ESPN Says Carson Palmer Will Be Raiders Starting QB Against Chiefs
Well, that was quick.
On Tuesday evening, Oakland Raiders head coach wouldn't publicly say who will be the starting quarterback for the Raiders against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. It would either be Kyle Boller or Carson Palmer, who the team traded for on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, Al Saunders went on 610 Sports with Bob Fescoe and Josh Klingler and strongly suggestedPalmer could be ready to play this weekend against the Chiefs.
Later on Wednesday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on SportsCenter that it will indeed be Palmer starting this weekend.
Chiefs head coach Todd Haley was on SiriusXM NFL Radio this morning talking with Rich Gannon and Adam Schein and he said, like the Indianapolis Colts game, they'll have to spend some time preparing for two quarterbacks.
Apparently, they can now put their focus on Palmer.

He needs to have a solid game.
I know a couple of Raider fans who keep talking up their LT Veldheer. I’d love to see Tamba just absolutely own him all day.
We Don't Hear The Hate
Tamba won't win this game.
It will be won on 1st and second down by stopping the run.
The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.
I agree, didn't say anything to the contrary
But there will be pass rushing situations. And in those situations, I want to see Tamba dominate Veldheer – because I’m tired of hearing about Veldheer.
But the game is going to be won and lost on keeping McFadden contained, there’s no doubt about it.
We Don't Hear The Hate
Veldheer is pretty good...
Guy went from a D2 school to starting in the NFL as a rookie…that is nuts.

If their pass rush isn't any better than last week
it could be a long day for us. It won’t matter any way if they can’t stop McFadden.

He ended up wanting to go elsewhere.
Another one of those instances where we were interested and offering a deal, but the player decided he wanted to go somewhere else more.
I’ll see if I can find a link or two.

whoops, meant that as a reply to swagger

Aren't they concerned about injury?
Look at the injuries we’ve had because of the lockout. ALL players were “practicing” and “staying in shape” during the lockout…but without a legite offseason workout, a lot of guys have gone down with injuries they wouldn’t otherwise have sustained.
I’m sure Palmer’s in shape. But he hasn’t been in pads at a practice in over 5-7 months. One solid hit and I’m not sure he won’t shatter into a million pieces. The Raiders have a bye next week. That would’ve given them two and a half weeks to bring him up to speed.
Read an article that said Hue Jackson is clearly in charge at this point with Al Davis gone. As a coach, his strategy will always be short term upside (so he looks good as a coach). I think he may be pushing this too quick. Can you imagine Palmer going down with a season ending injury after giving up a 1st and a 2nd for him? Crazy.
That was my thought
they traded away their future to bring in Palmer. If they throw him on the field with a new team after sitting out since the end of last season, he may get hurt. On top of that, he’s had injury issues in the past. That could be devastating to the Raiders’ future, and their running out of draft picks to trade for QBs.

OK..
I’ve had to roll my eyes a little at the folks on here trumpeting that Carson Palmer is not in “football shape” like their his trainer or something.
But, I looked at a picture of Palmer on PFT in Raiders gear signing autographs or something, and the dude looks like a skeleton. He definitely doesn’t look like a football player. I’m surprised that he’ll be out there this week without having practiced with any team.
by bamachief5558 on Oct 19, 2011 11:14 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Not too worried
Carson Palmer averages 160 passing yards a game against us in 4 career games. That is his second lowest total against any team in the NFL….lowest being to the Jets with 152 passing yards per game.
So historically he doesnt do well against us. I know that means nothing but it kinda says something.
How long should you try? Until.

Go ahead and start him.
Can’t wait to see how Cassel responds to playing against the guy who kept him on the bench at USC. Five days of practice after 10 months of no football? Good luck out there man.

Wish it was Boller...
If you’re not a little more concerned now you’re crazy… He’s in just as much “football shape” as Boller… Hue Jackson developed him into a #1 pick and coached him in his best years in Cincy so he will know his system. This is still a champion, Heisman winner that knows how to win at this level too. All we can hope for is that his arm is shot. If not, the Raiders officially have the 2nd best QB in the division. You can say he’s past his prime, but the Raiders got better yesterday. Not good.

With 4 1/2 days to learn an offense and gain a rapport with the team.
I just can’t see how a guy could come in after 10 months of not playing and be a problem for us.
Doesn't matter...
He doesn’t have to learn the whole playbook in 4 1/2 days. And you don’t think that the Raider locker room is electric right now? He will buy the team dinner on Saturday and him and the rest of the cast offs there will be besties.

He doesn't need to know th whole playbook.

2) Run left
3) Run up the middle
4) Play action pass

I think all Palmer really has to do is take care of the football. I hope he comes out and under throws every thing and Flowers/Carr has a huge day. I just don’t see that happening.

RAC will focus on the run first & foremost.
We have to force the ball into rusty Carson’s hands & make him try to beat us.

Noway will he have his timing down for quick “timing routes”. So I could see them going vertical a looot. If we can stop the run game it shouldn’t matter anyways.

Here is one of the last throws Palmer made in the NFL.
Doesn’t look like his arm is shot to me. Nice velocity, and notice he doesn’t have to wind up. Looks like it takes a moderate amount of effort to toss it 35 yards downfield.

for all the naysayers claiming his 2010 season was sub-par
they overlook in his off season of 2010, he threw for 3970 yards with 26 tds. while dealing with TO and chad running any route they felt like instead of the assignment.

Interesting
Good move by the raiders .. This will make us think run run run . And they most likely will. But even Thoe he hasn’t played in 10 months , Palmer was still a NFL QB for 8 years . He knows how to play . Even if he isn’t entirely sure of plays , I’m sure he’ll learn enough to do justice . I hope the chiefs really focus on the run , AND pass , because they are doing both .

If he sees an open reciever I’m sure he’ll get them the ball . Will he be perfect ? Not a chance in heck . But doesn’t mean he won’t do bad . I can honestly say I think he’ll make a few good plays . I just hope the chiefs think that Palmer can’t do nething. The important thing to do is keep him out of rythem and not let him get comfortable

After sitting behind Palmer at USC.
You’d think Cassel may have a chip on his shoulder for this game
SEC no longer stands for Southeastern Conference. It now stands for Several Entertaining Chiefs.
I'm not saying, I'm just sayin.
I can see there is a lot of hate there, since Palmer was Cassel's best man at his wedding.
He will be exited about going against Carson, but it will have nothing to do with hard feelings about not playing at USC.
The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.
That was a joke.
I'll be sure to use this next time
SEC no longer stands for Southeastern Conference. It now stands for Several Entertaining Chiefs.
I'm not saying, I'm just sayin.
Who says it has to be hate?
Cassel should be wanting to out do his friend.
My brother in law and I are like that… we’re good friends, but we’re both competitive. We like to try and one up each other a lot… in video games, in building stuff, fishing, whatever.
If Cassel doesn’t play this game trying to show Palmer that he’s a badass there’s something wrong with him.
That's more along the lines of what I was thinking when I wrote that.
I’m the same way. Friends always try to out perform the others.
SEC no longer stands for Southeastern Conference. It now stands for Several Entertaining Chiefs.
I'm not saying, I'm just sayin.
Still not sure why everyone thinks Palmer has been sitting on a beach for the last 10 months
I think this is a bad sign for us that he is starting so quick, because Boller didn’t look terrible when Cambell got hurt. I also don’t get why people are saying he has lost it. Yeah he had some surgery, but he still threw for over 4,000 yards and 26 td’s on a bad Bengals team.
He may not have "lost it"
But realistically, there is no way he will be able to come in and be the old Carson Palmer. Not in the first game anyway. He very well may have an OK game, but IMO there isn’t any feasable way that he comes in and throws for 450 yards. It will take time and practice to develop timing with his new receivers and backs.
And if I’m wrong (I have been many times before), I’ll be the first to eat crow.
SEC no longer stands for Southeastern Conference. It now stands for Several Entertaining Chiefs.
I'm not saying, I'm just sayin.
He doesn't have to throw for 450 yards.
He has to be able to accurate chuck it deep to one of their speedy WR’s once we inevitably start cheating up to stop their very tough running game.
If he manages to do that, it can be a problem.
If not, then we can tee off on the running game and be a lot more comfortable.
We Don't Hear The Hate
True, and without Berry that could be a problem for sure.
I was only referring to RT when he brought up the old Palmer. That was they’re specialty. Those teams didn’t have a running game like Oakland does. If we do start cheating up against the run, which is inevitable, then he may burn us deep if he’s accurate enough, like you said.
Regardless of whether he’s accurate or not, it will take him some time to develop chemistry and timing. But, yeah, any QB with a strong arm can probably hit one of Oaklands receivers deep with their speed.
SEC no longer stands for Southeastern Conference. It now stands for Several Entertaining Chiefs.
I'm not saying, I'm just sayin.
i dont belive the will cheat up ont the run much
and hes not going to have many plays anyway he has to learn the system unless it the same one he had. and those palys will go like this go deep and pass not mush to worrie abour there . they will have a few bubble screens and a few slant plays but still time ing wont be there

We're not
Still not sure why everyone thinks Palmer has been sitting on a beach for the last 10 months
He hasn’t been sitting on a bench since he hasn’t been on a team because he chose not to be. He’s been passing the ball in t-shirts and shorts and even Croyle looked good without a pass rush.
Yeah he had some surgery,
Really? He had the tommy john surgery? Actually he refused that surgery.

Nah, I'd rather break their confidence and will to compete
Far more fun watching them fail on the field than off of it.
We Don't Hear The Hate
this is going to be a stop the run game
thats where the raiders are doing well anyway its not in the passing game. As for the CB they will have to trust there safetys because you will not be able to be cought drifting on any given play .Now with all that said we have seen him before and with what at the time was better WR and us at the time with not so good CB and safety .so this will be something to watch
3 things to rember so you know theywill run time, health and paly book
he’s not in football shape ,new team so timing wont be there , and a few palys in they play book he will have . so they will run about 30 times.
I was kind of expecting this
they did afterall throw Aaron Curry into a new position and started him the first week he arrived.
BOOM!
that said I believe Palmer will be in good shape against us.
he knows Jackson’s offense and he has enough tools in OAK to make it work
BOOM!
If Palmer and DHB can form a solid raport that could be a big problem for us
You can only expect so much from Kendrick Lewis
BOOM!
Though I agree with your assessment...
Not the kind of “tools” i was referring to.
Need to work on my delivery.
We Don't Hear The Hate
I'm not sure why everyone is underestimating this.
I think Palmer will play good, after all Chiefs made Painter, Bouman and countless other nobodies look good. Palmer isn’t a slouch, This is why their is so much let down, everyone just thinks the Chiefs will roll ove everyone every week. And even with their running game Boller would look good. I hope the Chiefs don’t take him lightly like a lot of you. I’m going to even say I bet he has a better game than Cassel, Cassel’s roller coaster is about due to go back down the hill.
I don't have a catchy, catch phrase.
