Poll: The projected lifespan of the Palko/Stanzi Era lovefest.

Let's be honest:  You guys are fickle.

When Brodie Croyle was our quarterback, you wanted Huard.  When Damon Huard was our quarterback, you wanted Thigpen.  When Tyler Thigpen was our quarterback, we all cheered at his antics (Remember that long bomb he caught?  Yeah, me too.), but we all realized that he wasn't the kind of quarterback we could build a franchise around.

We got Matt Cassel from the Patriots and we all thought it was a steal.  Then, he struggled and we wanted Brodie back.  Then, Cassel had an appendectomy and we actually got Brodie back and realized how dumb we were.

Cassel has been struggling again and the tide of opinion amongst the vast throngs of fans on Arrowhead Pride has slowly turned on him and, as the back-up QB is always the most popular guy on the roster, many have been crowing for the beginning of the Tyler Palko and/or Ricky Stanzi era.

After all, how could it possibly be worse, right ... ?

So, with history to guide us, I'd like to ask:  How long it will be before we are, once again, wishing Matt Cassel a speedy recovery and hoping he can come back to save us from what we've wished upon ourselves?

How long before we, the fickle fans of Arrowhead Pride, decide we want Cassel back?

Riley Reiff?

Guess that makes sense. Need someone to protect Stanzi. Barry Richardson certainly can’t do it.

I guess I kinda get the Stanzi lovefest

He kinda looks on paper like Brady did out of college with the same pedigree, plus he loves America (Don’t we all)

I don’t get the Palko lovefest. Maybe it’s just the fact he’s new and different and not Cassel, but I’m fully expecting him to do something so rediculous with the football, he’s going to leadoff espn’s year-end “C’mon man” hilight show..

I don't get the Palko lovefest, either...

but the Cassel injury forces the Chiefs hand on Stanzi, which I do love - I don’t wish Cassel harm, sorry he’s hurt, blah blah blah

but it’s time for the Chiefs to see what they’ve got, and we’ve seen what we’ve got in Cassel.

If neither Palko nor Stanzi can do any better (one TD every 120 offensive plays from scrimmage) then kick their patriotic asses to the curb, too.

I don't think there is a Palko lovefest.

I think most people look at Palko as one step closer to Stanzi, which I don’t get. I’m a Hawkeye fan and loved the pick, but he isn’t ready and I don’t really think he is the answer. I see him as a solid backup for his career, which we have deperately needed as well. People are about to see what bad QB play is all about.

by BinSC on Nov 17, 2011 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think people are necessarily in love with

Stanzi/Palko. And I don’t think everybody genuinely hates Cassel (could be wrong). I think everybody just wants the offense on this team to get better.

I don’t know if what we’ve seen this year is Cassel sucking hard, or the fact that our offense is poorly coordinated and the play calling is questionable at best. But everybody is tired of what they’ve seen.

Hard to diagnose the situation without moving some parts around so here we go………

My thoughts exactly

Even in our wins this year, offense has looked anemic.

Cassel, much as I’ve defended him in the past, was much of the problem in the last two games. Holding the ball too long (it’s been the knock on him since before he came to KC) and not getting to 2nd & 3rd reads.

Not in love with Stanzi or Palko yet, but want to see if changing something helps. Palko at QB forces a game-planning change. Change may help. I just don’t know yet…

by Chief_Elmo on Nov 17, 2011 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

thigpen

He was a sweet qb he had just as good as stats as cassel and ontop of that thigpen had a horrible team to pay with, cassel at the patriots where coming of a 16_0 season with number one ranked offense and top 5 defense any qb would have looked good with the new England team then.

That'll do pig.

This argument needs to be settled on the field

There is not hate for Cassel. It is frustration. When you have a player with all the necessary skills to play the game and you have invested a lot of time with them, it becomes frustrating when you see them regress. The last San Diego game was Cassel’s finest hour. He looked good in that game, not perfect, but good. Then the last two games Cassel regresses. No one knows which QB will show-up and when this starts happening to any player, at any level, the coaches and fans are ready to move-on.

A team and fans need to have confidence in the player and need to see consistent progress, or that confidence will not be gone and so will the player. Whether this is right or wrong you willl have to judge for yourselves, but it is just the way it goes.

Is that why San Diego is calling for Billy Volek?

by JacinB on Nov 16, 2011 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Different situation, different QB who is better than Matt Cassel

Except for maybe the stat lines. Too bad statistics don’t play then Cassel would be a great QB if only Arthur Anderson can fudge the numbers enough to convince us he is. But, the eye in the sky doesn’t lie and Matt just doesn’t have it consistently. He regresses instead and in San Diego it is the whole team which has regressed so it goes on the coach then.

by chief66 on Nov 16, 2011 4:12 PM CST up reply actions

San Diego has not regressed

they are simply playing to the level of their talent… name five guys on that team that any other GM lusts for, and the fat tight end with a foot injury doesn’t count.

I went to the “Bolts from the Blue” site and said as much: they are soft, Phyllis is a whiner, and he’ll ultimately cough up a game he should win, and got banned. “Troll” is a new word for “speaker of the truth.”

by neiowakcfan on Nov 16, 2011 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

There are probably over 25 players on the San Diego roster

that others would want. The safety Eric Weddle is just one example. Even horrible teams have their players picked-up by others and those same players will usually perform well with their new teams. You can’t tell me that San Diego has less than 5 NFL caliber players and expect me, or anyone else to believe that.

Completing passes at 66% for 8.7 YPA and 4700 yards

Is light years better than 58%, 6.9 YPA and 3100 yards.

Not even a close contest at all. The only thing Matty Nice has over Rivers was 7 picks to 13 for Rivers. And seeing as Rivers threw 3 more TDs than Cassel, it evens out a little… there

Rivers blew Cassel out of the water last year despite not having his best receiver.

So because his team made the playoffs, he's a better QB?

Another wrongheaded argument. Last year Sanchize went farther than Manning in the playoffs. Is he better?

It’s not a lovefest to state a fact. And the fact is that comparing Rivers to Cassel is to compare two very different players, one of whom has been far more successful than the other.

Then again, you’ve used “lovefest” 3 different times here talking about 3 different players and 3 different types of statements/attitudes, so you seem to have a rather wide defintion of the term.

Announcer phrases we should be ready to hear:

“You can’t give Brady THAT much time in the pocket…”

“Tom has all day to pick on the Chiefs injured defensive backfield..”

“Tyler Palko is showing some guts as he is once again sacked by Andre Carter, I’m impressed with his ability to scrape himself off the turf again and again.”

“If Palko was a cat he’d have used all nine lives by now” (midway through the 3rd quarter)

“If there were a stat for most uncalled holds against a defensive player Tamba Hali would be number 1” (ok maybe thats me saying that)

“How is Barry Richardson STILL in the NFL?”

"Hater" is a term used by weak-minded people in the face of legitimate criticism.

by JComp11 on Nov 16, 2011 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

I've seen enough of Cassel.

Our offensive playbook calls for a game-managing leader who, though he may not be Peyton Manning or Aaron Rogers, doesn’t turn the ball over and, when he has access a good running game and a serviceable amount of pass protection, can keep our offense on the field and make plays.

Cassel has proven that he can do that.

His ‘regression’ this year has as much to do with the lackluster play of the offensive line (how often have people complained about Lilja and Wiegs?), the lack of a running game (thanks to Two-yard Thomas and Jamaal’s injury), the lack of a tight end that can consistently block and act as a receiving threat (thanks to Tony Moeaki’s injury) and the befuddling play-calling (most likely thanks to Zorn and Haley having to wake up the Muir portion of that threesome to call in a play) as it does anything Cassel himself has done.

If anything, Cassel’s shown improvement checking down to his receivers this year (now that his options aren’t Dwayne Bowe or … well, Dwayne Bowe).

So, if I can paraphrase what you said

If Cassel has a top 5 running game, and a pro-bowl O-Line, then he can barely manage to not suck.

This is all that is required to be the Chiefs QBOTF.

2010 = The beginning of a dynasty

Nope.

What I said was: Cassel can excel in this offense if he has all of the components of this offense available to him.

He’s proven he can do it and, next year, when all of those pieces are healthy and available again, I expect him to put up another Pro Bowl calibre year (as he did in New England and as he did here last year).

There's maybe two people who want Palko over Stanzi.

And even then they usually argue that we don’t want to throw Stanzi in the toughest part of the schedule, not that Palko is necessarily better.

That said, I think everybody realizes Cassel will never be a great QB, and wants Stanzi or a first round pick to replace him. More reasonable minds (i.e. the ones who agree with me) said we should keep Cassel for now, and start Stanzi next year. But now that Cassel’s out, Stanzi should be the better option.

I also said Palko will make us miss Cassel, but I don’t think Stanzi would. SO the answer to your poll depends on when, or if, they play Stanzi.

Wanting a QB change doesn't always mean the guy we want to be the new QB is going to be the one to lead the team to the SuperBowl

but it does mean that giving an unknown commodity a chance to play and see how he performs is a much better option then sticking with the default QB that’s already been given a chance for a couple years and it’s painfully obvious that he won’t get the team to a Superbowl.

by Chiefs_KC on Nov 16, 2011 3:52 PM CST reply actions

The Chiefs need to find a Superbowl QB, in order to do that, there needs to be some movement at the QB position, it's one of the laws of physics:

An object in motion tends to stay in motion; an object at rest, tends to stay at rest. That doesn’t mean that the Chiefs need to be continuously changing their QB because you need stability at the QB position, but until they find that QB they need to get someone different behind center than Cassel. Honestly, it will help evaluate Cassel as well.

I would have always wanted Cassel over Palko

in fact, I actually think there is more things to be blamed for this season then Cassel. But if we are at the point where we have to chose Palko or Stanzi, I would go with Stanzi. Even if Cassel wasnt hurt and we were playing a dead season, why not take a shot with Stanzi.

It’s not that we are all fickle. It’s that sometimes you gotta change things to get a different outcome. Biggest thing to change is the QB. Thats all

Not yet.

He’s not ready. Throw Palko in there, lose every game for the rest of the season to improve draft status, and draft an impact offensive lineman or an impact LB. Let Cassel suck it up for a few games NEXT year, and then throw Ricky in there.

I can now say this with a straight face, and it will be accurate: Tim Tebow is a better QB than Matt Cassel.

Whether one is for, or against Cassel,

You have to like the fact that we will now see what this team does without him under center. Maybe we will soon discover serious problems everywhere that the removal of Cassel now makes glaringly obvious. Maybe we will see the team respond to new blood and find its mojo again. Either way, it will be a welcome change from the stagnant, predictable, substandard crap we’ve been force-fed for most of this season now.

I have stood by matt cassel, I like him, but I have realized its realistic to move on, doesnt change that I respect the guy, I just dont think hes going to win any big games

palko, is left handed, and I still think he has no shot.(Like leftys)

Ive always been on Team Stanzi. I was before the draft as a fan of iowa football. Stanzi can be an incredible QB, but im not expecting him to be even very good to start with. I just believe over time he has the best chance to succeed.

this isnt about just a backup QB being better than the starting QB or whatever as many fans typically believe….this is more about a QB who reminds many of brady, he was mentored by the man brady was, he works very very very hard. film film film, and hes improved, year, after year…something that tends to be an issue with superstars in college who hit their peak, Stanzi also may have peaked, or the guy will continue to improve as he did every single year in college, in every single facet of his game

Interesting

but I still say the Stanzi love-fest is over-inflated. He had a very good senior season but was inconsistent before that. I think he can develop into a pro-level QB, but don’t know if he came in as pro-ready as Dalton and some of the others who are playing well right now.I think he has a better shot than Palko at being a solid starter and would like to see him get some pro experience this season. In any event, the coaching staff and GM need to see what he has before we spend a high draft pick on a different QB.

by Chiefs4Life on Nov 19, 2011 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

Herm Edwards Robbed Damon Huard of his chance...

by putting in Trent Green to finish the season after he recovered from his head injury, basically screwed our season and probably Huards confidence.

When Huard was starting after Trent’s Head injury, there was only one qb with a better “QB RATING” than Huard …. Peyton Manning.

Palko will do fine. I think he finishes the season for us and we go 8-8

by RedDawn on Nov 18, 2011 12:27 AM CST reply actions

That would be a miracle I wouldn't want

Palko may look good like how Thiggy looked good. doesn’t mean he’s the answer. yet we’d be stuck with a mid round draft pick. Meaning we have to trade up to get one of the top tier QBs

KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round

by trentchiefsfan on Nov 18, 2011 5:44 AM CST up reply actions

great point.

as good as thiggy did look, as fun as he was….I never bought in, I feel like any palko success will be similar. some WR will make a ridiculous play and palko all of a sudden is a QB throwing for scores.

I saw more from stanzi in the preseason than I have from cassel all year outside of a couple drives in the colts game, and a few other drives here and there. and I know, its preseason, but pocket poise is quite easy to judge in the preseason, the kid looked like a vet.. watch that TD to cody slate….he made slate look like a legit weapon at TE

Pocket poise is great, when there is a pocket.

Lately, our line hasn’t been playing well at all. Would you want Stanzi to get banged up?

There is no doubting Stanzi’s potential, but Palko deserves a shot to play and has earned it with 5 years of waiting. The season is pretty much over anyway, so why risk throwing Stanzi into a line that needs to be replaced.

by RedDawn on Nov 19, 2011 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

"TEBOWING"

What we need to hope for if nothing else is that Palko/Stanzi give their teammates a spark like Tebow did. Don’t get me wrong I think Tebow is awful as a QB but that entire team has changed it’s play for him. That’s what we need here.

cassel struggled and we wanted croyle?

… i, for one…. never wanted croyle. he could fling it, but not from his hospital bed. that rendered him useless. the problem with cassel is his paycheck and the hype. we got a guy who filled in on a great team so he got good results. we paid for the patriots record. not for the man who generated that record. so cassel will always be pver priced. he took the money so he desrves the criticism. he has been what he is but he will never be worth what we paid for what he is.
you can’t hate on palko… he’s like dollar store sunglasses. if he works out… that’s fantastic. if he breaks the first time he gets sat on… well… he’s f’in dollar store sun glasses! god bless ‘im.
thigpen did what he could for what he had. yup… we could have been 10-6 last yr with thigpen handing off to charles and throwing short passes when the defenses moved up. and we could be four and five with him this year. guess what? he ain’t here. we got what we got.
with no real first team running back and no real blocking, you can’t really knock any quarterback we play unless he just throws picks straight at defenders on his own bad reads.
we run for some yards but defenses don’t fear anything we have and our defense doesn’t scare anyone enough off their game to take any pressure off our qb.
unless everyone picks it ups and plays a competitive game to give palko/stanzi/embryo a real shot… it’s all a moot point.
just, pleeeease…… don’t ever use the words croyle, lovefest, and “we” in the same article. and let’s be real… it’s really hardly been a love fest for any of these guys. seeing as we are committed to marching in the kansas city quarterback kennel we can’t avoid stepping in some dogcrap. we’re just being hopeful that’s it’s something marvelous we’re tracking into our living rooms this time, even though it appears it could be just another mess.
