Okay Matt, so we were all impressed by the fire in your eyes when you had your little tiff with Todd. I’m not a very good lip-reader, but it sure looked like Haley said, "Play like you have a pair of balls," which was (if you ask me) an entirely appropriate remark after you wussed out on that screen pass play. But hey, at least you didn’t throw it right to an opposing player this time, so that was real progress. And many observers seemed to think you showed real leadership with your halftime locker room speech and your much-improved play during the second half, so why am I still unimpressed? Well, I’ll tell you. Compared to your previous performance this season, the Minnesota game was a vast improvement, but compared to the rest of the quarterbacks in the NFL even that performance couldn’t pull you out of the low middle (and I think I’m being generous keeping you near the middle). Your O-line did a pretty good job of protecting you, too. I haven’t read Bewsaf’s evaluation yet, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t show some pretty solid protection. So you had time to make your reads. You even found a new target in Breaston, whose YAC made you look pretty good. I think I actually saw you lead a receiver once or twice, but you are still too often late on reads or behind on throws. And an outstanding defensive effort kept you from having to come from behind—something you have yet to prove you can do. You’ve earned a brief reprieve, but no more. Expect the boo-birds to fly again next week if you come out cold. Maybe Todd will insult you even earlier next week. You seem to be at your best when you have to prove you don’t deserve to be riding the pine behind Palmer, Leinhart or Brady. I guess you are one of those thoroughbred types who just doesn’t care about running until somebody puts that whip down in just the right place. For the sake of my beloved Chiefs, I hope your coaches and teammates cut you no slack at all for the next 12 weeks.
