Sounds Like WR David Clowney Is Visiting The Chiefs

Photo

I was watching Hard Knocks with the New York Jets on Wednesday evening and towards the end of the show WR David Clowney was released (actually happened on Sept. 5).

An hour after the show, we saw this tweet come from Clowney's Twitter account:

God is so good,.. 8am Flight to Kansas City.

Now, he could be coming to Kansas City for any reason but my guess would be that he's visiting the Chiefs.

The words "God is so good" indicates that he's happy about something. He's currently unemployed so he would probably be happy if he were going to Kansas City in search of a job.

Clowney is not a vested veteran so the Chiefs wouldn't have to wait until after week one to sign him in order to avoid guaranteeing his entire salary. The Chiefs are currently carrying five receivers (two are practice squad eligible) and two more on the practice squad.

This is unconfirmed for now. We'll see if this tweet means he's visiting Kansas City.

Mike Lombardi said he could immediately upgrade our WR rotation

Anyone know anything about him? I haven’t watched any of the hard knocks.

by cpa913 on Sep 9, 2010 9:09 AM CDT reply actions

His experience is certainly a plus over Horne

Drafted 2007. He is not huge (6’0", 188lbs), but he appears to be pretty damn fast (ran a 4.37 40 at the combine). Not too much game footage on him, he has only seen some limited action the last couple of years. I like what I’ve seen, I think he could improve our recieving core.

If he can play ST, I would drop Copper

Horne made some nice plays in the pre-season to just simply overlook.

Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

I've heard that he's not that great on ST

Which is one of the determining reasons in why they cut him.

Yeah I saw that discussion on Hard Knocks to, but

I also remember hearing Coach Ryan asking Brian Schottenhiemer if he would use him in the first weeks of the season, and Brian said not.
But the Jets have a few already established targets playing WR for them, unlike us. I say sign him and let him compete with Horne, and let the the better WR take the field.
Just give them some time to develop. Copper is already a 7 yr veteran he’s most likely as good as he’s going to get.

I think...

he is out of VT…I am going to google it now to make sure…

Yeah, he was a teammate of Brandon Flowers

Guys on 810 this morning were saying hes a deep threat who’s young with a ton of upside. I could definitely see him supplanting Terrance Copper.

Another player from VA

It’s been awhile (drafted in 2007) but what I remember from his college days is speed. This guy was fast. I don’t remember him doing much of anything else but going deep and being under-thrown by Sean Glennon.

I don’t think he translates too well to the special teams and that is a problem when trying to find room for him on this roster. I am all for taking a good look at him. GO VA!

awesome...

I post on several sites with this username and all my friends say I am the only KC fan they have ever meet. I am from Botetourt County but that is only 10 minutes from Roanoke, which you have actually heard of.

You want to keep my company on my drive to KC this weekend for the game? Serious question…

by OnlyKCFanNVA on Sep 9, 2010 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Roanoke is nice -- love the hills!

Wish I was going to KC for the game, but I’m not. Last game I went to was the Cleveland game (not the best time to see them) near Christmas time last year. My Sister lives in Overland Park. She thinks that I came out there to visit her for Christmas, but I was really only there to see the Chiefs game. Shhh, don’t tell her! Be safe driving!

I thought I was the only Chiefs fan in the state. haha Kind of hard to meet up with a bunch of KC fans when they are so few and in between.

Chiefs fans in VA?

I dunno, I don’t see too many Chiefs fans in Hampton Roads, VA. There’s one guy who works at a Wal-Mart here who wears a Chiefs hat all the time. I asked him about it a couple of years ago & he said that someone gave him the hat — then, he said “Chiefs suck!” I couldn’t really disagree with him back then, but saw him again this past weekend & he gave me a thumbs-up. That’s a good sign, right?

Saw your other post and was hoping others in the area would respond. I usually go to Jillians at Waterside, which is closing. Will probably go to AJ Gators at Chesapeake Square now, though the Steelers fans there are really annoying!

A few of us would always find each other at A.J. Gator’s in downtown Norfolk, but that was years ago. A waitress there grew up a few minutes from where I did just outside St. Joe. Everywhere I’ve lived, there were always at least a few Chiefs fans that seemed to find each other at the sports bar…

by OnlyKCFanNVA on Sep 9, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Career Stats

15 total receptions & 1 TD in 2 years with NYJ. Not sure why some think he’s an upgrade. Seems very suspicious & subjective…

I like his speed, but I think we have that in Horne already. Not sure where he fits in right now…

by OnlyKCFanNVA on Sep 9, 2010 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Come on Joel!

Two are eligilble for the practice squad but one would never be put there (McCluster) and the other shouldn’t be (Horne). In all honesty I know he may be an upgrade receiver wise over Copper but I’d really like to see Horne get a chance to develop and the best way for that is to give him playing time.

by Bsketbal52 on Sep 9, 2010 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions

If they add him, I think they cut Copper and they could always bring him back after game one. I don’t think they’ll expose Horn to the waiver wire.

by wildcatmo on Sep 9, 2010 9:31 AM CDT reply actions

honestly, as much as we see promise in Horne

he could pass through waivers pretty easy

Ran a 4.33 in college

Was a sprinter on track if that tells you anything.

We could possibly be one of the faster offenses in the NFL…..

Speed kills but as we have watched with Al Davis, it’s definately not the most important aspect to winning games.

"One of the teams asked me a running back question," McCluster said. "They said when you have the ball, do you focus on the guy who's in front of you or the next guy.

Coming out of college

they compared him with Eddie Kennison. He just has not put it all on the field yet. If he does we have a really good pickup. He catches the ball good and he can get separation.

He has good potential and

He’s very fast…When he had a chance to play last year because of injuries he made the best of his opportunity but I think there was just too much competition in New York for him. I would be excited to have this guy in the lineup.

He started against Miami (4 receptions 72 yards) and Oakland (4 receptions 79 yards, 1 td) last year.

by chiefs_kc_fan on Sep 9, 2010 9:44 AM CDT reply actions

Im just curious where he will line up. Apparently he is built like a slot reciever

by Big_Chief on Sep 9, 2010 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

I would think so

Dexter has the slot….

Clowney and Horne would round out the depth. Probably would rarely use him.

"One of the teams asked me a running back question," McCluster said. "They said when you have the ball, do you focus on the guy who's in front of you or the next guy.

by Matt_Grbac on Sep 9, 2010 9:49 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I think

We would use him as a flier to get deep down the field and spread out the defense a bit. He may also contribute a little at the slot as a backup to McCluster or when we need a taller receiver to go over the middle.

I would like to see our receivers as Bowe, Chambers, McCluster, Horne and Clowney. I think Clowney is an upgrade over Copper.

by chiefs_kc_fan on Sep 9, 2010 9:49 AM CDT reply actions

Man

With Chambers, Horne, Dexter, and Clowney….how could you defend them? The speed would be outta control lol

Well

We could add Clowney and not drop Copper

We have extra ILB’s and two FB’s…and three TE’s….

WR Bowe, Chambers, Horne, Copper, Clowney
OW McCluster

by stagdsp on Sep 9, 2010 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

No way we drop a TE

With Tony M’s injury history, the Chiefs have to have a reserve TE ready to play in the game. I also doubt we drop an FB since one injury would seriously limit the playbook. I think it more likely that they’d drop a WR or a DB to bring in Clowney, with Copper being the most likely. So they’ll have to decide if he’s a big upgrade over Copper, which will come down to not only who catches better and runs faster, but who can run block if they have to fill in for a starter.

Taking Advantage of the Suckie 4-12 Season???

I agree that the Chiefs should look at Tony Ugoh. If the Chiefs can pick up young players waived by elite teams such as a NT from the Packers, a WR from the Jets & an OT from the Colts, they should be able to trade their 2011 #1 & #2 draft choices for the Rams #1 draft choice to draft a franchice QB. I’m hoping for a 6-10 record in 2011 with the rookies & 2nd year & 3rd year players gaining a lot of great experience with out Haley blowing a gasket.

i see nothing

BUT upside with this kid. I feel like he may have been buried on the depth chart in NY & heck if he’s a cheap sign I say why not. Id be fine dumping Copper or Lawrence to snap him up. Plus can you imagine how freaking fast our offense becomes with this guy included. Finally I think he would be a nice player to help keep McCluster from being overrused.

by realdealhill27 on Sep 9, 2010 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

IF

Clowney is what we’d all like him to be. His presence on the field would be priceless to the other receivers. The safeties would have to stay back in coverage to make sure he doesn’t get behind them. That would leave the short and intermediate routes open for the what we do best. (gain yards after the catch) Bowe, DMC, and Chambers would all benefit. Even the run game would benefit (draws, screens).

by Ninjaman on Sep 9, 2010 11:55 AM CDT reply actions

i think the only questions is......

Can he catch. If he can, then the all we need to do is work on his route running proficiency and other concepts that would make him a beast!
