Matt Cassel On Ravens Game, Dwayne Bowe And Charlie Weis Replacement
Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel talked with Soren Petro on 810 WHB's The Program on Monday morning for a little over 20 minutes going over the loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Dwayne Bowe's performance and the next offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.
Listen to the full interview at 810WHB.com. Here are a couple of highlights:
Dwayne Bowe with no catches against the Ravens. Cassel indicated Bowe's lack of production had more to do with the Ravens than the Chiefs game plan. He said Bowe was the number one target on four of the first five passes of the game (which was actually the entire first half) but they had a cornerback in his face and a safety help. He said the Ravens were cheating to Bowe's side to take him out of the game. Apparently it worked. "It's always tough when you have a guy that's that talented and had so much success throughout the year because we obviously wanted to give him the ball."
Picking the next offensive coordinator. "I'd absolutely like to have a say in what's going on," Cassel said of finding the Chiefs next offensive coordinator, "but then again it's not always up to me and this actually isn't up to me at all." Cassel said he trusts GM Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley will find someone.
Cassel says he'll take a few weeks to regroup and let his body heal before starting to get ready for the next season. In the meantime, we'll be waiting on news about the Chiefs next offensive coordinator.

Should've asked him...
If you knew Bowe was double teamed and the other safety was on Moeaki or shadowing Charles out of the backfield all day why didn’t you look to Kevin Curtis more often when he was open for the entire afternoon? Not Matts best game but he showed enough this year that he can do it. Just needs more consistency from the oline and he needs more consistency with his confidence.

Should've...
I think these comments tell us tons about one of our primary needs this off season; a
WR. By the way, Curtis had only been with the team for less than a week, I doubt he had much of the offense. Tucker is another matter, tho. What about Copper?
Tucker had a pretty amazing grab as he was pushed out of bounds...
I really like what he has as hands… Kevin Curtis was seen multiple times being told where to go, and was being stared down by Matt Cassel. During this game Cassel was staring down EVERY WR that he was going to go to… hence why he ended up with 3 interceptions. After the 2nd one I was ready for Croyle (really I wanted Palko, but he was inactive) to come in…
I believe with a good off season Kevin Curtis is going to be a nice addition to the Chiefs. I’ve seen enough at the QB position this year… Cassel has been great at times, but to often he falls back to these old ways. If a solid QB falls to us I hope that we decide to grab a hold of him. I hope that next year is Cassel’s last in Kansas City (then again hopefully I’ll eat crow for that comment). I think that we need to develop someone.
Go Chiefs!!!!
What I Don't Get...
is that they put Chambers on IR. Why start Curtis in a game that matters most? What I mean is, there was no chemistry between he and Cassel. At least Chambers has been here for well over a year and throughout the entire season. Well, most of it anyway. He knows the routes better and can get a sense for what Cassel is thinking. I was just dumbfounded by this move, as well as limiting Charles and not getting the ball to Bowe. When you have huge playmakers, you get them the ball at all costs. I saw Bowe open on more than one play and I was at the game…
2010 Chiefs are on the rise. This is the most excited I've been since 'Nam...

He never even looked Bowe's way...
If he did it was because Curtis was on that side. There were NO checking down the recievers… he knew he was passing to so and so when the ball was snapped. Purely aweful execution.
Go Chiefs!!!!
damn
he’s famous now :-)

Like you need anymore fame! Off topic they said D-Bo and Whitlock are going at it w Bob Fescoe on twitter….anyone follow twitter?
I'm sorry, but
Great WRs don’t completely vanish at the most critical times. They find a way to make an impact. If Bowe was doubled the whole game, then someone should have been wide open. I hope we can get an IMPACT WR in the off-season. And I don’t mean a Chris Chambers type of guy either. On that note I also question the Curtis move this week. I never thought it was a great idea to bring in someone with no timing with our QB.

why blame Bowe for being covered? he didn't fail to throw himself the ball ... did he?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I'm not blaming him for being covered.
I guess I expect more from a guy that size. If Larry Fitzgerald or any of the other big, elite WRs had been doubled like that, I guarantee you they would have found a way to get a catch in the most critical game of their career. It may speak more to the confidence that Cassel has in him to make a play in coverage.

that's one thing I've been saying ... credit the Ravens for some damned good defense all around

Sorry to disagree....
….but Bowe needs to get open. Roddy White is double-teamed every play and he would NEVER have a 0 catch game. Revis was on Reggie Wayne and he even had a catch. Matt Cassel even said that Bowe was the first read on 4 of the first 5 passing attempts (which was about the whole first half I think). So, that is on BOWE…who is supposed to be a stud WR.
Yes…give the Ravens credit for playing strong D and for beating our team. But, we have to recognize our shortcomings as well. Bowe proved that he cannot be counted on in the biggest game of his career. It is obvious we need a real #1 WR so that Bowe can match up against #2 CBs.
If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

Matt Cassel had very little time to let a play develope and/or allow a WR to get open.
Against front pressure like that AND double coverage it had to be difficult for Bowe to shake loose.
And even if he had opened up, I’m not sure Cassel could hit him. Matt lookes rattled by the pressure.
That said, he or the OC needed to to get the ball in Bowe’s hands SOME how some way. End around etc…
Cornstar!
I agree with that as well
….Cassel needs to step it up as well as Bowe. After that game, every team now has a blueprint to route our team. We have a lot of work to do and players to acquire in the offseason to have a real chance at a playoff win.
If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

Sorry it wasn't that Bowe was or wasn't open...
As Matt said… he saw that Bowe was ‘double teamed’ before the snap and decided he wasn’t going to throw the ball to him. Matt didn’t even try to get Bowe involved in this game… very poor showing by Matt Cassel in this game.
Go Chiefs!!!!
AFC West has lost 2 HC's, and two Coordinators
The sterner the discipline, the greater the devotion.
I was hoping Hue Jackson would get set up somewhere other than Oakland though
Looks like he might be on his way to the big chair there.
The sterner the discipline, the greater the devotion.
True.
That would have been funny as hell if Cable got fired to make room for him, only to see him go elsewhere.
YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!
its what i was secretly hoping for
A guy I work with is a Raiders fan though…I actually got him signed up at SABP. Although he keeps asking me why they’re always so negative. :)

good chance
not a good week for them. could be a mutiny on their hands.
The sterner the discipline, the greater the devotion.
Will get funnier when Greg Olsen becomes the new coach of the Donkeys.
And we watch as Denver has to totally rebuild their defense back to 4-3 personel.

Wonder how long Turner will be around
Why hasn’t Shelmon been tossed around as prospect elsewhere?
word is..
that haley took over calling plays in the 2nd half, and that they changed the whole gameplan at halftime. charles: 2 carries in the 2nd half and 9 total. I think Haley had better be careful doing this stuff or he will lose that locker room if things go south the way they did. Can any offensive coordinator coexist with him? I sure hope so…
Just like novocaine. give it time; always works..
The greater the fall, the grander the ascention..
We've been discussing this all morning...may or may not be true

Stop it. I promised to limit my comment to football.......... :-)
What do you think of OT 1st round – maybe Nate Solder?
Aldon Smith! Blaine Gabbert!
No, nobody? :-)
Seriously though, my thoughts on draft/FA needs –
LT – Albert just isn’t cutting it in pass protection. Either needs to move back inside or to RT. Perhaps a move to RG and Asamoah to C?
Receiver – We need a solid #2 guy behind Bowe
MLB – Need more speed and skills than Belcher can provide.
LOLB – Vrabel is a warrior, but he’s old and slow
Depth at Safety – Jon McGraw just isn’t very good in coverage… need another coverage safety
What do you think?
by u2nspenserfan on Jan 10, 2011 3:40 PM CST up reply actions
Agree with most
LT was my thought with Solder. casey out and move everyone to the right one spot.
Would substitute WR and maybe NT with the safety depth. With Legget coming back I’m okay with our secondary.
Draft or FA – I agree with all the needs.
We need reinforcements on the front line.
What do you think of OT 1st round – maybe Nate Solder?
YAAAAAY! Now you go, lady!
Most teams we play
I think our line is okay. But I think we are going to have to have some monsters to complete with SD and Oakland.
I nominate you for the front line
it pays well … go out there and take one for the team!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I was so impressed with Matt this season... until these last 2 games
It’s not even the numbers… it’s the way he played. Inaccurate passes, slow getting the ball out, bad decisions… again and again these last two weeks. The thing that impressed me about him earlier this season is that even if he wasn’t throwing the ball accurately, he seemed to recognize and adjust his mentality based on that. In so doing, he limited turnovers and left his teammates a shot to win the game. These last two weeks has been a regression to last season’s deer-in-the-headlights performances… when he turned the ball over left and right.
I will grant you that if Weis truly had playcalling taken away by Haley in this game, that explains some of it – I thought his playcalling was awful last year. I hope a new o-coordinator will help.
I think we’ve found out what Cassel is though – he’s Flacco with less arm and less upside. I don’t hate that, but it means we need to be very solid everywhere else to go to the next level.
At the beginning of the season, I said – anything under 6 wins is disappointing, 8-8 makes me happy, and the playoffs would be exceeding expectations. I hope this is a stepping stone to a consistently strong team. When do we start talking about the draft? :-)
That's true..
I chalked those up to a new coordinator and a new system. The way he played until these last 2 weeks seemed to bear that out. I have to wonder a little now if the confidence and attitude he played with through a lot of the season came from Weis and if it was shaken when he announced he was gone… I don’t want to think that, but we’ll see.

I thought the same thing.
Not looking forward to OC #4 and the excuses it will bring at the start of next year.
I'm really torn on the issue
We need stability at QB, but I’m not sure he’s going to be the long term answer. We can’t afford 2 steps forward 1 step back. The team is going to mature to its prime over the next couple of years. We need the QB to be right there with em. I hope Cassel continues to improve cause I think we’re married to him for better or worse.

I think he is our guy next year
We need to improve O-line and WR before we can really judge him correctly. I don’t think we bring in a young guy unless we see someone in later round that we can develop. 2012 will be year of taking a QB
"Continues to improve..."
I think that’s the key right there Grid Iron. Cassel is getting better. Heck, your whole team is getting better and they’re very young. I think that bodes well for the future of the franchise. Didn’t you guys go 4-12 last year? As much as I’m sure the loss still hurts, that season was an amazing improvement. Try to be happy about that…:)
I don’t think Cassel is great, but he is really good and I don’t think he is really holding you back. I’d bet he continues to improves along with everyone else.

Thanks papa lighteningbolt fish!
Well said. I would rather have Crymea Rivers but we could do alot worse. I imagine things are even more critical on the chargers board where it looks like you need to draft a head coach.
