The Kansas City Chiefs are my team. They have been since I was 5 years old, and they will be until I'm six feet under. The last three years were brutal, but I never turned my back. After yesterday, and their 30-7 defeat, I couldn't be prouder of the team I root for.
This team never quit, and I have immense pride in being a fan of a team like that. That trait alone will bring them to loftier places, because teams that refuse to lose do exactly that once they have the proper amount of talent in place. This team is still rebuilding. They still need another WR or two, an OLB, and a NT in my eyes. They also need a younger center and some depth pieces for sure.
With all that being said, how many teams make the playoffs in year two of a rebuilding phase? Virtually none. I don't want to hear about the schedule, because last season we couldn't even beat bad teams at home. This year we crushed many of them on the way to 10 wins. That shows massive improvement. You need to be realistic and take it one step at a time. I can't believe I say a fanpost yesterday calling for Haley to be fired. That's flat out embarrassing. Coach Haley took this team from the bowels of Hell into the playoffs with two years.
One stat I'll never forget, Haley got rid of 33 out of the 53 players on our roster when he got here, and only 4 stuck elsewhere. That's incredible. It shows how God awful the team was, and in two years he transformed that mess into a playoff team. I know he had plenty of help with the likes of Crennel, Weis, Pioli, and the other coaches, but at the end of the day the Head Coach gets the blame and the credit. He deserves an ovation.
Is this team perfect yet? Absolutely not, far from it. It has weaknesses that Oakland an Baltimore exposed, but that's okay. A few years ago we were literally at the bottom of the mountain with almost no players to build on. We have so much hope now, we're not that far away.
In closing, January 9, 2011 may mark an end in your eyes. To me, it makes a beginning. It was the first playoff game for an extremely young team. It was the first of many to come. This season is over on the field, but in the long run it's all just beginning. This team is hungry, talented and good, and for that I'm already ripe for training camp. At the end of the day, I've had so much fun watching this team, and I can't wait to watch some more. I couldn't be prouder of my boys in red...
