As a Chiefs fan who grew up idolizing Lenny "the Cool" Dawson, and like another poster here, I too am fed up with our decades long history of quarterback mediocrity. It's the most important position in the game, if not in all of sports, and other than Joe Montana's magical stopover, we've had nothing but journeymen since Dawson hung them up. It's been a parade of Damon Huards, the latest of which was over-hyped and is making a ton of money which makes him all the more disappointing. No one wants a quality quarterback more than I do, and I've watched Andrew Luck and I've love to see him in Chiefs' red. But I ain't gonna suck for him.
The problem with being the worst team in the NFL is that you're the worst team in the NFL, and to be that you have to have a lot of problems. Not a few problems, but a LOT of problems and they go beyond who's on the field. The problem might be the owner, like the Bungles, Raiders or Cowshits. Or it might be the coaching staff or organization, or it might be bad draft choices and free agent signings. But to suck hard enough to get the #1 pick, it's almost certainly a tangled mess of all of these and it's hard to unravel. One player isn't going to do it.
Take the case of John Elway, who was clearly and unmistakably the best quarterback prospect to come out of the college ranks in the last forty years. Everyone knew it at the time. He had an impossible combination of gifts. Yet, it took the Denver Broncos years to build a team around him, and only at the very end of his career did they finally get it right. Sure, Elway took several inferior teams on his back into the Super Bowl, but he was a once in a generation talent. But consider the list of #1 quarterbacks who ended up either broken or just plan average, including our own classic bust Todd "Thank you Sir, may I have another" Blackledge. For every Peyton Manning there are ten Tim Couches.
If you really want to win through sucking, then bobbing your head for a year won't get it done. You have to do what the Detroit Lions did- suck hard for many years and gather enough high draft choices to put a good team together- and have the right coaching staff. If you can suck long and hard enough to pickup a Calvin Johnson, a Matthew Stafford AND a Ndamukong Suh, you might be able to build a team around them- assuming they all pan out. But even then, as the Philthy Eagles are showing us all, just having talented players ain't enough to put a Lombardi Trophy in your glass case.
As important as a quarterback is, at the end of the day football is the ultimate team sport that starts with the owners. Even a top NFL quarterback like Aaron Rogers or Drew Brees wouldn't be able to turn this team around on their own. There are just too many unaddressed problems and most of them are on the line of scrimmage (Relying so heavily on small and delicate running backs is another problem...but I digress...). Until the lines are improved we're going to continue to have problems. This teams needs more Shields, Waters, Roafs, Gonzales, and Buck Buchanans, Bobby Bells and Neil Smiths before it needs a #1 pick quarterback.
But what it really doesn't need is a culture of losing. Losing begets more losing and it's a heavy lift to get on a winning track again. Sucking is not the answer to anything unless Angelina Jolie is in the mix.
