I have seen the ongoing discussions on who tho draft first. Plenty like the Nose Tackle for a first round pick. I don't for a couple of reasons. Of all the positions being bandied about, the nose tackle position is the one place a first round pick would be a waste. Why? Take the leap when you get to the jump.
First, if what we have seen of Dorsey and TJax is proof of an old adage, "it takes three years to develop defensive lineman.", I do not think anyone in the Chief's Nation, including management, want to wait that long of a time. We want to get better now, not in three years. Now it is true supposition that of all the D-Line being discussed this year, no one in our range at pick #21 is being touted as the next All-Pro, starts immediately stud NT. The combine should help with this equation, but why pick if the guy will not be starting?
Second, is the dollars. We already are paying 2 top 5 picks dollars to play on the d-line, dollars which correspond to their high status. Besides having 2 highly paid defensive lineman which some are skeptical of their abilities, we draft a NT and it makes 3 high priced guys. If Dorsey hits FA and wants to play for his Saints, if TJax doesn't pan out, then we are left holding the tab. A high priced tab for a D-Line that never materialized. I believe the NT position will be addressed but not at the #1 spot.
Now, if after all is said and done, a NT prospect who can start immediately and pay dividends all season is available when we pick at #1 we certainly would have to reconsider our process. I don't expect it to happen. As far as what we do have going on the d-line, it can be enhanced with some young bloods at the NT spot. Dorsey may stay 10 more years and TJax may be a beast next season as it is his third season. Hells Bells Toribio may even pan out.
So you now have my two cent's worth of speculation about the first pick. Even if we pick a NT with the first pick, I believe we want a player who comes in and starts. As we saw last year, having rookies who can play is huge and it is not to much for a fan like me to expect a first round rookie to come in on a team with holes and fill in immediately. Pioli has me thinking that more than one hole be eliminated with draft picks. Go Chief's!!
