Trading anyone is a moot question as of now because of the status regarding the CBA. If you haven't saw it yet a nice synopsis is over at Pro Football Talk and I suggest it's a worthwhile look see. Scroll down to January 12, I believe. Some big hairy Gremlins hanging onto both parties. I think the pressure from the TV Networks will be immense and a deal is done. If so, then a few trades may happen. One such scenario is been pulling at me for awhile.
Brian Waters made the Pro Bowl yet again, and some value may be had now in a trade scenario. The reason I look at the Patriots is, other than the obvious connections between Pioli and Coach B in NE, is a need for both teams. NE has a plethora of second round picks and we could use another. NE has 2 starters on the left side of their offensive line in flux. Matt Light, the LT, is at a questionable junction in his career, and the dollars commanded by LT is a huge piece of the pie, so I expect NE to draft one early. They have 2 # 1's.
Logan Mankins is pissed at management for not playing straight with him and will not return if he can help it. So NE would need a starting LG. Now if you have a new rookie LT protecting Brady's back side, it would be a disaster in the making to have a rookie LG paired with the rookie LT. Enter Waters, a pro bowler who can help mentor the new rookie LT while filling in at LG spot that was Mankins. He would surely be an asset in helping a rookie guard learn the pro game too.
Into this mix we have last years third rounder, who learned much this year and is most likely ready to step in and start. Coach Muir, who deserves a great big "Attaboy" for his work this season, Waters and game experience has given Jon A enough to step into the starting role without a huge drop off in line play. We still need to fix our o-line and an additional second rounder would be beneficial towards that goal.
I am a big Logan Mankins fan and think we should sign him. Not as a guard, but as our RT. I keep thinking that he played well at LT when Light was injured and believe he could start for us at RT. Not only start but excel which would fix most of the line headaches on the Chief's. Yes the center spot needs help but with a second, round 2 pick, we should be able to find a fix and it would take a primary need off our draft board not having to take a tackle.
Penciling in Mankins at RT is a reach since he does not have experience there, but I am convinced he could step up to the challenge and help our Chief's at a spot we need. I do not think his skirmish with management is a detriment if he comes here. Pioli knows him well and may have an inside track for his services. Anyway, Go Chief's!!
