. You can disagree having a 3-4 all you want, but that is what we have and it’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be.

There is a bunch of BS on here about what a true fan is and what a true fan isn't
Let me set the record straight:
A true fan can be someone who screams at the TV saying get rid of that bum; or a true fan can be the guy that sees whatever potential a mediocre player at best can possess.
But when it’s all said and done, a true fan is the guy that walks into a bar every Sunday, turns on his TV every Sunday, or shows up at Arrowhead every Sunday, no matter the record, no matter the coaches, no matter the players. A true fan watches, endures, suffers. And the reward for the true fan is personal only. He was there when the team was 2-14, setting records for futility, sucking it up in his bar, in his living room, or on the field in front of his $200 seats. A true fan’s reward is seeing the success that comes with enduring so much failure.
This site is for true fans, rose colored glasses and “haters” alike. But true fans watch the games, come hell or high water, and bleed red no matter what. H2E, Aiken, and everyone in between is a true fan. Because they all care about this team damn near as much as their own families.

Or Cassel grew as far as he is ever going to
The play calling had been atrocious, but lets not forget how many times Cassel chooses to checkdown instead of going down field. How often Cassel misses wide open receivers. How little confidence Cassel has in the pocket to let plays develop. I won’t defend the play calling, but no one had held Cassel back besides Cassel himself

Or check down incorrectly--not seeing open options.
His field vision is probably the one unfixable attribute…some folks see things developing, and some folks just see things. I think Cassel’s the latter. It’s probably what cost him a starting gig at USC, because his physical skill set is just as good/better than anyone else’s at the position.

I am no fan of weeden's
And how many year’s are you getting out of a 29 yr old rookie. I personally think we need someone on the opposite side of Hali, but if we had to pick one I’d go with Barkley.
Now stop with that common sense. Look at you ;)

Who ARE the decent rushers in this years' draft, anyway? Any idea Steve?

So completely do away with Houston and try again?
Dude is a rookie. Let’s keep going after positions we haven’t addressed. But I’d say go quarterback first.

Someone who knows Stanzi, or knows the system, or who is smart
..please tell me IF/WHY Stanzi will or will not be the QB of the Future. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he NFL worthy? Just a college stud?
I really like Iowa, and never followed them until last year, so i don’t know much about Stanzi. Let the converstation begin!….
Well Coady...any fifth round quarterback is boom-or-bust.
He has some athleticism, an above-average arm, and excellent work ethic/leadership skills. Makes him sound like Cassel, right? But he’s had a lot more in-game experience than Cassel.
…his arm isn’t lights-out, though, and he tends to lock onto his initial read. And he’s a gambler—for better and worse. He’ll have a 4-21 for 19 yard first half, then throw two scores and lead the offense on a game-winning drive in the last six minutes.
Bottom line: He’s got more talent than most fifth rounders, but he slid that far in the draft for a reason. Most folks scream for Stanzi on here because with a QB that young, it’s all new—so by rookie luck he’ll win us a few, and lose us a few. Their line of thinking is “anyone can outplay Cassel.”
The way our line, and especially our backs and TE’s have looked in pass pro the last two weeks, I am not sure of that though.

Not really.
We’ve only had 2 gameday QB’s the whole season. We’ll need to pick one up if Stanzi or Palko go down.

I was wondering if they do IR him
unless we have an injury at QB at least Cassel can stay in the locker room and sidelines

Stanzi could be the answer ..
He started 3 yrs. for Iowa. In 2010, his senoir year, he went 221 of 345 passing with 6 INT and 25 TD’s. He averaged 231.1 yrds. per game passing. He stands 6’4" weighs 230# with above average mobility abd deceptive speed. He had a 26 – 9 record in his 3 yrs. and if you remember, beat Blaine Gabbert and Univ. of Mo. in last years bowl game. In fact, Iowa went to 3 straight bowl games while he was the starting QB and won all of them! So he’s not a dog by any means. He’s got excellent arm strength, makes good decisions and played in a pro style offense. My one and only concern is his accurracy. He could be a Matt Cassel Jr. When he get’s jacked up he has a tendency to overthrow his receivers. It’s not a constant problem but it does make me nervous.
Crap
- Miami Dolphins: Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor
I like to take chances in my mocks, and I’ve barely seen Robert Griffin this high anywhere. But as it stands right now, he should be ahead of Matt Barkley and Landry Jones. He’s had an amazing year, and Cam Newton’s instant success may have some teams thinking that they can duplicate that with the Baylor product.
Also, I think Griffin will be the player that owner Stephen Ross will covet. All Ross wants to do is bring people to his stadium and hang out with celebrities, so a flashy player like Griffin might just be what he’s looking for.
And, by the way, there’s no question that this pick will be spent on a franchise signal-caller. New regimes mean new quarterbacks, so assuming Tony Sparano is fired sometime soon, the Dolphins will be looking for one. If they can get their hands on Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, Landry Jones or Griffin, they absolutely have to pull the trigger. No question about it.
well it is #2
12. Kansas City Chiefs: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
Right tackle Barry Richardson is a sieve in pass protection, so if Jared Gaither can’t recover from his back injury, Kansas City will be looking for an upgrade at the position. Riley Reiff is the top player available.

I hope to hell RG3's stock keeps rising.
Matt Barkley is the best QB in this draft. The more I watch, the more I firmly think this. If Barkley by some miracle falls out of the top 7-8, we’re on him like white on rice.
You can't spell Power without Powe.
I highly doubt he falls. Walter Football mocks him to Washington, and to me that sounds about right.
Picks 4-6….

Live in Chicago over 10 years. Always a Chiefs to the death. Consider them my “NFC” team. And no matter what that front 7 is fuckin sick. Would kill for their backups!

Era?
Please don’t call it an era. More like a blink.
This is just as well
It makes it easier for us to draft our new Starting Quarterback in the First Round in this years Draft…
Cassel
He is our franchise QB jackwagons. He had his starting running back which would open up more looks for us if he was playing in Jamaal Charles then his favorite target in Moeaki falls as well and he doesn’t get to utilize his first round toy till half way in the season. You go against the odds he has this season and see if u come up shitless. He has managed himself more then well enough with the bullshit situation he has been put in and a horrendous coaching staff and down right awful playcalling. These arent excuses they are reality. Did he have these problems with Weis at the playcalling roll?? No and he also had charles and Moeaki. Keep doubting him tho because wen this offense sets off next season behind him and an upgraded playcaller then I’ll laugh or if we draft a QB in the 1st round and gets traded to an organization and fanbase that actually rallies around him and believes in him with or without bullshit adversity then I’ll be more then happy for him. He deserves better then this bullshit we give him with the heart and potential he has behind a staff and weapons of caliber. Smh….. I literally want to puke at times getting on here and reading these comments, somedays it bares me to see this all but I usually keep my mouth shut but I finally had it today. Who in the good name would Cheer when the leader of the team goes down???? Rewind to San Diego last year when he was out not to many of the mouths were open then. Its a win win situation for Cassel tho now cuz either u ppl eat ur words and find out how valuable our franchise QB is to this team and the trash Stanzi and Palko are and Cassel shines in the helm next season and shuts up critics or one of the backs shine or we draft a QB in the 1st round and cassel gets traded to a team and fanbase that rallies around him and leads them to higher levels then u guys ever expected out of him and ur left with the sour taste of how u doubted him. Goodnight Chief Nation….smh

He probably will never take a snap in Kansas City again (and maybe anywhere)
Keep your Cassel jersey on. I’m sure he appreciates it.
if cassel was consistently productive, or at least not causing the team harm, one could make some sort of claim as such
but this is not the case. he has been terrible. there are no excuses for as bad as he has been. period.
its funny, because to me it comes down to something as simple as that video of cassel. he failed to put on his hat, most would laugh this off, what I saw was the same, shaky handed QB who handed weddle the first charger game. some wilt under serious pressure, others thrive in it(see tebow, tim)….much like tebow, cassel lacks the rest of the body of work to justify keeping a guy who cant bring us back unless its vs the colts, a guy who put up 1 td in 2 weeks at home against denver and miami. And unlike tebow, cassel is getting a lot older, hes past the point of using his inexperience as an excuse, the lack of OL success is partly on him ,he really does a terrible job at picking up the blitz, how much thats on him or weigs I dont know, but I know that at least half of the drops our wr’s have had this year have been poor throws by cassel, and even worse is the amount of times he hits a 10-15 yarder that should be 50

Is Cassel the best QB in the NFL....nope.
Is Cassel the WORST QB in the NFL….far, FAR from it.
Is Cassel the cause of the up and down year so far….HELL NO.
Cassel is what he is, a good QB that will keep this team going until one we DRAFT can be brought up to speed to take over (See Ricky Stanzi). This team had SO many holes when Cassel came to town and has played well for us. Regardless of what happens from this point on I am, and will always be, a Matt Cassel fan.
Get well soon Matt.
Go Matt Cassel.
GO CHIEFS!!!
hes really not a "good" qb though. hes an average QB with a lot of heart
no one is claiming stanzi is coming in and lighting it up
but some might claim he will match cassel’s 1 td in the past 2 weeks…..and provide some sort of hope for the future.
if this team wants to win big games, it cant have mediocrity at the helm. it may not be stanzi, but if you dont see at least a few snaps from the kid you may see a young qb come april and he will never see his shot
id hate to not play stanzi so that palko gets reps.

In 3 season he was 25-22, made a trip to the pro-bowl and playoffs. One of those three was after taking over a 2-14 team.
If that is not good, please tell me what IS GOOD? would he go 30-17, 35-12, or 40-7 to be ‘good’, keep in mind he took over a 2-14 team in his 2nd season.
Good isn't about numbers necessarily, it's about being effective.
Cassel’s misreads and inaccurate throws are drive (and confidence) killers. Part of the reason we get our tails handed to us when we lose is the high amount of three-and-outs our offense puts out there. It wears out the defense by the end of the first half. And a large number of those three and outs…I’d pin about 40% or more….are directly on errors, misreads, or panicky moves by our quarterback.
Watch Ben Roethlisberger sometime for a textbook example of what a QB with a mediocre line and some scrambling ability ought to go….keep scanning downfield…sidestep his rush…and be attentive to the play clock and down/distance. He doesn’t kill drives, he keeps them alive.
I sat there the night after the Dolphin game—which I watched AT Arrowhead (first game my wife has ever seen at Arrowhead too)—in the ER of my local hospital, taking note of the Steelers and Ravens quarterbacks. Let me tell you, we have more Wacco Flacco than Big Ben in our #7. And that is NOT a compliment. Watching Ben move Pitt downfield, and remembering how Cassel couldn’t move us…it was astounding.

We are talking a 'good' QB, not 'excellent', not 'great', not 'all-time great', not "The Greatest of all Time"......we are talking about 'good'.
Good is well below any QB who has won a Super Bowls. (all-time great)
Good is well below any QB who started in a Super Bowl. (great)
Good is below any QB who won a Playoff game. (excellent)
Big Ben better than ‘good’ QB, he is better than ‘excellent’ QB, skip over ‘great’ QB… he is an ‘all-time great’ QB (Won 2 out of 3, count them 3 Super Bowl appearances). I hope you can see why I can’t take your comparison from Big Ben to Cassel seriously.
Good IS going to the playoffs.
Good IS winning more games then you lose.
Matt Cassel is a ‘Good’ QB. (With maybe an upgrade to just a hair better ranking of….‘Damn Good’, considering what he has had to work with his first 2.5 seasons).
Sorry Divine, I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree here.
I’ve wanted to feel that way, and did feel that way for a time. But he consistently makes the same mistakes, over and over, unforced and evidently unable to fix it.
The word I’d use for Cassel is “decent,” or “serviceable.” We’ve had a few too many of those here if you ask me.
And if Hades freezes upon Cassel’s return in 2012, and he shows improved field vision? Makes correct reads? Gets the ball into the hands of his playmakers instead of over their heads or behind their bodies? I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong, because I am just a fan, not an expert, lol.
Appreciated the discussion :)

So you can be an ostrich and keep your head in the sand, or you can realize we’ve suffered a dramatic injury here and we can’t just fall down and let everybody kick us in the face."

Stanzi will play tonight.....
….Palko is gonna get his head drilled in the ground so many times, that he won’t finish the game…
I want to say that I feel bad or something
But I just dont. This injury is one of the best feelings that I have had as a Chief fan. I know it is wrong, but I just… find… it… fair….? Yeah fair. Casshole has put us as Chiefs fans in enough pain and agony. This to me is fair.
Thanks for the memories Matt Cassel!
I say this because your time here is done. The best thing I saw out of you all year was your K-Swiss commercial, but on the actual football field you have been a complete disappointment given the receivers you have. I know Barry Richardson hates you and refuses to block anyone, but you should’ve been able to adjust. Now while you have been suckin’ it up on the field, we have to hear about this Tebow guy which makes your frustrating play even harder to watch!
Good luck in the future, and let us know if you need a reference letter.
