Derrick Johnson Saves Five Touchdowns In A Row, Destroys Raiders
From the FanPosts. -Joel
OK, this is a fantabulous stretch of plays for Derrick Johnson. All in a row. I swear am not making this up.
At the start of the second quarter, Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson almost single-handedly stopped the Raiders.
Read on for epic, epic domination.
1. Derrick Johnson saves a touchdown. Brandon Flowers is not making that tackle.

2. On the next play, Derrick Johnson saves a touchdown. He takes out the blocker, who takes out Michael Bush, who is going to charge in for a touchdown if DJ doesn't blow this up.
3. On the next play, Derrick Johnson saves a touchdown. He completely stops Bush's momentum. I'm guessing Bush goes somewhere around 270. Stupendous.
4. On the next play, Derrick Johnson saves a touchdown. Well, sort of. He's the first guy to halt Bush's momentum if you ask me. You can see his red helmet penetrating at the line. This isn't as impressive as the other plays.
5. On the next play, Derrick Johnson saves a touchdown and the Chiefs hold on 4th and goal. We have Derrick Johnson, and he is coming for you. Hide yo wives, hide yo kids, hide yo michael bush...
And Haley scratched his beard in approval.

Oh how I love it
Age ain’t slowing down DJ. He’s just as explosive, just as fast as he was when he entered the league. He seriously has safety speed in a LB’s body. I love how quitely he’s been doing business this year.

The dude is crazy athletic.
He’s 28-soon-to-be-29
So it’s not like he’s anywhere near having to worry about age affecting production. He’s right in the prime.
We Don't Hear The Hate
Your probably not in "football shape" though.
The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
Yeah, I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that maybe Sudden doesn't spend a lot of time with and NFL training staff on NFL training equipment
And I’m a few weeks from 35.
29 was nothing.
We Don't Hear The Hate
Damn dood...
We are close to being born on the same day… I’ll be 35 in a little over 3 weeks.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Actually I just looked at the date today... LOL
Its a month to the day till my birthday.
24NOV76
Go Chiefs!!!!
I'm a Scorpio as well.
And tomorrow is my B-Day! I’m considering yesterday’s W an early birthday present. But, if MNF turns out right, I’ll take that as a late present as well.
Back on topic, DJ had an excellent game yesterday. It’s so great to see him keep improving.

My B-Day is Halloween
Last time the chiefs played on Halloween (2003) they beat the Colt 45 to 38 (think thats right, may have been 41-34 was pretty buzzed by the end). I drove from San Antonio to KC for that game (first time back to ArrowHead in like 20 years at the time). This year I am hoping for the same results vs the Chargers but unfortunantly I cannot get away to be there for it.
**Heres to 5 err 4 more years of JC!!!!**
23NOV(nope, no way the year's getting in here)
I'm dressin my voodoo doll in stripes every season...
Another Scorpio here
But sadly, I am the “Scorpio of Christmas future”. Coming up to 42, so enjoy those "35"’s, because it’s alllllllll downhill from there :)
Chiefs WILL
Got out of the army at 28 mainly because everything hurt every day.

I'll credit DJ with this weeks performance
I still don’t like DJ as our ‘primary’ MLB, but he had a balls-out game yesterday. (Can’t believe I just wrote that). Now if we can draft Vontaze Burfict to play along side him… please don’t suck for luck!
Please quit telling me Derrick Johnson is a great LB. He's a great athlete, yes. Be he CANNOT play the run to save his life. Sorry. End of story. Bad feet, and among the worst angles of pursuit out there. He's a CB trapped in a LB body.
You should
He’s been lights out the last two seasons. One of the top 10 ILBs in the league on PFF.

if you listen to the PR machine of the Chiefs, he has been.
He still blows a LOT of standard MLB plays. I’ve watched enough DJ football to see that he is not an ‘impact’ MLB. If he keeps playing like he did yesterday against the run, and actually stuffing the hole, I’m not opposed to changing my tune. He’s a phenomenal athlete, and can make some pure athlete plays, but he NEEDS a bruiser next to him to really be good, and take our LB’s to the next level. Once again, Vontaze Burfict.

No thanks
Dirty players can play for Oakland, not KC. Not a chance in hell Pioli touches Burfict (said the same thing about Baldwin)

True enough, but I think Romeo would love to have his intensity and game-IQ in there. You’ll notice, his teammates LOVE him. And some 15 Pac-10 refs were fired for ‘targeting’ him last year. He’s only viscous on the field. but when he’s on the the field, he’s an animal!

Vontaze...
I’m a PAC-12 man to the core, so watches me some PAC-12. Vontaze makes as many mistakes as plays. He doesn’t break down on tackles and tries to do the knock out hit a lot. He doesn’t wrap. Sideline to sideline speed is questionable. everything you said about DJ can be applied to Burfict, but DJ is a proven NFL LB respected by his team and peers. Vontaze is a college player who hasn’t faced a 240lb RB or a 250 QB yet. As far as Burficts character, I don’t think anyone person can disrupt our Chiefs. Our team unity seems amazing to me so far.

Eh, there's a few I'd be about as happy with as Burfict.
Te’o, Hightower, Galippo. Might be even happier with Hightower, actually, that guy’s a BIG thumper, and probably not as prone to over-enthusiasm as Burfict or DJ.

Was just about to mention the same incident
No way Pioli spends consecutive 1st rounders on guys with character issues (and Burflict makes Baldwin look like a saint).
I’m buying me some RG3 with that mid-1st next year instead. Make him compete for the job so he doesn’t get thrown in before he’s ready but once he is, shit gets real. From a defensive stance, how do you cover: RG3, Jamaal, Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, and Moeaki/McClain/Dex all on the field at once?
He’s got the speed and play-making scramble of Vick and Newton but throws >70% from the pocket with 22-2 TD-INT on the season (63-13 career). Pair him with the skill players we’ve got on the roster right now and this offense gets freaky in a hurry.

I'd rather keep churning roster @ QB, with Stanzi-type picks,
unless Cassel stops making progress. There’s so much that goes into QB evals that are actually beyond the QB’s control, I really like to set the table for ‘em. And besides, Cassel is in the midst of learning all over again how to play QB on a GOOD team, with GOOD tackle play. He’s already proven he has the grit to survive a poor situation, and I don’t feel good about throwing an elite draft pick on the field, until I see at least a LITTLE bit more from the O-Line against the better D-Lines.
The Raiders game shows that the Chiefs have DEFinitely improved in the trenches and at WR. And I think a good piece of that has filtered over to the secondary, as well. Practicing against Breaston, Colbert and Bowe HAS to make them better than practicing against Chambers, Tucker/Horne and Bowe. Baldwin gives them another tree to sharpen their claws on.
What I’d like to see is what I’d always like to see. If likely upgrade at OT is there for the taking, you take it. If a 3rd or 4th rounder gets you into the cream of the interior linemen, you take one of THOSE, too. DB is right up there, when it comes to high picks. I’d be unafraid to spend another 1st on corner. Any time you can single-up one more wideout against one more of the elite offenses, the run defense and pass rush landscapes tip dramatically in favor of the D in the playoffs.
Everybody likes shiny new LBs and HBs, but they’re like finishing touches, to me, and that’s assuming you have failed to sift through a very large talent pool for someone championship-serviceable, if you make sure he has brains, and you pour your wealth into trenches and perimeter. A DB with great range does more to free LBs than LBs with range free up your DBs, imo. The LB is GOING to break down in coverage, fairly quickly, against a fairly large range of offensive skill players (WRs, TEs, HBs). How much better is it if your LB can just BITE on ‘most every play fake, because if it turns out to be pass, he’s coming, ANYway, and planning to deck the RB on the way by, ANYway. He ain’t worried about staying home or getting into his drops a good chunk of the time, and determined pre-snap, in many cases, eliminating a lot of “read” dependence. Ears pinned back, with maybe 2 things to worry about.

I think we'll definitely spend at least 2 of our first 5 picks on offensive linemen this draft

Imo, Gilberry going up to about 285 ...
from what I heard in TC/PS has been to his detriment. I wouldn’t be opposed to shopping him around to 4-3 teams for whatever draft pick before next draft. It would be nice to pick up an extra pick, or two, for next season.
Imo, we’re staying with Matty next season and developing Stanzi to be his heir by 2013 … and I totally believe that until they “SHOW-ME” differently. The Pats totally believe they can develop latter round QB’s into the next Brady (or a reasonably close version of him.) Its just the Pats’ way, and I believe Pioli will follow suit here.
Getting the next Willie Roaf for LT would be nice. But picking (like in the 2nd rd) a very good RT prospect would good enough; B “The Human Windmill” Rich has to be upgraded. But much to my chagrin, I think Haley absolutely loves him, and will stay with him.
We’ve HAVE to get another Asamoah/Waters/Shields-like OG in this draft … HAVE to! Hudson is still awfully light in the trousers at 299, so he needs TWO bigger, stronger, more athletic OG’s flanking him; we only have one right now. I can only hope Hudson will be a good enough C at this point.
This year’s draft class is STACKED with CB’s … according to the so-called draft experts … at this point. That’s why I was kind of annoyed at picking a freaking CB in Jalil, when we desperately needed another S. Jalil has the size and physicality (according to his draft scouting reports) to be a FS/SS tweener(in my jargon.) But I still don’t know where he’ll fit in ultimately, if we keep Carr? Of course, a 4th rd pick isn’t likely to become an excellent CB, so maybe he just will ultimately provide good depth behind Flowers and Carr? Jalil will prove to be a very good back-up to Carr and Flowers, hopefully.
We desperately need another S. I can only hope Crennel will realize the LB-Size SS (like Sabby at 6-2-224, and McGraw at 6’3-208), with very limited athleticism, are going the way of the dinosaurs. There was article about that somewhere I read. We need a FS/SS tweener, if you will … I hope we get one in this draft, PLEASE! Scrubs like Piscitelli need to be deleted by at least a far superior depth Nickel FS/SS … and McGraw because of age and declining athleticism. Keeping D-Wash for a purdy good ST and EMERGENCY 4th S will probably be good enough.
Next years draft class is supposed to be a down year for DL’men. But I wouldn’t be opposed to grabbing a good 3-down DE for at least depth, if nothing else. Although, I wouldn’t be opposed to shopping around Dorsey to a 4-3 team looking for a DT neither. Scrubs like Amon Gordon need to be deleted by at least much, much better depth player. I think Bailey might still develop into a good role-player DL’man in the nickel D.
If Romeo is still totally committed to a 2-gap 3-4 as the base D, then we still really need that monster stud NT that has a higher floor and higher ceiling than a 6th rd prospect. Maybe Powe will still be given a chance to prove he can be a good back-up NT? But I’m absolutely sure Pioli/Crennel will keep Gregg another season, or 2. So I don’t see a NT pick.
I’d still like it if they grab a total stud SILB prospect, and relegate Belcher to a back-up. Siler isn’t all that good, really. He’s mostly a passing down coverage specialist/back up SILB at best, if he even makes it back from a torn achilles at all, which I kinda doubt (a torn achilles is much, much worse than even a torn ACL; again, there’s stat studies to back that up.) But I totally believe Pioli/Haley/Romeo love Belcher, so I doubt it happens.
I won’t even go into detail how sickening for me it felt to see Studebaker back out there starting again in the Colts game … okay, I really felt like throwing up! Haley and Romeo have a 24/7/365 walking boner for Stud, no matter how much more talented Houston is, and even Sheffield might be, although Sheff hasn’t proven much either. So Hot Rod the Stud is THE starting SOLB for years to come, with Houston rotating in … how disappointing. (smh, sighing)
I’d still like to see them draft another good all-around tailback (good at rushing, good at receiving, good at pass-pro) for TJ’s replacement. I’m still not sold on Battle being the next coming of Jesus H. Christ, and thus being an every down back. I still wouldn’t mind them drafting a good burner for a 4th WR too. And they need another good big blocking TE for Pope’s upgrade. That’s the way I see it in my absolutely know nuthin opinion. (shrugs)

Makes me hungry for more beef up front. Particularly that Defensive Beef.
I think that Gregg is serviceable for another year, and Powe will be waiting in the wings. I never thought I’d say this, but maybe its time for the Dorsey show to leave KC? As much as I like Dorsey, he seems to be getting outplayed by Jackson. Even one-on-one he’s just not dominating like you’d want. I have however been pleasantly surprised with Bailey, and he looks to be coming along.

Tedford QBs are great
Just look at David Carr, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, Kyle Boller, Billy Volek, and AJ Feeley
Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories.
When we drafted him, based on what we saw in college, he WAS worth a first round pick
then, early in his career, when he would shoot into the backfield for a TFL on first down, but then overpursue and give up a 18 yard scamper on second down, I don’t think he was worth a first round pick – or at least he wasn’t playing like one…
Now he is certainly living up to his draft position
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Only thing is, I don't believe in spending 1st-rounders on LBs, when you're flailing around in FA
to try to stock up your OL and DL, and let’s not forget all the whiffs at WR and CB in there.
Great LBs won’t win championships behind 2nd-rate lines or in front of 2nd-rate DBs. Great LBs are the icing on the cake, after you’ve achieved a solid starting lineup, in decent depth, imo.
OTOH, once you’ve spent the pick, it’s really nice to have that top-shelf LB, until and unless he demands TOP money, when TOP money on LB can set you back in other position groups.
But I’ll take great linemen and DBs, who can shrink the areas/distances for smart LBs, every day of the week.

Good point.
And I’m no draft expert, by any stretch. Just sharing my ’druthers.
In chess, you always want to keep your pawns together and avoid stacking them, so they’ll be mutually self-supporting in the end-game, but SOMEtimes you stack them, in order to open up a bowling alley for your rooks and queen. (Like blowing a hole in your own fortifications, because you have an attack on the opposing king, sitting outside your walls) The general principle should never be followed in defiance of the current situation.

So true PV
How many times I remember seing DJ go ass over elbows and land in a heap when he over pursued his target. It took Haley and then a good serving of RAC to get through the bone in his head but it finally happened. What you see on the field today is truly a pro bowl player. It takes more than talent to become great. DJ has the talent and now he’s working his brain to go with it.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
My theory of DJ has always been....
In college he was such a physical freak he never really never learned how to play line backer or the game in general. His coach (in my theory) would simply say “DJ see ball, now go get ball DJ”. My point, he never had to learn anything because his coach just put him out there and said do your thing. He played on pure talent in college. Got to NFL and slowly learned the position and game and then in time got a decent line and system in front of him and now look at him. One bad MFer. That’s been my theory anyway.

Ideally, your D is set up to let one or two guys freelance a fair amount of the time.
And you scheme to let them. That was how most of Derrick Thomas’s career went. Then as the team deteriorated, he eventually got tapped to play defensive end, which he did very well, but it sucked to waste that talent on a down lineman.

Haley said about as much

"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"

He’s always been a phenomenal athlete that (until NFL) was so far ahead of his competition that he never had to learn nuance. Like the wrestler with the pulled hamstring who has to rely on his skill to win vs. his strength.

He was very handicapped by subpar NT play and T-Jax being hurt/ineffective.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Glad you said this, since now I don't have to post a new com to get it said.
I don’t think DJ is all that different than he was, but now he’s behind a 2-gap line that eats up double-teams like crazy. That spear on the goal line was made possible by a NT and LDE who stoned the push by the OL.
The open-field TD-saver was where the extra step really showed up. So that was a game-changer. That said, if you’re blockin’ it up, correctly, and everybody’s doing their jobs, correctly, those kinds of game-changers from LBs aren’t as critical to long-term success.
Behind a sub-par or barely par D-Line, every minor flaw in DJ’s game was magnified. To make the D 15th or above in the league, the LBs had to perform the occasional miracle, when what you WANT is LBs that just do their freakin’ jobs. A couple weeks ago, DJ got another post like this one, and the biggest plays he made were the plays where he just stayed home and did his job.
But I’ll tell ya what. When the guys up front are doing THEIR jobs, it sure is a lot easier for the LBs to guess right, not that there’s a whole lot of guesswork on the part of the OLBs in this 3-4. Whether they blitz or drop is determined pre-snap, to a much greater degree than for the ILBs, who have to filter to the ball.

So glad you put this up
DJ is in straight beast mode and has been since he was benched in ’09. Our defense is…scary. Amazing team play.
Is that Demorio Williams in section 4
Looks like he might have gotten around the tackle and made contact on Bush’s legs on that play. Pretty darn fast and untouched on that play…
Go Chiefs!!!!
Dunno, can't tell if it's a 53 or a 59.
I love how Gregg goes up and swats the ball there. He’s the only guy strong/brave/crazy enough to stand and sort of jump in the middle of a scrum.

Guy's still a good player when he's not trying to push people's heads off.
I wonder what a 4-3 team would trade for him?

He just absorbed the blocker and then waited for the ball to come to him. It's like he's made of sponge.

But while that is Gregg's primary role, he also notched the sack, off of T-Jax busting diagonally thru the backfield.

It's good stuff.
I think I’d rather he just let his hair down and discussed the line play descriptively. Qualitative things that tend to disappear in an objective metric. I like learning about their techniques and who’s winning against whom, on a given day. The 86 or 73 or 92 or what have you, has little meaning when the context of the opponent is left out. To a GREAT extent, the variations in our guys’ KPM, week to week, is the product of strength of opposition. And it’s when the convo turns that way, that my ears really perk up, because all too often, I haven’t tracked the opposing players all that closely, and just have a shallow fan’s sense of how good other teams’ lines are.
For instance, I got shot down by Detroit fans and others when I expressed my reservations about that Detroit O-Line, and the likelihood of a healthy 16-game season for Stafford. None of my impressions really showed up in the various metrics, but they ARE struggling to generate a running game, and Stafford IS vulnerable.

Agreed, the bullets are my favorite part of his posts.
I look at the numbers as an interesting summary of a more interesting story.

After yesterday's game
He’lll have plenty left. Crap, I can think of another couple of great plays just by DJ…
Suggestion… you guys need to do the play in which Cassel missed a wide open Baldwin with nothing but grass between him and the endzone.
Cassel wasn’t terrible yesterday, but that was a terrible play. And it needs to be shown, lest people think all our QB problems are solved…
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
He'll notice Baldwin more and more. It was the first game together for these two. Speed of the game..blah, blah...but you know it's true.

Definately an adjustment.
Before yesterday, that’s Dex in the middle, who would have dissapeared behind the lines. It’ll come in time.
Well... He was being chased down by a Raider.
Can’t really blame him for not seeing the whole field in that situation.
I'll go back and replay that one. Eyes aren't that great, but it almost looked like a lineman got a finger on it.
That said, it seemed in preseason and in yesterday’s game, that Cassel expects Baldwin to be a lot further into his route than he ends up being. Wouldn’t surprise me if Baldwin is still learning how to do some bullying at the line. NFL DBs are going to get their hands on him as much as possible, if they think they can mess him up.

That was the main complaint against him in camp/preseason.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
Yes. But when I re-watch Sunday's win, I'll be looking closer at #89 at the snap.
They lined him up off the line, mostly, seemingly to mask this problem, which I was wondering if they’d try, after the camp reports.

I actually appreciate it Clay.
Most of my AP time is done at work, so when you and BJ do those compilations, I can’t view them cause they are on YouTube. While this loads a little slow, I at least can see the videos. Thanks
Awesome stuff, thanks Clay
By the way, anyone remember the last goal line stand like the one yesterday?
I remember Kelly Gregg catching someone earlier this year.
That was awesome and he damn near did it again on play 4 above.
Home opener last year against Chargers on MNF.
I was there, in the rain. And it was AWESOME. Hell of a way to start the year and end the game.
Although admittedly I am hoping for more of a blow out this time around.

On the radio broadcast Mitch indicated DJ has been fantastic so far
but lamented that unless he gets interceptions or fumble recoveries he could go unnoticed for pro bowl selection.
And Lenny pointed out DJ consistently takes the runners legs out.

It's very, very difficult for 3-4 ILBs to get Pro Bowl nods.
Most of the votes go to 4-3 MLBs and 3-3 OLBs.

That was the douche on 610 this afternoon in place of Romeclone.
Take a look at the DJ situation, the Bowe situatuion and the all around effort by these players under this coach and I can not in my right mind see Pioli getting rid of our Hobo outside of a complete (GOD FORBID) meltdown from here on out.
Where is this CRAP coming from?

Based on "reports" that Haley and Pioli aren't getting along.
I have no idea what those “reports” are based on.

Pioli tried to kill Haley this morning with a letter opener.
There’s a report.
Quick, someone go quote it on the radio, but cite me as an “anonymous source close to the organization”.

If Haley is let go at the end of this year (barring a meltdown) I will end my lifelong loyalty to the Chiefs.
I will be totally pissed if we start over at HC because Pioli didn’t get Todd the depth he needed.
Tomahawk, I am with you. I would take at least a LONG LONG break from really following the team outside of player stats
and that wouldnt be as a sacrifice, it would be out of pure disgust. I love todd haley as a head coach, I have always loved that style, the hard nosed coach who yells but actually has more to him than what meets the eye. I love his pressers, I would be absolutely devastated, as I think many chief players would be, if we lost todd haley after this season.

As it ought to be. It's his job!
Nice that the rest of the D is working so much better, permitting him to get his highlights.
And he deserves props for making plays, and I’m especially impressed when he runs people down in the open field. But staying at home and taking 5 or 10 steps to finish the play that comes to him is the way it’s supposed to work, most of the time, and the guys in front of him are letting him do that.
