Poll: Trickery/Pulling out all the stops?

800px-cafe-wall_medium

Haley has a reputation for taking chances--whether consistently going for it on fourth down or the occasional trick play.  Will he be pulling out all the stops for the Ravens game?  Some think that he'll be using Charles more often this game. I'm wondering if has he been setting up for certain plays all season.  I think if we had to win the Raiders game last week we might have seen more "trickery".

I doubt we see any tricks plays

Too big of a risk IMO.

You could be right....

Has Haley been more conservative for big games in the past? For some reason, I was thinking otherwise. I don’t know of an easy way to look that up—it’s not a stat. :) I guess we’d have to depend on AP readers’ memories.

Not a alot of tricks

But he could be even more aggressive on 4th downs. Haley has seemed to calm down the last few games. We might see a reverse something like that but I think thats as far as our tricks go.

Trick plays.

A play action pass on first down qualifies. A three step drop slant pass qualifies.

We don’t need fake reverses or screens that take three seconds to develop. Quick strikes early just to keep the Ravens honest qualify in my opinion.

Thomas Jones off guard on first and second down ain’t gonna get it done.

Expect to see more exotic sets and shifts.

Also some more use of spread formations.

Yeah. I think "trickery" will be any pass play that entails a double move or a timing route deeper than 8 yards.

I think Cassel will have to pass, and he’ll have to do it against the blitz, with the secondary sitting on the short stuff. If the slant is there pre-snap, I think they have to take it, even if it only nets 6 yards.

A good running game plan can be successful against this defense

Cincinnati beat these buggers in Cincy. Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott ran the rock 28 times for 95 yards and not one rushing TD. Flacco went 17 of 39, had 1 TD and threw 4 ints. I see the Chiefs D holding up well against this offense. If we can put points on the board and hold a lead, Flacco will beat himself. Cincinnati beat these guys, the Chiefs can too. No tom foolery, no ‘pulling out all the stops’ and trying the riskiest plays in the book. The Chiefs won’t need any. Run the ball to set up the pass and score on each possession. That is the plan.

Vice versa.

If they come out running, we’re lookin’ at run-run-punt, imo. Paradoxically, KC can’t play ball control, unless they show they’re willing and able to march down the field with the pass, if Baltimore stacks the box. And Baltimore’s optimal plan for success is to stack the box, and put the game on DBowe’s shoulders. If Baltimore honors the pass from the beginning, KC can bust a high percentage of big run plays. The difference in this game will be how smoothly all eligible receivers make the same reads that Cassel does, and they’re smart enough to take the OBVIOUS stuff.

you homers have been loving Jones to get the same carrys as JC,,,,why all of a sudden do you want to stop!

it’s been working so good lets continue this ….everyone seems to think Jones is just tearing up the defense,I think some people have said he is just wearing them thin….doing all the hard work so JC can do his damage…why not give Jones the ball his usual 15 times a game?…and Jamaal his 14….you all have wanted this ALL YR…dont give in now!! GO CHIEFS!

by dandychief on Jan 6, 2011 7:47 PM CST reply actions

"doing all the hard work so JC can do his damage.."????

Honestly we could put you out there to gain the same yards Thomas Jones has the 2nd half of the season. If wearing down defenses is getting gang tackled for a 1 yard loss every play….then what do you think real power backs like Michael Turner, Adrian Peterson, and Mike Tolbert are doing? Thomas Jones’ combination of sub par power when running and god awful speed only gets him yards on perfect blocking against absolutely unskilled front 7s. Jamaal Charles is the one doing the work for Thomas Jones. He’ll make a huge play and get tackled at the 1,2, or 3 and TJ comes in and pretty much steals the stat from Jamaal. This whole wearing down defenses thing for Jamaal is getting pretty asinine. If im a NT, and me and 2 other guys are gang tackling one person constantly, im not worn out at all. I didnt have to chase anyone down, I didnt receive a good hit, I didnt use much energy. And thats how players have felt when playing TJ.

oh, you've talked to the defenses of the teams we've played and they all told you that? really?

In JC25FoMVP's defense, they had a Jets game mic'ed-up from last year.

When Shonne Green came in for Jones, you could hear everybody on the D side of the ball yelling “#23! WRAP UP! #23! WRAP UP!” alerting each other to Green’s presence.

Everyone could see that Green was somehow more dangerous, and yet, upgrading to Ladainian Tomlinson hasn’t had nearly as big an impact as some of us thought.

He has had some good runs virtually every week.

If he gets a good hole, he’s fine. He’s a good all-around running back. But I think it’s important to remember that KC’s running game’s tipping point was supplied by Jamaal Charles.

I’m a “system HB” kind of guy, who’s leery of star running backs. Running game flows from the O-Line. BUT when the O-Line isn’t dominating games, a great runner can put you over the top. It’s STILL not championship football without the O-Line, or Detroit would have more Lombardi trophies. I just can’t deny the spark that Charles brings.

Defending Thomas Jones?

by Aiken_Drum on Jan 7, 2011 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

No UPs, anyone who has played on a football team knows that.

its common sense. As far as fatigue it takes less strength to take down a guy with the help of two other defenders than one guy putting his momentum and force all into one defender. Why is Jones being gang tackled? Because one Weis keeps running dumbass tosses to him and two he isnt choosing a hole quick enough. And when he does find a hole he cant accelerate and gets leg tackled. Watching him play makes me sick.

by JC25FoMVP on Jan 7, 2011 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

He was very quick and aggressive against the Titans, to my eye.

None of the hop-step hesitations you see when the holes aren’t there. I think the running game is more dangerous with Charles on the field. I also think the running game is riskier with Charles on the field. I think there are multiple reasons the Chiefs are sticking with Jones, and one of them is to set up Charles in situations where the probability of his being stood-up and stripped of the ball (or hurt with a twisting gang tackle) can be minimized, by seeing what the O-Line is giving them.

by hmills110 on Jan 8, 2011 6:40 AM CST up reply actions

From the heart, JC25. I like that.

I’ll leaven what you’re saying with an unremarked consideration. I really think those early throwaway plays give the Chiefs a sense of whom they think they can victimize on the front 7. It’s not so much that they’re being worn down as they’re being analyzed. On any given Sunday, maybe Waters owns the guy in front of him, and you know that’s where to make your hay, after a couple snaps. Then on 3rd down, you bring in Charles, when the D is worried about you maybe passing it, and attack the soft spot.

So I’m saying maybe those runs to Jones early are intelligence-gathering, to save Jamaal for later. By that theory, maybe you have Jones in there for the first series, and then phase him out until/unless you’re sitting on a lead late.

But give the coaches some credit. We ALL see how slow Jamaal is to scrape himself off the field, at times. You want to go with the hot hand, but you want him in one piece. Now that it’s playoffs time, there’s really nothing to save him for, any more. The coaches have kept their WHOLE TEAM healthy for the whole season (a blip for McCluster and Chambers. a tiny blip for Albert.). I think if Jamaal were getting 20+ carries all season, he’d be one banged-up Ferrari.

As for the “hard work” versus “damage” thing, there was a game this season where Jones was the guy who caught the nice hole and took it 50 yards (or so) inside the 10. Jamaal finished off with the score on that drive. The hero is sucking oxygen on the sideline, and the guy with fresh legs coasts past a defense that just chased you 60 yards down the field.

I clearly recall that, 70 yard run vs Jacksonville

but thats only happened once. I doubt the whole putting TJ in there to see the defenses tendencies thing is really what Weis and Haley are aiming for but I respect your opinion. Bottom line, we are better off playing JC and Jackie and if not that…pas the rock. Thomas Jones hasnt made an important play in weeks. If it was LJ he wouldve been long gone by now.

by JC25FoMVP on Jan 7, 2011 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

It's just a theory that fits the facts. Maybe not the best theory.

As a scientist, I’m not really stuck on any one theory until it stands head and shoulders above all others. Mostly I just throw stuff out there when folks are dead certain when there aren’t enough facts to really draw such conclusions.
