Chiefs vs. Chargers: Shawne Merriman May Not Play Either
When the Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers meet on Monday Night Football for the 2010 NFL season opener there will be a few stars missing for the team out west including WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeill.
That's bad enough news for QB Philip Rivers. His number one receiver and the man who protects his blindside won't be playing.
Here's another name that could be missing on Monday night: LB Shawne Merriman.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune was asked if Merriman would play and he said, "I'd bet not." That's a far cry from him being declared out but the team has been concerned about his Achilles' injury since he returned from a two-week holdout.
That said, they're hoping right now that he can play on Monday.
Merriman's definitely a big name so that would seemingly make things easier for the Chiefs. It does -- there's no mistake about that -- but Merriman has four sacks in 15 games played over the last two years so he hasn't been much of a threat for a while.
Either way, the stars continue to align for the Chiefs in this game.

I agree with NJ. You kinda want to beat their best team.
They could not show up at all and the Chiefs could play a high school team.

Good...
I haven’t liked Shawn Merriman ever since he started doing that ultra-gay sack dance…let alone steriods.

Merriman hasn't been a threat ever since MJD stood flat footed and knocked him on his ass.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.

He hasn't been a threat since he stopped eating steroid-nut cheerios for breakfast.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

what are the other stars that have aligned, besides the chargers injuries?
by DoNotAlterWalter on Sep 8, 2010 9:21 PM CDT reply actions
Oh well
He’s been almost a non factor the last few years anyways. I’d almost prefer that he did play. I think B Albert could take him pretty easily the way he has played since the steriod suspension.

I wish he was playing....
w/o the juice he’s clearly not a concern, I want no excuses when the Chiefs knock them on their arse to say “we didn’t have Merriman, VJ, or McNeil” I want them to wear it like we’ve worn ours for the past 3 years…

the flip side to that is ... we could still lose even though they don't have Merriman, Jackson or McNeill

But if they won...its because they're the Chargers?
Guess this is the easiest post-game both teams will have all year.
I wouldn't buy it
they are trying to blow smoke to hopefully throw off the game plan. I have a feeling they are getting nervous

Bad for the Chiefs that this old, bloated, overrated, tempermental, primadona won’t start. A talented backup might.

I don't know if their getting nervous
but the Chargers seem to start slow under Turner, with the injuries and absences this year I have a good feeling about this game. An early win would be huge!

Other Arenas wish they could be like Arrowhead Stadium and when rivals think they are going to be fine on an island of Flowers, they will get hit by what feels like a Carr. Ultimately, they will never be able to eat a Berry ever again.
I'm sorry but I want all their guys playing
I wish McNeil and Jackson were in there to be honest. I’d like an evaluation in the regular season on where we’re at as a team.
I hope everyone realizes that if the Chiefs do win all non-Chiefs fans will go on the McNeil/Jackson witch hunt as an excuse.

yup, and like Slappy says: if you want to BE the best you have to BEAT the best
a Chargers team weakened by injuries is NOT “the best” … in some ways it would almost be a “cheapened win” … if we win

Jackson and mcneil aren’t injured its the teams and players fault they won’t be on the field, they let go of L.t, cromartie, and their starting NT from last year, and everyone deals with injuries we have guys who are banged up to maybe not anyone major but really shawne isn’t major anymore. I’m not saying I’m gonna be riding high thinking we going to win the division just because we win, if we do which still is far from a lock. But we need wins regardless of circumstances its not like we did this stuff to the chargers and said haha now they can’t play vs us.

I hear ya but...
you have to admit it, the Chiefs are gonna have to play from behind their reputation from the last few years. They earned it unfortunately. I think we’re gonna be a spoiler by the end of the year but we’re gonna struggle early on. That being said, I want to win this game so friggin’ bad and I don’t care how much help we get. :)
