Some Days Are Better Than Others
October 12, 1969 was a Sunday. The Chiefs were playing their first home game of a season that would eventually end in a Super Bowl IV victory. Mike Garrett rushed for a TD. The defense had a fumble return for a TD. Tom Flores completed his only pass of the day for a TD. Jan kicked a field goal and the Chiefs won 24-0. I was in the womb. I’m sure fetus KC_Satchmo got his first taste of Memorial Stadium hot dogs. I’d like to think the roar of the crowd was music to my still developing ears. It was a good day.
January 13, 2010 was a Wednesday. The Chiefs had just completed a 4-12 season and there didn’t seem to be much hope for the near future. The team had been bad in all phases of nearly every game. Every position group had visible holes to be filled. Our coaching staff was a patchwork mess. Going to games wasn’t much fun. It hadn’t been this bad since the early 80s. I was diagnosed with colon cancer. It was a bad day.
The days in between these two dates ran the entire range from amazing to awful. There was the day we traded for Joe Montana. I had gotten word from our sources inside the front office that this was in the works, but it didn’t seem real until it happened. It was a good day. There was the day we started Elvis Grbac over Rich Gannon in the playoffs. It was a bad day. There was the day we destroyed the Bills on Monday Night Football in our first home MNF game in years. It was a good day. There was the day Jim Harbaugh lead an over matched Colts team into Arrowhead during the playoffs and left with an undeserved victory. It was a bad day.
Like so many of you, I can related many memories in my life back to the Chiefs. Chiefs games, Chiefs seasons, Chiefs teams, Chiefs players are all relatable to my non-football memories. I can remember who the QB was when I broke up with my High School sweetheart. (It was your fault Steve Deberg) I can remember who our Defensive Coordinator was when I got my first real post-college job. (Thank you Dave Adolph) I can find a role model who was the constant through it all. (I miss you Lamar Hunt) The Chiefs have never been the most important thing in my life. They have always been more like the background image on the calendar. You don’t really notice it until you look, but it’s been there all along.
Following that bad day in January 2010, things began to look up. The diagnosis had come early enough that surgery was all I required. Everything went perfect and I was back in business. Many good days would follow. The Chiefs made the playoffs and although we still had holes to fill, the stars seemed aligned for a return to glory. Then August 2011 happened. The enemy in my abdomen had returned and was more ready for a fight than before. The prognosis was still good, but the treatment would need to be more aggressive. For the first time in my life, I was missing Chiefs home games. Now I watch the team that I love, play in the stadium that I love in front of the fans that I love on the television.
I am more separated from my team than I have ever been. And yet, I can’t help but feel more connected than ever. This team is struggling. They have good days and bad. They are both lion and lamb. I can relate. I look at the roster and I see more answers than questions. I look at the coaching staff and I still believe. I look at the front office and feel confident that the work to get it right will never stop. And I fully appreciate the concerns of all those who disagree.
On good days, I read. I read what the media says about our Chiefs. The commentary is lazy and uninspired. We’re either terrible or dangerous depending on how we played that week. They fail to realize that this imperfect team is just like all of us. They have good days and bad. I read your posts and discover that you are divided. Either everything is wrong or nothing is wrong. You’re either a real fan or you aren’t. I have to admit that I find it puzzling.
I don’t understand how anyone can look at this group of young players with their first time coach and their first time GM and not see promise for the future. I also don’t understand how anyone can look at this team and not see there are holes remaining in almost every position group and until they are filled, criticism is waranted. I don’t understand, but I respect your various islands because I know that they exist because you care. ArrowheadPride is just like the Chiefs. You have good days and bad.
I’m not about to tell you what you should think, but I will share my thoughts. I hope they stay the course. I think we should give those in charge the room to grow that we damn well demand for ourselves. I think the coaches and GM have made mistakes, but I trust them not to make the same mistake twice. I think that talking about the Chiefs should be more fun than it is. I believe that it will be soon. I look forward to the day when hateful words will be saved for those who deserve them…Raider fans. I can’t wait until we have the opportunity to have a good laugh at the expense of the clueless…Donkey fans. I relish the day we get to be dismissive of the invisible few…Charger fan(s?).
I am a Chiefs fan. Today is a good day.

As another old guy (one who saw the ‘70 SB), I know exactly what you mean. TV gives you a different perspective, doesn’t it? I’ll count this as a good day also, because Satch posted. Keep fighting.

Great read and good perspective.
I completely agree with your viewpoints on the team. More importantly, I will keep your health in my prayers. Get well.

Excellent post. Best wishes go out to you and yours
I like your position and positivity, but I have to respectfully disagree with the views concerning the coaching staff .
I agree whole heartedly about this team having more answers, in terms of players, than questions. However this coaching staff has not only committed the same mistakes twice, they continue to keep making those same mistakes on a weekly basis.
In this environment, that isn’t going to last long. Again, terrific post and excellent points. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it and be thinking of you. Rec’d.

I am happy it is a good day Satch :)
we all endure the varying degrees of bad days.
And yes the Chiefs are the music in the background to the lives we lead. BUT the people we meet along the way are the important ones.
You have always ben an obnoxious bastard but one I understand.
Good luck my Friend, my fellow Chiefs fan.
Be Safe and Well soon
Go Chiefs
SATCH!
what everyone else has already said, only more so … like you, the Chiefs are always there, always PART of me, part of life, part of who I am, and yet … a loss? hey, it happens, it’s not the end of the universe, nobody died and no wars were started, so a loss? hey, it could always be worse … I say that but few understand, truly understand how I can “accept” a loss
I accept because I have no choice: it happened, and so it goes … brings to mind the great Matt Damon line from The Adjustment Bureau (we had a saying in my neighborhhod, it’s not getting knocked down that matters, it’s what you do when you get back up that counts) … and the same is true of the Chiefs, and even more so of everyone in all walks of life, whatever happens … we have good days and bad days, but as long as we HAVE days at all, it’s a blessing
thank you, Satch, for being you

The Satch
AP has been lacking on some depth without your presence my good friend.
Just as the Movie ’ Cant Hardly Wait" When Jennifer Love- Hewitt walks into the room all stop and gasp; when you post thoughts to the cyber-paper all stop and give a good read.
Great read, great article as per usual- Ill see you in the playoffs brother!!

Wonderfully heart-felt post Satch! Thank you & rec'd
It must be a really upended year all over…been challenging in my sphere of things, too. I only wish our Chiefs had more good days than bad right now to pick us all up a bit. ;-)
Keep on keeping up the good thoughts & get better!

A bad day sitting at Arrowhead is still better than a good day sitting in a chemo chair! Hang tough!
You Play to Win the game!!!
Aliitle older than you Satch
I agree the Chief’s are one of my constants. My father and I could always find common ground watching a Chief’s game. He is losing a battle with COPD. All those memories of games watched live or on TV with him become more precious every day.
The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.
Satch--so good to see you back, and with a much needed perspective.
Rec’d for depth and honesty. Like you, I see too much good with this team to abandon all hope…although, like Shotty mentioned above, we’re doing a lot of dumb things over and over again. That problem falls on the coaching staff.
I hope the post finds you well. I owe you a nice, thoughtful email coming up…been a lot happening here at the intersection of I-35 and I-80. Take care.

Thank You Satch

Get Well
Today is a Good Day
Thanks to all for the kind words.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
Don't let the bastard win.
Thanks for your time Satchmo. I have you by a few years so you need to catch up.

I remember so many of the old days, they keep us smiling and hoping. Sometimes that is all we need . . . hope. Keep fighting Satch
I don't know you, Satch, but I feel like I just met a brother
Thanks for so eloquently saying how it feels to be a Chiefs fan.
You made a good day an even better day. Like Aiken said, don’t let the bastard win. Fight like you want your team to fight. Let us know.
Just keep on matriculatin' that ball down the field, boys.
I see in you all the requisites for being a Chiefs Fan...

I totally agree with those who posted before me, Satch.
Your post was eloquent and uplifting. I’ve been around a few years (ha) longer than you and remember January1970 as if it were yesterday. My crew listened to the game all across the Pacific and I was flying an approach to Honolulu when the Chiefs won.
Like you, I believe a day like that will soon return and we will once again reign supreme.
Keep up the good fight and kick that malady to hell and back. Get back to good health and I look forward to reading your words in the future.
Me Too. Witnessed Superbowl IV
A priceless father a son time with my dad. One of the happiest events we shared together in his lifetime. He lost interest in pro football & the Chiefs in the mid 70’s when he thought the players were getting paid too much money. He thought any hard working man having that much fun should not be making more money than the hard working man who hated his job (make any sense).
I know that you & more so your family have been a integral part of the Chiefs organization from it’s arrival in KC. Chiefs families like yours who grew up with Lamars kids and Chiefs players kids is without question the envy of a lifelong Chiefs fan such as myself.
Anyhow thanks for your story & allowing us to pray for you in fighting off those cancer demons.
Somewhere down the line Chiefs nation will rise again & be the World Champions again. Like you, I just hope it is sooner rather than later.

SATCH
I’m fairly new to Arrowhead pride but your story was truly inspirational for many reasons. I’m in the military and served two combat tours. I’ve lost a few battle buddies over there and one two weeks ago. The one thing I look foward to every week is watching the Chiefs play on AFN it takes me to my happy place for the time being. But once the games over its back to reality, win or lose I feel at home listening to our fans, watching our beloved Chiefs through the good and bad. But your post really touched me and I will keep you in my prayers and to the rest of the Chiefs fans the day will come when we ALL will celebrate a Super Bowl Championship together.
Be well, Satch.
But I don’t think it’s all hot-and-cold, here. I think there are quite a few who are pretty consistent, and just try to call it like they see it – good or bad. It’s easy to lose sight of the core constituency, when this being such a great place tends to attract folks from other places, where opinions are lightly researched and firmly held, and noise is preferred over reason. Where winning arguments is more important than just chewing the fat and trying to swirl towards the truth, with the help of your friends.
I think you can take away from your responses that the level heads do tend to prevail. A trick of MINE is to sidestep some of the FanPosts by authors who aren’t as considerate or open-minded.
