Chiefs Sign Seven To Future Contracts

Now that the season is over the Kansas City Chiefs have signed seven players to reserve/future contracts, according to Adam Caplan of FOX Sports.

The lucky seven: WR Jeremy Horne; TE Cody Slate; G Darryl Harris; DL Bobby Greenwood; LB Pierre Walters; LB Micah Johnson; and LB Justin Cole.

Dion Gales was the only member of the practice squad not to re-sign at this point, Caplan reports.

I like Micah Johnson - I hope he works his way onto the field

He was a force in college and has great LB size (6’2", 252 lbs). I’d like to see what he’s capable of doing in the NFL.

I think he has a

ton of upside also……I’m anxious to see what happens with him when he gets into the mix in training camp.

I was mad as $#%@ when we drafted Dexter McCluster and now I'm ordering his jersey......oh the irony! Go Chiefs!

I was thinking the same.

He was the name I was most excited about from the list. I liked him a lot coming out of college if he could just stay healthy.

Yeah he was one of the later round LB's i was hoping we would look at in last years draft.

If they would just listen to me it would make this process so much easier. Here some video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc7RoALOZfM

I think some of them have to make the team or get cut outright

Walters has been on our practice squad for two years, as had Gales. My understanding is that a player cannot be on the same team’s practice squad for more than two years.

Bobby G. is a Pioli and Haley guy!

You cannot find a harder worker or better character guy! He loves to play football and is working his butt off to make it as an OT! I know Bobby personally and he will make this team, they have him listed at 278 but I saw him a while back and he is closer to 290-295 and fit as Haley likes his OL to be! He also has the athleticism and long arms you like to see with OTs. Hopefully he comes on strong this offseason and forces Albert or Richardson inside to guard and Asomoah can take over at C. Also, he is the ONLY player the last two years from the PS that has never been cut or released!

by hotrodchevy1980 on Jan 13, 2011 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

that sounds awesome and hope he can be a major contributor like that

but, the PS is available for the pickings of all the teams out there and nobody has taken him. So…makes one wonder.

Studebaker's contract

Slots him as a reserve.

I think OLB opposite Tamba is still a big need. First 3 picks in the draft…possibly. That or FA.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

we'll see

Just because Stude’s contract isn’t big, doesnt’ mean he won’t start
could just mean they locked him up before he could command a higher salary

I agree in principle

I was responding to:

I think the signing of Studebaker last year pretty much means that we won’t draft high for this possition.

I don’t think the two are very related.

I think Stude’s talent level means he won’t start. Or if he does, it means we have failed this offseason. We have to get better at that position this offseason.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 10:24 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Failed this offseason....

I disagree…If we don’t find a way to fix our Oline and WR’s then this offseason will be a failure….I would be very surprised to see very many different starters on defense. I hope for a NT and quality depth but another year in Crennel’s system and this defense is very capable. Locking Hali up long term should be the focus of defense for the offseason. You also have to remember Studebaker and Belcher were both UDFA’s….both of them improved 10 fold from the start of the season. I think you would be surprised how much they mature after another training camp. Remember we can’t have Pro Bowlers at every position.

by groundedchevy on Jan 12, 2011 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

I don't expect a pro bowler at every postition

I expect to upgrade what was our worst position on defense this season.

I think it is a mistake to expect to get much better just by eliminating Vrabel. If they thought Stude was much better than Vrabel, he would’ve been playing more this season.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 10:35 AM CST up reply actions

I also would be very surprised to find more than 2 new starters on defense.

the only way I’d call the offseason a “failure” is if they let Hali and Carr walk and have a bad draft.

It's all about the gameplan

by stagdsp on Jan 12, 2011 10:38 AM CST up reply actions

That would be an epic failure

I don’t see any way they let Hali walk, unless something crazy happens with the CBA.

I guess Carr could walk, if they find an upgrade…that doesn’t seem real likely.

Two new starters sounds about right. Maybe 3. If it’s two, it’ll be OLB and probably NT.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 10:41 AM CST up reply actions

agreed

It's all about the gameplan

by stagdsp on Jan 12, 2011 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

I think it could be 4

depending on if we make a serious play for Asamugha; 5. I can see us filling the needs at OLB, NT and then moving to replace Belcher and possibly Lewis or creating new nickel/dime safety.

So:
1. OLB
2. NT
3. ILB
4. FS or nickel/dime S
5. Making a move on Asamugha (this may counter-act #4 by moving Carr to the nickel or dime position unless he, in some weird turn wants #1 money and we send him packing.)

by SCKSChief on Jan 12, 2011 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see Pioli spending the $$ that Asomugha will command.

by groundedchevy on Jan 12, 2011 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

He's 29.

I don’t see us grabbing him either.

I would love it, personally especially if the deal could be structured (as almost all are in the NFL) where we could bail after about 3 years.

Gonna be awhile before he gets signed, CBA has to get done first.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

Carr....

I worry about him…It depends if he wants paid #2 money or #1 money…If he wants #1 I think we might be looking at disappointment.

by groundedchevy on Jan 12, 2011 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

If he asks for #1 money

He’s got some bad representation. He won’t get that on the open market.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

I really like the studebaker contract but the key is belcher, and D.williams..if the team is happy with both, we wont be as pressed to go LB

but with rumors of Kc looking at LB’s for the draft, it may happen

however I have a theory that sheffield will be a big part of nickel packages etc next year.

lets just hope Hali is the next signing…I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 5 year window created by pioli…so now its time to continue to signings to fit that window…Hali, Carr…NOW….S.Smith as well…

by groundedchevy on Jan 12, 2011 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

I sure hope so

Linebackers are critical in a 34 and Belcher and Vrabel are not starting LBs in the NFL. I can understand seeing what Studebaker or Sheffield have at OLB but we need another inside LBer.

Belcher is good depth, but that’s about it.

I disagree that those guys are not starting LB

But, I would look for another ILB…maybe he’s already on the roster, but I’m betting he won’t be a high draft pick

by stagdsp on Jan 12, 2011 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

I agree here

If it isn’t Belcher it will be someone else that steps up not a high draft pick….maybe the Canadian guy can make an impact….with too many needs on offense I highly doubt defense gets the first 3 picks unless there is a complete stud that falls to us.

by groundedchevy on Jan 12, 2011 10:33 AM CST up reply actions

We were #14 in total defense
  1. in total offense.

I agree we have some glaring holes on offense, but let’s not act like the defense is where it needs to be.

Depending on what the plan is in FA, nothing would surprise me with the first 3 picks. We may go two on D and one on O.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

Youth plays a big role IMO

Most of our defense is very young. Minus Vrabel and Edwards…with that said I believe Vrabel will retire and I don’t think Studebaker is a downgrade from Vrabel. With a defense as young as we have I imagine you will see improvement from experience. If we look at the offensive side of the ball we have a C and LG that are close to retirement. We have no real solution at RT unless Richardson develops (he is young too). We don’t have a C under contract since Rudy and Casey’s contract expires this year. Jon might be able to take Brian’s spot or maybe he will be our future C. Wide receiver is a huge hole minus Bowe. We have no TE after Moeki (especially if Pope isn’t resigned)…Thomas Jones isn’t getting any younger. I’d be surprised if the first round pick wasn’t an Olineman or a Wide Receiver.

But with our TE depth chart, I suppose it’s possible.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not questioning the holes on O

I’m pointing out there are serious holes on D.

Vrabel I’m assuming is gone, and if he’s back, has to be back in a backup roll.

Edwards also, if back, should be a backup. I would be really surprised if we didn’t address at least one of those two positions, or the defense in general, with the first 3 picks.

Then again, I never would’ve thought we would take a slot WR/RB/KR with our #2 last year…so…who knows.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

I hear ya...

Just a numbers game in my head….We need 2-3 (NT, OLB, ILB) and 5 (C, LG, RT, WR, FB) and this doesn’t include depth. Which one could argue we need just as much defensive depth. More or less I just want an Oline for Christmas and a wide receiver that can separate. I watch other teams and their WR’s are always more open than ours. Tucker did show promise for an UDFA, and maybe Mccluster polishes up his route running better his 2nd year. I don’t excpect Mccluster to be a huge receiving threat until his third year. We have to remember he was a RB in college.

by groundedchevy on Jan 12, 2011 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

WR do take more time.

I think Tucker replaces Copper going forward and it didn’t help McCluster either that his role didn’t seem to be defined and Weis clearly showed he had no idea what to do with him. I’d love to see a WR too. Ideally an earlier pick and a free agent slot guy like Steve Smith(the other one) or Lance Moore. Bowe/Moore/Draftee/McCluster/Tucker would be much better.

by Tarkus on Jan 12, 2011 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

Ehh...

An agreement has to get done for there to be football. Period.

It’s a nice thing to be able to tell the media, but the current CBA is up. It was actually up before this season, and they had rules in place to continue it for a season if an agreement wasn’t finalized before this year, hence the uncapped year.

It’s not an honest argument by the players to claim that it’s all the owners keeping FB from happening.

I blame both sides equally at this point. I reserve the right to change my opinion as more details/demands come out.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 1:36 PM CST up reply actions

The CBA was up before the season, only because the owners opted out.

And it is an honest argument by the players, because the players have always been willing to extend the previous CBA. Why do you think there are lockouts and strikes, if you think there’s no difference between the two? Why isn’t it always a lockout or always a strike?

YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!

by Tarkus on Jan 12, 2011 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Well...

As you said, they exercised a provision in the previous CBA. That was known by both sides when the last CBA was agreed too. ‘Tearing it up’ I think is unfair. They didn’t do anything which wasn’t within their rights.

From your point of view, any side which has ever sought change is wrong, so the players were wrong to want free agency in ’87 or whatever year it was? Not wanting to stick with the current system is always wrong? Do you like the current rookie salary structure?

I do recognize there is a difference between a lockout and a strike, I just think, in this case you have no agreement, so it is different than in previous strikes/lockouts.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

I never said they didn't have a right to opt out.

Nor did I ever say that any side that wants more is wrong.

What I said was, it’s the owners threatening a work stoppage, not the players. If you think the owners are correct in their demands, that’s perfectly fine. But that doesn’t change the fact that they are the ones threatening a work stoppage.

YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!

by Tarkus on Jan 12, 2011 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

They also have the option...

of continuing under the previous agreement (the players would be happy to put off a new CBA). Yes, at some point a new agreement needs to be reached, but only one side does not want to play ball (literally).

YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!

by Tarkus on Jan 12, 2011 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

There were several poison pills

For lack of a better term built into the CBA which basically forces the sides to come to an agreement this offseason if one side opted out in ’08.

As ‘different’ as this last season’s rules were, they would be even more convoluted if moving forward under the existing structure.

And really, I’m not sure the players would go for it if the owners weren’t talking lockout anyway. What happened this season was players from 4-6 years in the league got screwed while rookie contracts continued to rise. The rules get even stranger if they kept going, which is why I’ve read a couple places (PFT, I’m sure was one) that in actuality, it doesn’t make sense for either side to continue with the current deal.

It’s easy to say, ‘hey, we’re willing to play ball’ when you know an agreement needs to get done and the owners have already thrown out lockout as a possibility.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

As did the players

When they built them into the original agreement, and gave both sides the ability to opt out.

Just saying.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 2:29 PM CST up reply actions

Right.

And they didn’t want a work stoppage, so they didn’t opt out. Geez.

Again, if you want to side with the owners, fine. Just don’t pretend they’re not primarily responsible for a possible work stoppage, even if you agree with their position.

YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!

I don't

I see them equally to blame at this point.

If both sides would’ve wanted extended labor peace, there wouldn’t have been an opt out built in to the last agreement. See my genius (and admittedly somewhat flawed) example below.

If these guys come to an agreement this offseason and build in an opt out for 2014, and the players opt out, I feel the same way then if they opt out.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

Then we'll have to agree to disagree.

One side opted out. One side is threatening work stoppage. But if you think that makes both sides equally responsible for a potential work stoppage, then I have nothing else to say.

YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!

by Tarkus on Jan 12, 2011 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

Well

Of course not. That’s not why I think they are both equally responsible. But that’s fine, we can disagree.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

Here's another way to look at it.

Let’s say we were playing a game of…whatever, Madden, and building the rules.

In the rules, we gave each of us the ability to hit the reset button once during the game as long as it was done by halftime.

If either one of us hit it, we would then be faced with a set of new, strange rules in the 3rd and 4th Q that neither of us liked and when the 4th Q was done, we would both dislike the game enough that we would need to work out new rules before playing again.

We both agreed to build in the reset button, so if we don’t like that option (which you don’t seem to) the blame needs to be placed on both sides who negotiated it in back in the last CBA. You can’t blame me for hitting it when you were up 14-3 off of that bogus flea-flicker trick play :)

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

Also...

As this points out.

The owners may not necessarily lock the players out.

I think they will, and again, i think it doesn’t really matter, b/c both sides will have to come to an agreement, one way or another before anyone plays football. Which was my original point.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

This is incorrect, Tark

The owners aren’t ‘tearing up the old agreement’ the agreement is up.

Both sides are asking for things. You are probably referring to some quotes, I know one from Jeff Saturday that said, essentially, “we’ll show up and play, if we don’t have football, it’s the owners fault.” Again, since there is going to be a lockout, that is technically true, but no 3rd party that I have read that has looked at the situation has said that it is feasible to move forward, for either side without an agreement.

by kcsno56 on Jan 12, 2011 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Wrong.

The owners tore up (or at least opted out of) the agreement last year. That’s why 2010 was played without a CBA in place. Either side had the option to opt out. The owners — not the players — chose to do so.

And the only things the players are asking for is compensation for what the owners want, such as the 18 game schedule and a rookie wage scale. If the players are “asking for things,” why would they agree to show up and play football, by your own quote? The reason is, they’re content with the way things are, when the NFL is more popular than ever.

Come on Pioli

Dion Gales has worked his tail off on the practice squad the last two seasons. He was even called up to the 53 late last season.
He has learned the defense and is a monster of a man.

Don’t let him pass along….it would be a big waste of talent.

"Nobody scares us," Dion Gales said. "Where I’m from, it ain’t how big or small a man is, it’s the size of the fight in them.

"I’ll be doggone if I let another man beat me, that’s just my attitude. I’m not scared of another man."

Nope

But I’ll tell u who is….

Reginald Jackson of SMWW

Also, I represent defensive end Dion Gales in 2009 (undrafted free agent), who sign a three year NFL contract with Kansas City Chiefs. Dion Gales played his college days at Troy University. Dion Gales was brought up from the practice squad in 12/09 played in the last four game of the season. Looking for big things from Dion Gales in 2010 season with Kansas City Chiefs.

If the Chiefs are undervaluing him...

You should be hoping that he’ll leave as a free agent, so he can show his talents to the other 31 teams.

Oh yeah i forgot about him.

If i remember right he’s built like a stump, do you remember his height and weight?

Well

I think he is listed at like 6’4 305 or something like that. He looks more like 325.
He is massive!

Don't think they can keep him around

Gales has been on our practice squad for two years, which is the max time a player can be on one team’s PS. He either has to make the 53-man roster or go his own way. I’m not sure how they are planning to overcome that with Walters; he’s also been here for two years.

by Chiefs4Life on Jan 12, 2011 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

True

In my opinion Gales should have been on 53 all season. Especially in that bum TJ’s spot. I want Gales to excel in KC but if he has to go I hope he finds a great situation that can truly let him blossom into a great DL that I know he can be.

Bum?

When he’s been dealing with injuries srsly?

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 12, 2011 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

hey guys

what exactly does “future contract” mean here?

Sign Shaun Smith.

by kabrink on Jan 12, 2011 2:45 PM CST reply actions

Exactly, I'm not sure

But it is for people who were not on anyone’s active roster. Can also be people on practice squad or not in the league.

I think it is called ‘future contract’ because the season ‘year’ doesn’t start, typically until March (this year, not until after the CBA is done).

So it’s basically saying, we hold their rights whenever the new year starts.
