Are The Chiefs Really That Bad?

I was sitting here all day after my daughter woke me up with the Care Bears movie playing in the background.  I'm not sure what sparked but something hit me all of the sudden.  I was thinking that the Chiefs really aren't that bad of a football team.  Sure, their first couple of games this year was a disaster but that was due to a lot of things.  The Lions and Bills are both very good teams this year for one.  Also, the Chiefs are learning how to play without a couple key starters in Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry, and Tony Moeaki.  It also takes some time to adjust to a different offensive coordinator for the millionth time.

These last three games I've seen sparks of the Chiefs of last year.  Sure, the Vikings and Colts aren't every good teams but the Chargers are.  Besides, I agree with Todd Haley if the Chiefs play their mistake free football they will be in every game this season.  I then thought to myself that I haven't seen the Chiefs make too many mistakes this year especially after the first two games.  Were those games just bad luck?  Did the Chiefs not have a good game plan?  Were the injuries too much?  I'm not sure but so far I'm liking where the Chiefs are headed.

Turnovers

This is huge for the Chiefs team any team.  So far the Chiefs are ranked 26th with an average of 2 giveaways per game.  What I am about to tell you will be shocking.  In the last 3 games the Chiefs are ranked 1st in giveaways per game with 0.3.  So in the last 3 games the Chiefs have been the best team at not giving away the ball to the other team.  Last year, the Chiefs were ranked 2nd in giveaways with 1.1 per game just behind the Patriots.

In the takeaway department the Chiefs are ranked 26th with an average of 1.0 takeaway per game.  The same holds true in the last three games.  The Chiefs need to do better at going after the ball on defense.

The Chiefs are ranked 26th in turnover margin with -1.0 per game.  The last three games the Chiefs are tied at 7th with +0.7 turnover margin per game.  Last year, the Chiefs were ranked 9th in the same category.

Time Of Possession

I think that most coaches would say if you win the time of possession battle you will win the game.  That holds true in a lot of cases.  I have a table breaking down the Chiefs thus far each quarter.

Anything under 45% here is just horrible as you can see by the rankings in the NFL.  I'm wondering why the Chiefs can't play every quarter like it was the 3rd.  Last year, every quarter was above 50% for the Chiefs except for the 1st where the Chiefs had 47%.  That just shows you how the TOP battle translates to games won.

Penalties

This is another area that Haley just loves to focus on.  Once again, he knows that the Chiefs need to play mistake free to be in games.  We aren't the type of team that can come from behind.  Don't look at the Colts game as a freak exception to that.

I see right way that the Chiefs aren't doing too bad in the penalty department.  We could do better at away games but so far the Chiefs are under their average from last year.

Offense And Defense

It is a pretty simple game in where you score points than your opponent then you win the game.  I have a table where I break down the points per quarter.  I also look at points given up per quarter.

There really aren't any surprises when I look at the table above.  The Chiefs are ranked near the bottom of the NFL in every quarter on each side of the ball.  I then realized the first two games were just horrible.  What would it look like if I only took the last 3 games.

Wow, this is a big improvement on both sides of the ball.  The Chiefs still need to find a way to score in the first quarter.  If the Chiefs start games on fire then who knows how good they really can be.

Another big problem that I have noticed is that the Chiefs give up a lot of first downs.  Let's take a look at our passing defense.

It is crazy to think that last year we held opposing QB's to that low of a passing rating.  We have improved in the last three games in that area.  We need to do a better job at getting the other team off the field.  Now let's take a look at our rushing defense.

We aren't doing so bad against the runs this year.  The last three games we've been on fire at not allowing first down runs--and Adrian Peterson was an opponent in one game.  So far we are pretty consistent in this area from last year.

You can tell me that two of our last three were against horrible teams.  That's true but you can't deny that the Chiefs have been playing with more energy and fire.  The Chiefs have also had better game plans and are looking more prepared.  Haley knows what it takes to win in this league.  Will the players buy into his coaching?  I have one more questions and perhaps the most important of all.  Can the Chiefs consistently get better while playing mistake free football?
