Pioli's Big Board

This is Mocking Dan's Top 100 of his actual Top 200. If the Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli was parsing Dan's list from www.mockingthedraft.com who would we, could we, and should we look at? Lets dissect the best 2011 NFL Draft talent by scheme, then by need, then we will have a good criteria in place for the first three rounds of the Chiefs Draft. We have picks number 21, 55, and 88 around 122, 150, 154, 186, and 218 (ballparkish) as we sit today. Dan's top 200 list here
So lets go :)

Star-divide

Lets eliminate the 4-3 defensive players and the Power Scheme blockers.

I just put the NT's and Ends and OLB together

IMO by the end of the Chiefs draft we will select one of each. Maybe just one or two of these though

the 250-260 lb DE/OLB would be our SOLB
the 280-300 lb DE’s would be 3-4 DE’s

From Iowa as a sleeper pick in the late rounds. Solid player with pasha rush skills. Maybe a bit sloppy with his feet but could be coached up.

by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 24, 2011 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Why

I mean true we might not re-sign all our guys, but we are stacked depth-wise & starter-wise ATM. I could maybe see a late late guy, but that’s about it.

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 25, 2011 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

I could see it.

Maybe early, maybe later….but this draft seems stacked with potential 3-4 DEs, so I could see Pioli getting grabby if a talented one falls.

If one falls to like the 5th sure

But with other positions of need, and TJ’s late season resurgence I just don’t see it early on.

Projected 7th Rd.. 6-3…273lbs…4.79.. 2nd Team Big Ten.. plus Pioli friends with the Iowa coach…had a good game against MIZZOU..I thought he looked almost good as Clayborn..(within reason)..practice squad add some strength and weight…just a thought..

Similar type. DT/DE suited for 3-4 DE.

Well done. Good read. Rec'd for sure!

I think our round 1 and round 2 picks will fall to us due to some unknown reason. My third round will be a slight reach but not that much.

1. 17. Mike Pouncey | 6’5, 320 pounds | G/C | Florida
2. 46. Stefen Wisniewski | 6’3, 302 pounds | C | Penn State
3. 89. Jerrell Powe | 6’2, 340 pounds | DT | Mississippi

Off season - sign Hali / Gilberry (#1 and #2 sack leaders) Bates (from sea)@ OC
Free Agency - Sign Breaston (ARI) or Smith (NYG)or Jones (GB) @ WR Ngata or Franklin @NT
Pick 1 - Cameron Heyward DE Ohio State (Team Captain)

You want to draft 2 centers?

Trapped in the past, Craig finds himself leaping from blog to blog, putting things right that once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.

Yeah, that's how I took it.

I don’t like it much, but it would actually seem to fit Pioli’s style of hedging his bets on a position that he really wants to improve.

i agree with your picks

i think pouncey would be a great pick up in the first round

by BEEf_CHIEF on Feb 3, 2011 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I'm thinking...

1) 9. Aldon Smith | 6’4, 258 pounds | DE | Missouri

2) 46. Stefen Wisniewski | 6’3, 302 pounds | C | Penn State
I would love Torrey Smith at this spot and would be my first choice for the 2nd round, but I’m realistic and it probably won’t happen but if it does then that would be badass

3) 80. Sione Fua | 6’2, 307 pounds | DT | Stanford
He needs to bulk up by 20 lbs or so in order to be a great NT in my opinion but a solid pick for the 3rd round

I really like this, Steve

thanks for the leg work.
However, I’d like to throw a wrench in everyone’s cogs. I don’t think folks are giving raw talent and our coaches enough credit in this draft. I see 6 Chiefs in the Pro Bowl this year, 5 of which were on a team that had 0 representatives this year. Yeah, some players stepped up their games, but it was ultimately the result of some good coaching. I wouldn’t count a guy like Carimi out because some draft geek says he has heavy feet. If Pioli sees talent and coachability, I think they take a chance.
With that being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing Carimi, Costanzo, Wisniewski, or Solder (as much as I despise CU) taken as our first pick. I’m also liking Fua’s size at NT…not many there looking built for a 3-4 NT IMO.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Jan 24, 2011 10:46 PM CST reply actions

You Like Fua's size?

That’s like his Worst attribute when talking NT.

Also don’t see Carimi just because he has bad Athleticism, not bad feet lol.

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 25, 2011 12:38 AM CST up reply actions

How do you figure?

He’s not overly tall and can put on some weight/muscle. I thought it was a position of leverage. shrug

Good Work,,,Useful Post

I feel that our ability to address the #2 WR position in FA will determine how our draft goes. If we are successful in signing a quality #2 WR during the FA signing frenzy, then we can address our needs for some “beef” early in the draft. If there isn’t a quality FA WR, or someone else outbids us, or if the CBA situation stops the FA signings, then we will need to address the WR position early in the draft. If we don’t come up witih another good receiver, part of every opponent’s prep for us next season will be to watch video of this years’ Raiders and Ravens games.
As for your work…excellent. You have provided a framework for our draft theories. Thanks.

by Special K on Jan 24, 2011 11:26 PM CST reply actions

Craig and Chief I got dazed by the excellent post.

I actually want us to go almost all Defense in the draft. The guys I wanted in round 2 sound like they are 4-3 guys. If we can address the #2 wide out before the draft that is. When I think about it better I see us getting someone to help Hali on the QB pressure in the first round. A nose tackle in the third. The second is up in the air for me. Maybe a OL/OT to help give Cassel time to hit our free agency Wide out/ or Bowe or Moeaki or whoever.

by Pixel_Junkie on Jan 24, 2011 11:33 PM CST reply actions

Can't do that

draft has to be balanced.
Going all D during the Vermeil years is what crippled our offense down the line.

by Your_Moms_Boyfriend on Jan 25, 2011 8:29 AM CST up reply actions

Nice work Steve!

I have two questions.

1] When you listed ‘Now let’s eliminate those positions we have good depth in or are probably not looking for a 1st-3rd rounder in.’ you listed RB’s and QB’s. However, later you broke those positions down in the section of ‘what is left by position groups’ Can you explain that discrepancy?

2] Do you think it’s viable that the Chiefs take a CB or FS in rounds 1-3?

I wouldn't mind

a John Connor type fullback drafted somewhere by the Chiefs. We don’t seem to be set at that position and could certainly use someone that could put some pop into people leading the way for Jamaal.

Good thought

and congrats on being the first one to bring that up here. I think many underestimate the effects of a great fullback on both the running and passing games.

I can’t say that I’m familiar with the FB prospects, but we should keep an eye on the late rounds/UDFAs to see if we can improve here.

1) NT P Taylor Baylor
2) WR L Hankerson Miami
3) C/G G Moffitt Wisc
4) DE/LB B Reed Ariz
5) CB J Brown Colo
5) ILB C Mathews Ore
6) RB A Bradford USC

Steve, you eliminated a ton of potential 3-4 DEs in your first cutdown.

And I mean that literally, there’s about 2000lbs of humanity in that list any 300+lbs of which I wouldn’t mind seeing in a Chiefs uni. :)

Also wondering why you tried to eliminate strong safeties when we desperately need an understudy for McGraw….

by Brsrkr on Jan 24, 2011 11:54 PM CST reply actions

McGraw is a SS?

That’s news to me I thought he was a back-up FS.

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 25, 2011 12:36 AM CST up reply actions

I think they're interchangeable......

Left and right safeties, in Crennel’s defense. His skill set is more suited to strong safety, I think, except that he’s getting too slow to cover Todd Heap. And later in the season, after Lewis was clearly the starting FS, McGraw usually substituted for a LB in the nickel, and that just seems like more of a strong saftey’s role to me.

Anyway, was thinking that we have two young guys in Lewis and Berry who have center field ability, so why eliminate a thumper type safety from consideration?

"The key to victory is not your strength, but your opponent's weakness." -T.

by Brsrkr on Jan 25, 2011 12:58 AM CST up reply actions

But they aren't

Did Lewis play up this year? I didn’t notice it I saw Berry up mostly. And Berry is a Center-fielder and a Thumper-type BTW. :p

I want somebody who can do both jobs, more often then not a SS can’t. That’s why I love Tejay Johnson.

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 25, 2011 1:42 AM CST up reply actions

Nah, misunderstood I think.

I was talking about the positions, not necessarily the players.

Lewis played deep mostly, Berry can play deep (or where ever Berry wants to play). So I’d be more comfortable if we got a dedicated strong safety than if we got another center fielder type like Lewis. Of course, it would be awesome to have a secondary full of Berrys….

Pat Devlin - QB/Delaware

I’m on the Chain Gang for the University of Delaware and saw Devlin play live every home game for 2 years just like I did with Joe Flacco. Devlin might not be as polished as Flacco was coming out, but KC did have a scout at UD’s last regular season home game who told me that Pioli and Haley are both very high on Devlin and Pioli had called the scout directly to get a first-hand account of his game. I like Cassel, but wouldn’t be a bad idea to grab Devlin as a backup for a year or two. Can’t be worse than Brodie (I haven’t won a game since I started getting paid) Croyle.

One good thing about the Combine (in my opinion)

is the fact that a player that your team wants may have a bad day at the combine and fall in the draft. A player that your team didnt even think would be there when you are set to draft might be there because of a few slips during drills. If you have 4 years of college tape, or less for underclassmen, then the Combine should just confirm what you seen on tape.
It just surprises me each year of the amount of players that shoot up the draft boards and others that fall just as far.

some of those measurements are very Suprising

Hankerson lost 2 inches in height yesterday. 6’1 now instead of 6’3.

I think the combine affects fan and experts opinions more than teams

I remember several interviews with coaches and GM’s at the combine that say it’s more about the interviews and complete physicals for them. If a guy puts up a surprising time one way or another they may go back and review his tape, but all in all, they’re going to go off game film more than anything.

Paea seems to be very good as a 4-3 1-gap penetrating DT. I quizzed KaloPheonix about this and it is not what the Chiefs are really doing except in the Nickel package when Wallace Gilberry comes in to do that. In a different defensive scheme (like Dallas maybe) he would fit. Else, a 1st round pick on a player in a sub-package is probably a non-starter. Sorta like Von Miller would be in the Chiefs Defense

If Phil Taylor keeps playing well at the Senior Bowl

He might just become my new favorite 1st round pick for the ole Chiefs, depending on what we do, if possible, in free agency.

Has anyone truly fathomed the ramifications of the potential work stoppage if there is a lockout and the consequences it will have on the draft? If teams can’t fill needs with free agents, then needs may become even more glaring and reaching for teams in the draft. While many say Pioli wouldn’t take a WR in the 1st round, if it’s considered a major need, which many speculate it is, then a WR might just be what the doctored ordered at #21, since there’s no certainty of free agency and adding that piece, which Pioli has done or attempted to do in the past.

Noun 1. pander – someone who procures customers for whores (in England they call a pimp a ponce)

England – a division of the United Kingdom
offender, wrongdoer – a person who transgresses moral or civil law

I was more referencing the talking heads and mock draft boards.

what is it worth to say Von Miller’s agent to go from a late 1st pick to a top-10 pick with a Mayock or someone else’s endorsements?

Hmmmmm

Doesn’t matter unless a team is super lazy and actually goes by what Mayock is saying(McDaniels anyone?) besides actually doing the work themselves or using their Scouting Department.

Really one of the big reasons he’s talked about in the top 10 is because the Cards talked to him, and he’d be a perfect fit for what they want there. On top of which Pass Rushers are in high demand, and he’s the best pass rusher so…

He is a Jack-Backer

at 237 he is not a run stuffer. It amuses me that some say he can man up on a TE that would be 20-30 lbs heavier? someone is playing the system and as they say it only takes one team like Denver to make the pick. DO you think if Miller had to take down Tebow or Ratlisberger one on one he could?

Jack?

I thought it was Will? All I know is if a 4-3 team drafts him, they’re gonna be sorry. I swear if Miller were 20-30 Lbs heavier he’d be Derrick Thomas incarnate.

he has the will to do it

I am not doubting that Von Miller will do something in the NFL. You think he is a DJ?

Mmmm...I see what you did there

I don’t think so, I see him as a Pass Rush specialist, he’s definitely got the talent to be a great one. And have you seen how long his arms are, 34" is a good size for a lineman let alone a LB and his are longer then Dorsey’s which is insane.

Actually, I can't remember which "Draft" anaylyst it was

used a few lines from Scott Wrights blog to sell the whole Arizona is interested story….

I had read that and some lazy analyst “with cred” moves it up the line and then you have this feeding frenzy of interest on the rest of the “lazy” mocks cause so-so said it based of a someone else that was not properly quoted or credited

title is a bit misleading

since this has absolutely nothing to do with Pioli

shouldn’t Steve of just titled it “Here is my big board”?

by Home skillet on Jan 28, 2011 1:33 PM CST reply actions

Let me call Pioli and see if he will share his Big Board with us :)

Do you think he has any of the players I removed from this board on his Board?

May need to check this guy out and adjust.

Chris Neild DL West Virginia 6017 313 32 11
Monday Practice Notes: Neild was a load against the run. He kept square to the line of scrimmage and stayed low. He did need to do a better job working against pressure.
Tuesday Practice Notes: The nose tackle is what he is. And today he was nearly impossible to drive off the football, even an inch. He stays square to the line. He can split double teams. He simply has not been much of a presence in pass rush drills.
Wednesday Practice Notes: There was an instance or two when Neild was moved off the ball. Those came when he battled against downblocks when the offensive linemen had an angle advantage.
Analysis: The best run stuffing defensive lineman throughout the week, bar none. Neild is limited in his abilities, but what he does well; he really does well. A two gap nose in college, Neild was almost impossible to move off the snap during practices. He does not present much up-field presence, but 34 teams will be very intrigued with this legitimate 0 technique. It also helped Neild tremendously to show up at 313 pounds, instead of near 300 (which was his playing weight). Nose tackles are rare, but Neild cna get the job done.

You took out Von Miller, but he played in a 3-4....

but then again, he probably won’t make fall to the 21st spot. He looks quick and fast as a rush linebacker.

My Chiefs Big Board

1. Von Miller OLB- Tamba Hali and Von Miller could be a nightmare for QBs
2. Phil Taylor NT- Taylor is 6’4 327 could add some size to the front 7
3. Mike Pouncey C- If he is like his brother I want him on the Chiefs
4. JJ Watt DE/DT- This guy is a monster reminds me of a Aaron Smith or Richard Seymour type of player
5. Julio Jones WR- Great size, but drops to many passes

2011 Offseason Wishlist:
1. Sign Tamba Hali to a Multi Year Deal
2. Sign Haloti Ngata Out of Free Agency
3. Bring Back Mike Vrabel for One More Year as a Back up
4. Draft WR Austin Pettis in the Second Round
5. Draft OLB Von Miller in the First Round
