Aaron Curry To The Raiders
Remember a few years ago when we were all arguing who the Kansas City Chiefs should select in the 2009 NFL draft? A popular guy for KC fans (including myself) to talk about was LB Aaron Curry, who ultimately went fourth in the draft, one spot behind the Chiefs, who selected DE Tyson Jackson.
Today, Curry has been traded, and he's coming to the AFC West.
Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that the Seahawks have traded Curry to the Oakland Raiders for two draft picks -- one in 2012 and another in 2013. The Raiders don't have a second, third or fourth round pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
UPDATE 4:37 p.m. ET: Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Seahawks will get a seventh-rounder from the Raiders in 2012, and a conditional mid-round pick in 2013.

Huh. Guess they're trying to speed up that defense
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Problem there is again Philly
spending all that on a Man to Man cover corner, and putting him in zone %95+ of the time
its also not a type of zone scheme that fits him
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
Its also a horrible defense in general
Juan Castillo is just bad.

but the torn ACL a few years ago and concussions made him “a risk” to keep I guess. I honestly don’t know how he’s doing in Arizona.

I caught some of their game vs the Vikings
I’m surprised they have 14 tackles as a team!
Your eyes tell you more than any statistics can.
I think he'll do good
I don’t think he’s played bad in Seattle, just hasn’t lived up to the potential/hype.
But also SEA has been asking him to do stuff that is outside of his skill set.
Watching the KC vs IND game right now and just had the thought, Chiefs should’ve gotten him and put him where Sabby plays, and where McGraw played when we had Berry… UPGRADE
Whaaa?
Curry fits best as a 4-3 OLB, and he’s just bad in coverage. They regularly tried him at covering tight ends and he failed miserably.

I remember last year
he kept on yelling and you could hear him over everything. Even when they were down a million points in the game against the Chiefs. He kept on celebrationg over every little thing. He was in the area of a tackle he would yell. Annoying.
Yea I still remember him tackling Charles after a 7+ yard run
And the guy stood up howling like he just made a tackle for a ten yard loss.

He also completely whiffed on a tackle after Thomas Jones received a short pass over the middle.
Any good LB would have destroyed Jones there in that vulnerable position.

I look at it this way
Curry is a liability in coverage and against the run, but is solid at getting to the passer. Kamerion Wimbley anybody?

Seahawk fans say he's great against the run, particularly when it comes to setting the edge
This has been a decided weakness for the Raiders with Quentin Groves back there at OLB.

Skill set.
Apparently he has a fine work ethic (although I have seen him take snaps off in games), but he’s just a terrible pass rusher. He wasn’t a good one in college either (only 9 sacks in 4 years starting), which made him a pretty awful choice for a top 5 pick.

No, trust me, he's a liability at getting to the passer.
I’ve watched every snap he’s played. His idea of pass rush is is trying to go right around or bull rush a tackle, and he fails at both. One time he had a clear shot at Jay Cutler untouched last year and completely whiffed on the sack.

LOL... Houston has exhibited excellent hand work and ability to get off of a blocker.
Apples to oranges man.
Did I say Curry was Houston in any shape or form?
Just because I used one game by Houston as an example in a comparison doesn’t mean Curry=Houston.
Against the Colts, Houston wasn’t getting off blockers. But he was relentless time and time again pressuring the QB through his blocker. This is what I mean, just because you can’t get off blocks doesn’t mean you lack pass rush. They’re mutually exclusive of each other.

It's a formula that
only the NFL knows…basically it comes down to if you gained more then you lost then you get none…I would say signing Breaston, Gregg, and McClain is more then Edwards and Smith.
Here is what I know
In 2010 we added Jones.Lilja,Wiegman,Shaun Smith, andJerhme Urban. The only players we lost were Jason Babin(wish we had him back) and Wade Smith and remember ,Babin wasn’t a starter for us.He was a late season addition. We got 3 starters 1 psudo starter for 2 backups when they were here in 2009.If we use that model then we should get at least1 pick.We also lost Kevin Curtis who is on IR with the Titans and Vrabel retired .I think that factors in,we also lost,Brodie Croyle,Rudy Neiswenger and Maurice Leggette ,although none made a final roster
And ultimately , that is what confuses me.Do they factor in players signed away, but didn’t make a final roster? That i’m not sure about but,I would think not.
Just tell it to call you Billie!
by saints_chiefsfan1979 on Oct 12, 2011 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Ok this is strange
The only FA NFL.com has us losing is Wade Smith, and it has us signing none…so I guess it matters if they were offered contracts or not. Here is an explanation from NFL.com
Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.
So you're right lol
Sounds like it’s determined in a secret meeting by a chosen clandestine council . How ever many smoke puffs rise up to the sky is how many picks we get. That is weird
Just tell it to call you Billie!
by saints_chiefsfan1979 on Oct 12, 2011 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Ha ha....Yeah
I’ve read from other reporters that nobody knows the exact formula. I guess the only FAs that count are only UFAs that are offered contracts by their teams…or in Nnamdi’s case, voided his contract.
We found the formula.
Offer your UFA’s you don’t want a insulting low ball money figure. And then if they sign with another team you get a draft pick.

Yeah, it's a bizarre way of doing things.

Trading a number one pick for a ham sandwich and an RC? Wow. Seattle saw no potential there.
Pete Carrol

I feel like a lot of players need good coaching...
especially in the early part of their career or it ruins them. Early in their career is a big time for development. You get to a point where you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I feel like Curry hasn’t really had good coaches in Seattle while he has been there. Fortunately for Curry, he is still young enough to develop.

Raiders are building a team to win now!
I keep hearing how the Raiders sign players for to much money. They better enjoy it before their window closes. Were still trying to rebuild after our window closed when Vermeil was the Coach.
People - please stop saying "He's worth a 7th rounder, wish we got him."
PLEASE READ THE ARTICLE AGAIN – THEY GOT TWO PICKS FOR HIM. A 7th next year AND a MID ROUND conditional in 2013.
Sorry for yelling, just frustrating. They paid more than you guys keep saying. And sounds like he’s not worth it at all. Quite a shame for one of the most hyped players by many folks on here for our NO. 1 2009 pick. Whew, that was close. Thank the gods.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
ok a 7th and mayde at most a 5th for the 4th over all pick
He was traded for a reason,I get it and I was never a big fan of his. But that isn’t that much to give up and he was a high pick for a reason. Most 5th -7th rounders don’t make the team, also it’s 1 this draft and 1 in next years draft. If it becomes a 5th then that means he performed well.Maybe Romeo could have gotten something out of him. After all,he made Tyson Jackson look decent. So,why couldn’t he do it for a guy playing out of position?

by my definition
I would call a mid round conditional pick to be a 3, 4, or 5 depending on his performance. I think you’re way off base of “mid round” by saying “at most a 5th”. Not to mention a huge contract as others have said. I’m just saying the guy is not coming “practically free” as some people seem to be characterizing this trade.
Maybe the guy DOES pan out, I have no idea. But, it sure doesn’t look good. And, I hope he does NOT pan out because it’s the Raiders.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
ESPN reports at most a 4th round pick in 2013.
Like I said ,if it goes up to a 4th it means he has performed making it a good trade. As far as his contract goes, he’s in his 3rd year of a 5 year deal.Don’t quote me on this ,but I imagine it was front loaded(most are so players won’t ‘’mail it in’’ at the end) so it probably isn’t as much as you think. In fact , I would bet he made most of his guaranteed money. And besides, when a player gets traded (i.e Matt Cassel) a restructured contract is usually hammered out and Curry at this point doesn’t have much leverage.
Just tell it to call you Billie!

Well, Cassel had the franchise tag at the time he was traded
So his contract situation was a completely different animal than with Curry.
But a restructure would almost have to be mandatory I’d think with Curry. You just can’t soak up his contract for what he’s going to (not) produce.
