Chiefs vs. Chargers: Not Many Picking The Underdog
The Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers are the final game of the first week of the 2010 regular season.
ESPN's panel of experts have weighed in and just two pick the Chiefs to win.

Considering the two games from last year, the Chargers are the safe bet here.
Picking the Chiefs: Adam Schefter and Ron Jaworski
Picking against the Chiefs: Eric Allen, Mike Golic, Merrill Hoge, Chris Mortensen, Mark Schlereth, Seth Wickersham, AccuScore (computerized) and Pick 'Em (fans).
Get used to folks picking against the Chiefs. From an outsider's perspective, this is still a four-win team.
The Chiefs are 4.5 point underdogs on Monday Night football.

Im surprised anyone is picking the Chiefs
People must have real doubts about the Chargers with unknowns at RB and WR, and their LT position
No not really, the Chargers are notoriously slow starters in the beginning of the season before they start rolling
I could us see us winning this game, but not by much.
Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

Plus they basically had the 2nd worst run defense last year... just ahead of the Chiefs...
God typed "iddqd" before creating Jason Heyward.
I think he respects our additions of Berry, McCluster, and Arenas.
The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.
I wish Schefty never left NFLN...
I can’t stand Wyche… I can’t stand La Confora more.
But True… Adam seems to always speak highly of the Chiefs.
I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.
I take his word
Above anyone else’s when there are rumors.
If he says something is going down, about 95% of the time he’s right on, not like the rest of the jokers out there.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Michael Smith is also RIDICULOUS at busting big stories.

i think adam is a die hard chief fan
He admitted once his fav place to see a game is kc

Mark Schlereth
used to pick the Chiefs all the time too, at least in his preseason picks (not sure about his game picks).
didn't Schefter once have a KC Connection? we know Jaws did ...
respect: it has to be EARNED … the way it should be
if we win, at least play well, we’ll get our due respect from others, and if we don’t at least play well, then we don’t deserve to be highly regarded anyway … let’s see what happens and go from there

Come back, Jason!
hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
They may not be picking us now but I think we all know that will change if we beat them on MNF.
I can already see the headlines.

Heh. And I ain't bein' a homer when I say I already respected those two more than any of the others.
"I ain't lyin' 'bout nothin'."
"Oh? So what exactly are you lying about?"
That's exactly what I was going to say.
They are by far the two most knowledgeable people on that staff. Everyone else is just going by last season.

They may not be picking us to win but they are betting on us
All the money is on the chiefs this game, that line opened up at 6 i believe. All the money went on the chiefs and drove the line down to 4.5. 1.5 point drop is big, as of now, the money is on the chiefs to cover. Which scares me because usually if you bet the opposite side of where the higher percentage of the money is bet on you win.
Go Chiefs baby
can't really blame them
Key position on a football team – Quarterback
we didn’t improve the position this offseason and our starter still looks shaky
Key position on 3-4 defense – NT + linebackers
we did next to nothing to upgrade these positions over last year
big weaknesses last year
safety – upgraded 1 position with berry (maybe lewis later)
Oline = C/RG improved, OT’s the same
Pioli is a slow moving dude and the improvements are coming in small doses
when a team wins 10 games over 3 years you would think the improvements would be easier, faster and more dramatic.
so we wait …..
Change HAS been dramatic.
The one thing I want to bitch about this year is their faint attention to OT. But MAYbe, just MAYbe, they felt that Richardson was going to develop, or at least felt that one of the guys in-house (Colin Brown, Ikechuku Ndukwe, Barry Richardson) would give them upgrade. You can’t make great strides at EVERY position, and last I checked, they spent at least 6 of their draft picks on guys we fully expect will see a lot of action, and 2 or 3 that will actually make an IMPACT this year.
Besides, I think they’re getting indirect upgrade at RT with improved TE play, and blocking schemes based more on smarts (cheating?) and mobility.
Weird thing is it’s counter-MY-intuitive, because I believe so strongly in improving RBs indirectly by improving OL directly. Last year, Jamaal showed that the OL got better FAST just by adding Jamaal. So the Chiefs got HIM a backup, who’s similarly ELECTRIC with the ball, and got more talent in the slot, to boot. Just by freezing the LBs with the run threat, Jamaal bought Cassel more time to throw the ball than any two or three OL changes they might’ve made, and they DID make some significant, long-term changes with Asamoah, Lilja, and the little-expected emergence of Barry Richardson, who’s playing on par with O’Callaghan, at least, which was something I doubted until preseason.
As for Cassel, I see something a lot different from what you see. I see a vet who’s paid his dues and is close to reaping some of the rewards. Wait and see. It’s looking like at least 3 RBs are going to give Cassel a LOT more than he started ‘10 with, and there’s enough depth with those top 3 that he’s in little danger of losing those threats. Bowe looks REALLY GOOD. Chambers is looking good. The TEs are coming along.
This is a team that’s on the up-tick in NUMEROUS areas. And don’t underestimate what a DB upgrade can do for the front 7. You can already see that the LBs can pin their ears back, and NOW the DBs are allowing the LBs to be more secure in slightly less ambitious coverage duties. Even without concrete scheme change, the area that each LB has to cover is less. They mainly have to play smart, and there’s enough speed and smarts around them to make up the difference. LAST year at this time (and prob’ly later, for many), with slow safeties and young, new-to-scheme CBs, there was a lot more unpatrolled territory for LBs to account for.
Hell, now they can and will single-up in at least one more spot, and that right there is a whole ’nother BODY to throw into or at the trenches.
As an outsider with relatively imperfect information, it’s sure hard for ME to be patient. But I like the way this year’s KC team looks. They do NOT look obviously slower than the competition. They do NOT look unsure of themselves. They look a whole lot more like pro’s. Dunno why so few are picking up on this. Maybe I’ve just replayed too much preseason, analyzing the PIECES so hard, and seeing real progress. But I’m getting a strong overall sense of finally seeing a KC team that has everybody understanding the team concept.
"I ain't lyin' 'bout nothin'."
"Oh? So what exactly are you lying about?"
hope you're correct
we’ll see
all i know is that Pioli has clearly put coaching/character ahead of talent
while good in theory i just wish he could of done of getting more of both
I think they've been very much about bringing in talent.
I think it’s just Pioli’s sense of value is far better informed and subtle than what little I can get from the best blog on the planet.
And with respect to the RT spot, in particular, if they couldn’t develop at least ONE decent guy out of the platoon they threw at it this time last year, then what’s the point? As long as they’re as good or better across the board (and they pretty much ARE), isn’t that really HUGE?
If ‘10 were a throwaway year, I think they’d’ve gone about things quite a bit differently. They want to win NOW and they want to win in the future, and so far, Pioli hasn’t painted himself into any corners. The real test is whether his system GETS to contention and STAYS in contention. Carl did a great job in GETTING to contention, but his last decade or so was just throwing patches on worn-out clothing. Pioli’s doing it so each year he’s reloading and throwing more smart talent into the pot.
"I ain't lyin' 'bout nothin'."
"Oh? So what exactly are you lying about?"
Very good analysis Mills!
I agree with you completely.

BTW, NFL Matchup is on Sunday mornings at 7:30 EST
Great show. You’ll be a smarter fan for watching it.
If Adam Schefter says it's gonna happen.... it's gonna happen.
So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.
yeah
just like Buffalo and Oakland want Leinart….
right…Schefter is ALWAYS right….just ask Jeff Fisher

Glad we are back on MNF!
I pick the Chiefs in a squeeker. Its going to be a great game. Man, I wish I could be there! Go Chiefs!
Vegas must think the Chargers have gone down and that we are on our way up.
I mean they kicked our butts last year and they are only favored by 4.5? Thanks Vegas!
time to shock the world we r beating
The chargers by ten

I'm actually surprised anyone from ESPN picked us to win.
Good to see that we have a few friends over on ESPN.
R.I.P. Derrick Thomas. The Chiefs and the World have never been the same since your untimely death.
I may have to borrow the verizon card from work
and take my laptop to the bar on monday when I go to watch…..I have a great feeling about the game & I think AP is gonna be smoking up the lines that night!

always thought schefter gave a lil pref treatment to KC and Denver for whatever reason.
Wish he stayed with NFL N
I saw Eisen got a promotion, to take him off the highlights at the end of the day though is pretty brutal….hes very good at his job…wish they had just kept schefter too, that was the BEST when he was there getting information on his phone WHILE discussing another topic…
oh well
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
thats what i expected
I thought we would get 2 maybe 3 picking us. The fact is if we win the game it will be because of the huge emotional rush of a packed house on MNF & our running game must set up play action. I don’t know if we will win, but im positive we will be competitive to the end of it.
But
K.C. was 10 point underdogs at the start of preseason, so the people in Vegas are recognizing that we are improving.
The rest will bare witness to the K.C. Chiefs soon…
Good sign that Adam and Jaws are picking KC – they are fairly knowledgeable.
But point by point SD does have a lot of holes:
No LT
Rookie RB’s 1st game
No Vince Jackson
No McNeil
No Merriman
On the road vs a division rival
Chargers are notoriously slow starters most seasons lately
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
Chargers RB
Alot of people on AP are saying that ryan matthews in the place of LT is a big weakness but i’m not so sure. Last year LT was a shadow of the MVP LT everyone thinks of. Sure he had some decent games against our chiefs last year but so did everybody.
Also, RB is regarded as the easiest position to transition from the college level to the nfl. True, Ryan Matthews is unproven, but i wouldnt be at all surprised if his numbers in 2010 are better than LT’s in 2009
A HUGE heartbreak in San Diego that would be heard in Kansas City...
I think it would be freakin’ hilarious to pickup Vincent Jackson on Sunday afternoon. Even though he couldn’t play – him just being a Chief would be like punchin’ that whole city in the “Sugar Lumps”. They could even take the same flight to K.C.
Id like to go ahead and...
Congratualte Tamba Hali on his huge game on Monday Night Football. Arrowheads gonna be rocking with flashes of a real defense again.

Get used to folks picking against the Chiefs.
Nobody was picking the Donks early last year and then jumped on the bandwagon at 6-0….DOH!! bad example
