Chiefs at Colts: 5 Key Matchups

Yes I know I have been posting nonstop but ever since another website got picky, I haven't been able to write in over a year.

The Chiefs have a favorable match up against the 0-4 Colts.  What are the odds we get the Colts in the same week as we did one year ago?

Who knows but lets start.

Star-divide

  • Chiefs Offensive Line vs Dwight Freeney and Mathis- Here we go again.  Another 4-3 with 2 Defensive Ends that are one hell of a combination.  Albert managed well against Jared Allen.  He will have to do the same this week.  I am going to say Albert will do his part but can Richardson?
  • Colts Offensive Tackles vs Tamba Hali and Justin Houston- When I think of the Colts Offensive Tackles now, I think of revolving doors.  Tamba Hali is a beast and had 2 sacks and 5 hits last week.  Justin Houston should be rushing but doesn't.  If Romeo is smart, he will rush both.  I do not think that those Tackles will be able to keep Tamba Hali at bay for very long without drawing a few holding penalties.  While I do not think Tamba is going to break #58's single game record for sacks, I think he will have 4-5 and Houston have at least 1 or 2 should Romeo rush both.  I can say this: It will not be a good day to be a Colts QB come Sunday.
  • Jackie Battle vs Colts front 7- This one I am excited about as we can really see what Battle is capable of.  Jackie has only been used in short yardage situations and with Thomas Jones losing a step or five, he will be seeing more carries.  Lack of tape gives KC the advantage here but only by a slim margin.  We will see come Sunday.
  • Chiefs WR's vs Colts Secondary- You think the Chiefs have issues at Safety?  Well the Colts are shuffling Cornerbacks like Al Davis shuffles coaches.  This should be interesting with Jonathan Baldwin being in there a little bit.  With a big body like Dwayne Bowe and a vertical freak in Baldwin, it is going to be hard to cover.
  • Javier Arenas vs Colts Special Teams- Javier Arenas has been averaging 20 yards a return.  He is one block from taking it all the way and we could see this.  While Arenas is no Hester, he is almost 200 lbs.  The punter better either hit it in the end zone or out of bounds.  The kicker better pray for a touchback.  Should Dex return one or two, same thing applies except Dex has speed and is not afraid to go to the second level.

Those are my five keys, what are yours?

Very nice matchups.

Couldn’t agree more, and glad to see Jackie Battle getting some more carries. He really came through for us last week, and I hope he’s wanting to prove himself.

I like Tamba's matchup

against Tackles that may not have chemistry developed with their ‘assistance blockers’ yet.

This could lead to some serious pressure from Hali.

I am somewhat concerned that due to the QB situation in Indy, Romeo may feel the need to revert back to those exotic nickle & dime packages regularly, in an effort to try and ‘confuse’ whoever is filling Manning’s shoes….

These exotic packages just haven’t shown much promis thus far, IMO.

Here’s to hoping we line up at least 80% of the time in our 3-4, thus keeping the best players we have out there on the field.

I’m just truly hoping our D doesn’t try to “out think themselves” this game, and simply unleash our best players out of the 3-4 consistently.

Now that was a bad start.... Big finish ????

I would like the Chiefs to turn Hali and Houston loose on the QB

As far as Richardson we can always line Gaither or Pope up to assist

Would love to see Houston get some work in this game.

The more he’s out there in real action, the better the chance he has to clean up some of the tackling / over pursuit issues he’s shown.

Typical issues for a rookie, but the guy can play, and it would’ve been hard to even notice his few rookie boo-boos- if he hadn’t have penetrated his way to right front & center of the action.

Really seeing a ton of potential in this Houston guy, and as he cleans up that rookie rust, his potential can grow through the roof.

Very exciting draft pick, strong – fast – big motor. Pumped on this kid!

Now that was a bad start.... Big finish ????

I agree with you to a point, but there are some details that we don't share.

1. Offensive Gameplan vs Freeney/Mathis: You can’t give these guys time. A pair of speed rushers that know only one direction. Haley has to recognize this in his play-calling and plan accordingly. Albert and Richardson have to be ready to push these guys outside and Cassel needs to have his sense going so he knows when to step up in the pocket.

2. Tamba Hali and Wallace Gilberry vs Colts OTs: We’re going to be in a lot of 4 man fronts this week. Neither of our pass-rushers should have much of a problem, but they have to be consistent.

3. Dexter McCluster vs Colts front 7: Draw plays, Draw plays, Draw plays. Expect them all day. With speed rushers on the outside, look for big holes to open up between the tackles and guards. Asamoah, Lilja, Wiegmann, and McClain are going to need to be quick to get to the LBs and slow them down. Dex only needs a slight pause to get his hole.

4. Breaston and Bowe vs. Colts secondary: I don’t see Baldwin being much of a factor. Coming off an injured hand and having hardly any time to get on the same page as his QB will be a big handicap for a rookie WR. It took a talented veteran in Breaston almost 4 weeks to get on the same page as Cassel. Just too quick of a turnaround time for Baldwin.

5. Donald Washington and Terrance Copper (correct me if I got him wrong) vs Colts gunners: Javi is only one block away…and it’s usually the first one. He needs to get 5 yards of momentum so that he can control the opposition. It’s what all returners need, including Hester. Once they get going, that’s when their talent is allowed to take over.

No, the first move always seems to be to avoid a tackler.

Or avoid Donald Washington…

Yeah, the blocking on the return unit still lacks much to be desired

Unless for some reason the ST Coach is drawing it up to allow the first tackler or two to have hands on Javy as he catches it.
