Jonathan Baldwin's Hometown Goes Under The Spotlight

ESPN's Rick Reilly traveled to Pennsylvania to do a story on the football phenomenon in Aliquippa, which happens to be the hometown of Kansas City Chiefs WR Jonathan Baldwin.

Usually when a first round pick comes from a smaller town -- ESPN cites 12,000 as the population -- he's the biggest story around but that's not really the case in Aliquippa as there are more than a few very well-known NFL folks to come out of the small Pennsylvania town including Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett, Ty Law, Darrelle Revis, Sean Gilbert and Baldwin.

Population hit nearly 30,000 in 1940 but the closing of the steel mill in the 1980s caused the population to drop.

Check out the video feature on ESPN.com about Aliquippa. It's pretty interesting stuff and Baldwin is even quoted a couple of times.

This isn't even the definitive story on Aliquippa and its relationship to the NFL. Sports Illustrated had a lengthy feature on the town back in January 2011.

The ghost of Sylvester Morris

not remotely fair to sly morris. I think many would agree

I like baldwin, but dang, Sly showed some skills and actually produced before an injury. we still dont know what we have with baldwin, which is why I understand haley sitting him out. Our pass game is clicking, our special teams have looked better in the past 2 weeks than they have all season(not including this bye week in the “past 2 weeks” should have said last 2 games)…I think even one move on that ST unit could disrupt a great thing

Isn’t that a reason to put him in?

Playing better competition is what’s going to disrupt it.

"Hater" is a term used by weak-minded people in the face of legitimate criticism.

Speaking of hometown in the spotlight...

Anyone see that the KC episode of City Confidential aired on A&E this week? It tells the story of the brutal murder of local musician, Steve Harvey. A musician in the band Mass Transit.

Who recently found their hot 45? Ja Boi.

OT: Yahoo headline reads "Raider's get QB Palmer for 2 high picks"

I didn’t know Houston was part of this deal.

I think we should stop referring to JB as "WR"

… until he is Wide, and recieving a pass. As of now, he should be refered to as “UW” – Un-used Weapon.

Ha,ha, Ty Law!

My godson is 6 1/2 and plays flag football here in Rhode Island, and Ty Law’s son plays for another team, in the neighboring town and was at the game two weekends ago.

They have a brand new artificial turf field and track at the high school where they play and they have a rule that you can’t bring drinks onto the field. You could hear one of the coaches saying to the other “no way, I ain’t going to be the one to tell Ty Law he can’t bring his coffee onto the field” haha

What's Ty Law gonna do to him? Buy his house and throw him out?

Well no wonder I can't find his jersey online...

He hasn’t been fitted for a game jersey yet… Guess I’ll rock the DT jersey this weekend…

I had a dorm mate my freshman year - a CB from Aliquippa.

From the waist down, he was a track guy. From the waist up he was a body builder. Guy with a real chip on his shoulder, but good-hearted all the same. Back when an earring in the RIGHT ear meant you were gay, guys he ran with back home wore an earring in their right ear. Just so they could kick the shit out of anybody making a smart-ass remark.

Tough town. Tough guys from that town.
