Grading the Chiefs 2010 Draft

I am basing this largley on the rookies 2010 performance/contributions and the value they presented at that pick compared to what they contributed in 2010, not as much on a hypothetical future projection:

#5 Eric Berry, A stepped in immediatley and played from day 1. Night and day difference from Mike Brown. Has room for improvement but thats another debate. Remarkable concept using your 1st rd draft pick on a guy who make an impact year 1 (thats you TJackass!)

#36 Dexter McCluster WR/RB, D, take away his September performance and its an F. This isn't a judge on him as a person but his ability to contribute to the Chiefs. At best he will be Dante Hall 2.0, drafted at #153, overreach, too small and gets pushed around easily, a few hghlights on Sportscenter doesn't warrant this high a pick.

REDRAFT: Nate Allen, this would have put Jon McGraw on the bench and soldified our safeties for years to come.

#50 Javier Arenas C, decent player but an overreach for a nickel back who can normally be found in mid and late rouunds. A decent player who contributed and even briefly flirted with the slot wr on offense (Roy Green 2.0?) but the Chiefs had other more pressing needs.

REDRAFT: Terrence Cody, yes hes fat and lazy, Pioli got over that when he drafted Tyson Jackson. Puzzling we go to a 3-4 but don't address the NT, the Ravens game taught us well without bulk in the middle your whistling dixie.

# 68 Jon Asamoah A, saw some playing time even in the backfield as a FB, has a nasty streak, could he be our next C? Remember in 09' we drafted Alex Magee here who was swapped to Tampa for a Doug Williams worn pair of socks

#93 Tony Moeaki A, 2n on the team in rcvg and broke Tony Gonzalez rookie mark. The only other viable receiving threat besides Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe. Without him this may be a 6-10 team.

#136 Kendrick Lewis B, not a bad pickup iin the 5th, had been projected as high as 2nd rd, had some inconsistency though but good grab in the 5th

#142 Cameron Sheffield, I for incomplete/injured. showed promise in pre-season prior to injury, may save the Chiefs a draft pick in 2011.

  42%  A
Overall B+

But then again they prolly were already laying the plans to trade

Seymore so Tjax would be a nice fit as a rotational guy until he grasps a starting roll

Back then if you wanted Raji(like I did) everybody was telling you how wrong you were and that Curry was the next ‘DT’

Cassel out, Andrew Luck in!

by BAMFSpecialOps on Jan 18, 2011 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

yeah

honestly id still take tjax over curry. the LB for KC have gotten much better and TJax just finished his second year. takes 3 for a dlineman just look across the line to dorsey and see that proof.l

Curry is a DJ clone, we don't have a spot for him

At least there is a starting spot for Tjax if he can win it.

Jackson missed 5 games with a MCL tear

Had he played all those games, the stats he would of gathered would of had fans praising him and his progression from year 1

I'm with you

Kalo takes tons of time to actually break down tape, and according to him Jackson’s looked light years better this year than last, pretty much just as good as Smith.

Yet people continue to hammer away that he hasn’t improved, he sucks, yadda yadda yadda.

Do I wish we’d taken Raji or Matthews? Yeah. But Jackson has improved, and should continue to do so.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

Sanchez > Tyson Jackson

I'd rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave

by ArrowDread on Jan 18, 2011 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

I don't get your point.

In the same offseason, we got an equally unproven albeit older QB, paid him more money and still didn’t have all those weapons around him.

by craig in calgary on Jan 18, 2011 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

I will debate that.

Cassel had the benefit of playing QB with the most dangerous ground game in the NFL. We seen how great Cassel can be when he has to throw the ball, and there is no threat of the run (yikes).

Cassel is okay, better than some worse than some, Sanchez has a lot more upside, not to mention he took his team to the AFC Championship 2 years in a row.

The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.

by saskwatch on Jan 18, 2011 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

Like I said, best O-Line in football for Sanchez and two of the best WR's there are....

His running game isnt shabby in any way either….

I think Sanchez would look pathetic with what we have here.

Right. Sanchez got them there...

Against IND- 18/31, 189 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT

I’m pretty sure they won despite him, just like the usually do. The man has maybe 3-4 good games a season, if that.

by MNchiefsfan on Jan 19, 2011 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

Sanchez is doing nothing except tagging along for the ride

for the second year in a row. Also he had the benefit of the 4th rank rushing attack as well as the 3rd ranked defense to carry him all season

A lot of players > Tyson Jackson

Does that make him a bad player. no. He’s decent and has shown progression. remember he did miss 5 games this season with a MCL tear. Hindsight is a bitch. Why play it. More than half the time there was a better pick when you look at it a couple of years afterward. We’ve got Jackson now and whether the fans like it or not, he’s not going anywhere soon

yeah well hindsight is 20/20………….okay so maybe i just dont like this post in general but yeah there had never been a draft where every pick was the right one. plus tjax isnt done for. remember all the talk last year of dorsey being a bust. any dline position needs time to adjust. in college they are much stronger and faster then the offensive counterpart 99 timeout of 100. not the same in college. they need time to learn the position. alex magee…….yeah bad pick.

2010 draft was a pleasant surprise....

As much as 09 was disappointing. ….
I like your take on the re-draft. That is what I would have wanted as a GM. (Nate Allen and Mount Cody)
You might be a tiny bit tough on DEX and a little too easy on Arenas. Nice job on others except I would have gone about 1/2 grade lower across the board.

I think the grade on Dexter was just right

Aside from the kickoff return on opening night, he did nothing great on special teams.

On offense, he was exactly what everyone thought he was going to be. A player without a position that the coaches think they should be using but dont really know how.

Dexter did nothing that Jamaal Charles couldnt have done better.

by ChiefDJ on Jan 18, 2011 6:07 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I totally agree

People say we could have used him more, but the stuff we could have used him in was the stuff Jamaal was gaining 40 plus yards on. Any trick play we couldve ran for McCluster, Jamaal could have done 100x better. Thats why I dont think as many plays were drawn up for him because if we actually gave it to Dex on some of those fake reverses, only god knows how many big JC runs we could have missed out on.

by JC25FoMVP on Jan 18, 2011 6:49 PM CST up reply actions

They seemed to have all those great ideas how to use Dex but in the final result....

as year wore on he was used less and less. Some due to injury some due to lack of being able to play regularly as Slot Receiver. Only in “Gimmick” situations.

my biggest problem with the 2010 draft

taking Arenas in the 2nd round. I understand that he is a decent nickel back and an excellent returner in college, but he did not do much this year in the way of returns. The beginning of the season he looked decent, but did not do much after the 4th game in returns. Think we could have gotten more with this pick.

and i don’t understand why everyone is so down on Dex…

I feel that it is on the coordinators to find out how to use him and draw up plays to get him the ball in space…

by SFLChief on Jan 18, 2011 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

Dex was drafted for specific purpose ....

to use his quickness on returns and in backfield but mainly as a slot receiver. One who would create mis-matches and problems for opposing nickles, double teams and base defenses. He showed flashes but was not a game changer. I saw very little effect and it seemed he was used less and less as year went on….. I love the guy…. he just did not have desired impact as such I high pick is expected to have.

by CatChief on Jan 18, 2011 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

he was used less and less because the offense had evolved while he was injured. im still very high on dex/s potential yeah potential gets coaches fired but he has speed and quickness you just dont see every draft even if he is small.

Yea, but like you said he's also going through a position change

I haven’t given up on Dex as the slot guy just yet. He still has all offseason to continue to learn how to be a Wide Reciever.

I would give Dex an Incomplete

I think we are all forgetting that he was having to learn a completely new position as a rookie AND missed a lot of playing time. It’s hard enough to come into the pros playing a position you’ve played all your life, let alone what Dex was being asked to do. But no worries. I can see Dex and Bowe attending that WR camp this year and Dex having an impact season next year.

Not sure how...

You can give Arenas a C yet Asamoah an A.

sure, Arenas wasn’t as good as we wanted him to be as a returner, but he really showed up as the NB. Made a lot of plays in that position.

Asamoah has hardly seen the field… and when did he play some FB? I don’t recall that.

Arenas gets a B, Asamoah gets an N/A or Did Not Compete.

I agree with the rest though...

Although Dexter isn’t Hall 2.0, I don’t think. DMC played at a much higher level in college than Hall. We still haven’t seen his full potential, I don’t think. He wasn’t really worked into the game plans this year as much as we were hoping.

Pick #50 Arenas was a solid C. No more.

He played , but you expect that from a 2nd round pick. I was disappointed with his performance as Nickel Back and inability to cover slot recievers and TEs. He demonstrated some potential as punt returner but that talent can be had in later rounds. (see Brandon Banks and Josh Cribbs -undrafted FAs)

Pick #36 McCluster may yet prove a solid value but as of now I only give that pick a solid C for seeing playing time. He cannot be classified as a starter or Key Contributor.

Berry and Moeaki were an A. Lewis is a B , (he would not have started unless Chiefs sucked at safety. Asamoh and Sheffild can be considered incomplete.

Thus Chiefs rate a Solid B. ….with a star…..and chance to improve.

"You talkin' to me? You TALKIN' to me ?" - Travis Bickle

by CatChief on Jan 19, 2011 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

FAIL

asamoah an A?? seriously. and that isnt even my biggest gripe. mccluster getting a D and then you want to draft another safety. blah horrible IMO. berry and lewis will be great as time goes. . yeah nate allen had a good year but seriously drafteing safety rd 1 and then rd 2?? come on. Pioli would have been torched. plus mccluster was great to start the season and you cant discount that. i mean seriously his punt return against SD on monday night could have been the catalyst for the entire season not to mention the great catch and run against SF week 3. then he got hurt…..high ankle sprain. WORST sprain for a speed guy there is. you just dont rebound from that quickly. its slow to heal and lingers the entire season. plus once he did return the offense had evolved. Mccluster might not be the returner Dante was but he will be much more valuable to the offense. the arenas pick okay maybe cody there( i was a big fan of his pre draft) but still i dont even think arenas deserved a c rating. he made plays on defense blitzing and a few in coverage. he was a rookie and will get better. the other grades i agree with but mccluster doesnt deserve a D. if you give sheffield an incomplete because of injury Dex needs to get a redo as well. .

by Hendrix on Jan 18, 2011 1:15 PM CST reply actions

way too hard on McCluster

He had over 1000 total yards, including kick returns… scored big TDs in 2 games, and started every game when healthy.

That’s not too shabby for a rookie. Especially one that hasn’t really been utilized fully in the offense yet.

He brought much needed speed and explosiveness, and the best is clearly yet to come.

I liked Cody, too… but dex should get at least a C or B.

It's all about the gameplan

by stagdsp on Jan 18, 2011 6:17 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Consider that ....

Jacoby Ford was a 4th round WR/returner and B Banks and Josh Cribbs were undrafted. You can’t consider McClusters impact as that of a starter. He was a part time player at best. His impact on games lessened as year went on. He gets a solid C as a part time player drafted very high in 2nd round (36th overall). I’d want more from #36 overall if I were a GM…. wouldn’t you.?

"You talkin' to me? You TALKIN' to me ?" - Travis Bickle

by CatChief on Jan 19, 2011 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

Ford was a great pick, would have liked to get him in the 4th.

Yes, I’d want more from Dex, and they DID get more than that from him… he made some big plays on offense. It’s hard for the “what have you done for me lately” crowd to remember, but McCluster had a positive impact on the offense in 2010.

He had basically the same receiving numbers as Chambers (yes, I know Chambers didn’t do much either) which, to me, indicates that the Chiefs didn’t get the ball to any WR not named Bowe all year.

We would have been kidding ourselves to expect 1000 yd receiving/ 1000 yd rushing from a guy like McCluster in his first year, given how this offense performed.

It's all about the gameplan

by stagdsp on Jan 20, 2011 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

Its not hard to get 1000 total yards including kick returns

Dexter thus far has been a complete bust. He went from the most hyped up rookie over the offseason to the most irrelevant in the regular season. I hate the way he plays, I hate how high we drafted him, and I hate the fact we are forced to pass up on several free agents and draft picks that could be elite slot receivers because we already paid for Dexter McNogain.

I hated the pick draft day, I hate it now. Dex seems like a nice person, but hes a better singer than football player. I hope he can prove me wrong

by Enite on Jan 19, 2011 7:35 AM CST reply actions

Why people are hard on TJAX

He was picked 3rd in the draft but yet is sittign behind one of 22 guys of the street (Shaun Smith). If TJax needs several years to develop then he should have never been taken #3. The Chiefs could have gotten a plate of ribs from Gates and done better than TJackass. He has Ryan Sims written all over him. Guys picked this high should be immediate impact (see Eric Berry for example).

At a minimum he should be average starter, hes not. Shaun Smith was brought here to rotate at NT with Ron Edwards and a fresh NT would have made our defense a whole lot better along with an average DE. Instead Smith had to man the DE as TJackass was either injured or really doesn’t get it, thus leaving Edwards worn out and exposed. Look at Wallace Gilberry too for a guy who contributes far more in relation to what we spent in draft picks and $$$ to get him.

I liked our 2010 drafts except for the second round picks.

I was against the Dexter and Arenas picks in the second round. You should be able to get a punt/kickoff returner in the late rounds. We should have picked either another safety, WR, DT, OT, or a rush LB in the second round. They could have picked up Nate Allen, Brandon Spikes, Terrence Cody, Golden Tate,

Someone needs to post a pic of Cody and a pic of Jackson for you. Not even close.

Not to mention Jackson had a much better year than Cody…

But hey, we lost, so I guess that means Cody is more of a winner than anyone on the Chiefs :)
