HBO has a great piece on the life of Lombardi. One thing that came out was that he was bipolar and hard to be around at times. At the end of the day, his players loved him and would kill for him because he truly cared for them. Haley patterns some of his tough love tactics after Lombardi. The way he pats players behind the helmet is exactly like Lombardi. Outside of the fact that Haley has read Vince's book, here is why I think Haley like Lombardi is bipolar and needs a stable influence on the staff
He preaches a level headed approach - yet he let's his emotions get in the way of common sense -
example - he yanks Cassel last week. You don't do this to the leader of your team. Haley knows it, he just lost his head
His game changing calls on 4th down are not consistent with a well thought out strategy -even for a risk taker.
-example- a level head coach plays the odds and takes risk when the odds are in his favor. Haley know this... again he cannot control his emotions. His 4th down calls and play calling are not level headed in key situations
A key member of his coaching staff is leaving after 1 year
I don't buy the spin. No way Weis leaves if the work environment is stable. Are you telling me that Weis didn't think this out when his son was a junior in HS? Haley is not consistent. Weis has the money and rep to walk. This indicates that he was not going to put up with the mood swings of Haley.
We will never know the truth. I have been around some bipolar people. Haley shows all the signs. He needs to find another level headed OC or this work in progress with get messed up pretty quick.
