Football Outsiders: Jackie Battle is most valuable RB in week 5
Football Outsiders put out their weekly Quick Reads today, ranking individual performances over the past weekend. Jackie Battle was the most valuable running back, just beating out Ryan Matthews of SD. Also notable: Matt Cassel was the 5th-ranked QB (tied with Curtis Painter, ironically), and Dwayne Bowe was ranked as the 3rd-best WR.

I never understood why people were so suprised by his performance
He’s always looked like a stud in practice and in preseason. He was just waiting for his chance to shine. I don’t think he will ever be a top starter, but he’s good enough to carry the ball 10-12 times a game for most teams.
He looked terrible this preseason
Better in previous ones.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
Really, that should have been our first hint that Battle had it in him.
If he’s been terrible in the regular season in years when he’s looked great in the preseason, then it stands to reason that he’d look great in the regular season the year he looked horrible in the preseason.

Because
He used to do a lot of things wrong. He’s always been a strong runner, but his mechanics were iffy. This last game was anything but iffy though. He did everything right and now he’s awesome, apparently. I hope he keeps it up!

He still freaks me out
bashing into a pile while holding on to the ball in one arm/hand. I swear I would tense up every time he was plowing into defenders. I was just waiting for him to cough it up and blow our momentum. It’s like I couldn’t accept that we were doing the things we were doing… waiting for the the inevitable heart-break.
I still think he needs to work on protecting the ball a bit more, but I hope he proves my concerns unfounded.
Battle on!

Bah
If he keeps his shoulders low, tucks the ball close to his body, and keeps his arms in tight he’s doing it better than most.

honestly at this point im afraid all of our backs are on verge of fumbling. those first 2 games hurt confidence
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
Whoa, this never registered with me during/after the game - check out the comment for Bowe
Each of Bowe’s catches produced a first down or a touchdown.
They also mention the PI he drew for yet another first down.
Nice!!
