Pats Fan wants to know how the Chiefs Faithful are feeling...
Dear Arrowheads,
Full disclaimer, I am a New England Patriots fan but I've spent many, many afternoons (and evenings) wandering the smokey lots of one of the finest sports venues in the world, breathing that hickory laced, rib-soaked sweetness that is what football in the fall is all about.
Rumors abound and my local sources have eyes on the AFC West crown and a trip to the Promised Land. I realize they brought in a slew of Superbowl rings to help the project but in the land of "In Bill We Trust" where anything not related directly to the fortunes of the home town teams seems to travel under the wire I can't yet make an informed decision.
My question is to all fans of the KC Crowd and it concerns the fortunes of that storied franchise. Is the hype for real? Can the Chiefs win the AFC West title? What are the true bloodlines saying in advance of the Monday Night opener?
Very much like to hear the response, have a great rest of the day and cheers to what I hope is a great season for all of you.

No....not this year
We will not win the AFC West this year…maybe in 2 possibly 3 years we will be a steady & real contender.
We don’t realistically believe that bringing in all the Patriot players & staff that we have are going to miraculously shoot us up to the promised land….although after a few pitchers of Kool-aid, we’re singing a different tune!
I will be happy if we skate into second in the AFC West personally……..that’s my miracle for this year…..

my take-
Can we win the AFC West? Yes but we are going to need alot of help.
1. SD must fall flat on their faces this year. Rivers has to fail miserably or just flat out get beat in games by opposing teams offenses. I doubt SD falls flat on their face but I do expect a slight shift of a few more L’s showing up this year.
2. Our new Coordinators must prove their worth, and unite a pretty young, and inexperianced team, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Lots of high draft picks in our front 7 but also lots of expecatations and hopes as they have been less than stellar. If Romeo can coach them up and we see improvement in our second year of the 3-4 then maybe. Also we need to stop giving up the huge play, not just the big play, the huge play. Usually every third game some no name from another team actually got a name against the Chiefs. We must stop that.
3. Matt Cassel. Scroll through the AP archives and those two words together are brought up in almost every single post on here, except for maybe craigs proposal to Heather but I’m sure it found its way in there somehow. If Matt Cassel can become who Pioli thought he was when he traded for him then you will see many happy Chief fans in Chief Nation. If he duplicates his 2009 season, check back in here starting in March and see how hot this place gets during draft talk.
4. The fans and homefield advantage. Arrowhead used to be the place for NFL football. Now we are facing blackouts and having trouble selling tickets. That happens when you win 10 games in 3 years. If the Chiefs can smack the Dolts in the mouth on Monday Night, I would expect us to rebuild our homefield advantage rather quickly, thus giving the players something to play for on Sundays.
In closing, being a Chiefs homer and diehard fan, I will always say yes we can win the AFC West. Every year there is a team that rises up and goes from the bottom to the top. While I still think we have alot of key issues to address, it very well could be us, but we are going to need a little help from SD, Oakland, and Denver crapping their own pants.

Well said
Our schedule and the weakness in the rest of the division are what gives us the shot to win it.
Man I can’t wait for the time when the AFC West is hands down the toughest division again. I miss those days.
Crack me up
except for maybe craigs proposal to Heather but I’m sure it found its way in there somehow

Seriously RadioKjed, a good number of us are drinking the Red and Gold Koolaid. We believe. We believe in our GM, our Coaching staff, and to a large degree our players. We’ve seen drastic improvement and several surprises. It’s not so much that Matt Cassel has to improve his passing, but our receivers will have to improve their catching. The run game is there. Right now ranked 2nd in the League. Every opponent’s #1 goal will be to stop the Chief’s run game. Frankly, I’m not sure anyone can.
I’m probably not alone when I say I’m concerned about depth. Most teams are concerned about depth somewhere on their roster. But that’s part of the game in the NFL with only 53 on the team and 45 on gamedays. The Chiefs are young.
Heather thinks 2-3 years…I disagree. Chiefs have one of the weakest schedules in ‘10. Worst case scenario in my estimation will be a wildcard birth. So in answer to your question I say, yeah it’s possible for the Chiefs to win the AFC West. It’s more likely they come in 2nd place. But there are two other teams that will want to have something to say about that.

Come back, Jason!
hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I think we are still a work in progress...
I too have my concerns about not adding starters to the front 7. We changed ONLY the Def Coord a few years ago, and it did nothing for the team. (Vermeil hired Gun back)
I do have high hopes though at this point and will always root for my Chiefs! As far as the West title, only with a lot of luck in my opinion, however 2nd place seems within reason.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
If Pioli goes back to his roots and starts taping opponents’ practices again...

If I may
Thanks for your kind and well written post. As an avid reader of this site, I believe I have a decent sense of this community’s sentiments about the Chiefs prospects in 2010. Briefly, there have been significant improvement made on offense, defense and special teams. In some cases — such as our running game, offensive line, return game and secondary, it is likely that the improvements will be fairly dramatic.
My personal feeling, and I believe that this falls within the mainstream of Arrowhead Pride, is that we are at least one year away — possibly two — from being a true contender. Most believe that we are likely to win between 7 and 9 games this season. Although, with a little luck, it is not out the question that we could win the AFC West this year considering the fact that it is a relatively weak (if not the weakest) division in the NFL. Considering the youth movement on our team, with one more draft and another year for the team to gel under the new leadership, we should be a force in the division for years to come.
now are you a Pats fan or an Its Pat fan?

sure we can win
but it depends on a few factors in the preseason we saw a running game and defense we haven’t seen in a few years they looked awful in the preseason years agoi and it carried over into the regular season. This year we saw a team that was fast on defense and running really good explosiveness you could say . I think the chiefs have a puncher’s chance meaning pound the ball, play good defense and keep cassel from throwing too much but when he does spreading the wealth and mixing it up screens , playaction, reverses ,alittle wildcat keeping the defense off balance is key and it will stop the defense pass rush and help the online out too . if a few things fall our way sure we can be looking at a playoff team . with the offense under weis he finds ways to get the ball into the playmakers hands big difference, he knows how to mix it up you just can’t run run pass every 3 plays and with weis he helps big time . with crennel he will have these guys zone blitzing dropping back, sending safeties ,corners everyone on blitzes at any time. and making quarterbacks really uneasy. i saw at times that our blitzes were picked up and still they didn’t have anyone to throw too meaning our secondary and linebackers can cover, are fast and smart and hell it will come down to if the chiefs stop the run i believe. If we can stop the run which is the key to this defense ohhh boy look out anything can happen this season we could blow or we could really turn heads so yes we can win the afc west but we can also be not very good we will find out on monday ! (when we crush, bury and build a tomb for phillip rivers ! )
My thoughts
It is possible for us to win the AFC West, but not likely.
Most people are worried that we didn’t do much with the defensive front 7, but I’m okay with the new attitude and blitz schemes I’ve seen thus far. The D still has a ways to go, but I think they can do a much better job of dealing with the Chargers this year.
It’s really gonna come down to Matt Cassel and the WR core this year. Everbody knows we had more than enough drops to go around, and that falls on both the QBs and WRs. Sometimes it was Cassel, sometimes it was the WRs. But that part of our offense has got to be a bigger threat in order for us to have a balanced attack that keeps time of possession up and the defense resting on the bench.
We’re catching up to the Chargers as far as talent goes, but we need near flawless execution and some big breaks this year in order to take the West.
I was mad as $#%@ when we drafted Dexter McCluster and now I'm ordering his jersey......oh the irony! Go Chiefs!

haha very eloquent entrance
Projections vary as to how the Chiefs will fare this year
All of us are optimistic for the year. How far will they go? Injuries, Matt Cassel, and the defense will determine that.
Our schedule is easier this year, we have more talent, players are better accustomed to the system, and we have a promising class of rookies.
This will be an exciting year and I’m guessing it will be a tight competition for the division title!
as a side note, I’m going to boston in a couple weeks for a conference. Pretty excited to head back to b town
In simple terms,
On our way out of the cellar we’re going to have to make a pit stop at average before we reach our final destination of being an annual playoff team.
"There is no charge for awesomeness" - Kung Fu Panda
AFC West is up for grabs
I don’t believe the Chargers are head and shoulders above the rest. As far as who will emerge – the Chiefs have as good a chance as any. The Chiefs are trending upward faster than the other three this year, I believe. The Chiefs’ weaknesses? The lines – O and D. Can better coaching this year create schemes that get the most from our personnel? Yes. Good enough to win 9-10 games? We’ll see. Can a team with two rookie safeties make the playoffs? We’ll see. (Sorry, McGraw, I like you better as the back-up.) Will Cassell finally realize there is a countdown clock for each play and know how to simply get rid of a ball when that’s the best option? Hope so.
Hard to believe I have had more Kool-Aid than Porkchop, but I believe in a sport with this much parity that finishing 2010 atop the relatively weak AFC West is within reach this year.
To sum it up in short, I guess
If I had to assign a percent value to the chance of each team in the AFC West coming out on top:
SD 40%
KC 25%
OAK 25%
DEN 10%
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Pats Fan STILL impressed with that KC Passion...
Arrowheads,
I feel like I just spent the whole pre-season camped out by the practice field getting to know the staff, players and coaches on a first name basis. I’ve always loved and respected that KC Fire for the home town boys.
Thanks for the insightful comments and surgical dissection of their chances this season. Despite the new injection of flavor to the team this year with the Pioli Project I think there’s more to this team than what first meets the eye and while the coin could flip either way I believe the AFC West is about to shift in 2010.
So much will be told by their performance on Monday Night; few games in Week One can match the importance of THAT particular contest. I’d love to see 80,000 red-clad fanatics rocking the Stadium and sending the Chargers slinking back up the tunnel with tails between their legs.
And I, for one, think that is what will happen. Cassel is a good quarterback, maybe not great just yet but average field generals don’t sit sidelines for four season under a Belichick-coached team without having something worthwhile between their ears. The new coordinators will certainly help and that face lift to Arrowhead might play a role in bringing the fans back to Sunday Tradition.
I side with Sunny D in that the AFC West is up for grabs. Denver is anybody’s guess, Oakland might turn some heads and the Chargers…well, they do hold the wild card.
Still, the Chiefs have their opportunity and an AFC West banner might be theirs for the taking. They may not need 10 wins to take that crown.
Best of luck to the Red, White and Gold this season, I’ll be rooting for them. Thanks for the insightful feedback as well, very much appreciated.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Thanks for stopping by and for cheering NE West
Agree with your assessment. The game is important as both a barometer for 2010, as well as the division standings. Assuming you want to at least split with division rivals, this is the only home game the Chiefs have against the Chargers this year. (Thanks, Cpt. Obvious) It just happens to take place the first week.
much will be told…on Monday Night; few games in Week One can match the importance
We're headed in the right direction BUT...
our two drafts (prior to 2010) have been very disappointing!!! Sure we got Jamaal Charles and Brandon Flowers in 2008 (under Carl Peterson) but the jury is still out on our two 1st rounders…Glenn Dorsey and Branden Albert. \
Last year was almost a total waste. The only starters we got were Tyson Jackson (so far, UNDERWHELMING) and the last overall pick of the whole dam draft, Mr. Irrelevant himself, our kicker…Ryan Succop. In all fairness, it was a harrible draft class across the board.
This years draftee’s look awesome so far. They are all smart/high character leaders who were captains in college. They seem to be the kind of fella’s you want to build a dynasty upon and they also add alot of “pizazz” to a team that was hard to watch last year. Hopefully they will put some more ass’s in seats at Arrowhead as some of last years games looked like Royals games.
We still have some glaring needs on the D Line…we will need upgrades in the LB core, we have some elder statesmen on our O-Line in Weigman and Waters which will need to be addressed soon along with Branden if he under performs this year (and I think he will…prob better at RG or maybe even RT, doesnt seem to have the agility to be a primier LT…he’s naturally a guard anyway) and it is a make or break year for our soft armed QB…yup, you know him well…Matty C. With better protection, more weapons and Charlie up his ass…I hope he can regain his NE form but I also doubt he will ever be an ELITE QB…hard to be king of the mountain these days without an ELITE QB.
Coaching is great but THEY DON’T SUIT UP! We need more talent and CANNOT afford to miss on critical picks in our draft’s…that sets an organization back by years!!!
We are steadily climbing out of the basement and not paying huge $$$ for blockbuster free agents…rather, building and developing through the draft is what seems to be Pioli’s chosen path leading towards long term improvement…slowly but surely we are getting there.
8-8…maybe 9-7 would be a great year here…I still believe San Diego is the team to beat in the West…but hopefully NOT FOR LONG!!!
Really?
I agree with most of what you said, except for the 2008 draft being a waste… Branden Albert is an above average LT who is continuing to improve, and Dorsey is adjusting to a new position but continues to improve as well. JC is obvious. Plus both of our starting cornerbacks came out of that draft, Carr and Flowers. Plus we got depth at o-line with Barry Richardson late. So thats 6 players from that draft still on our team, 5 are starters. I’ll take that any day. Sure it would be great if we saw more from our two first rounders of that year, but overall I think it would be hard to hate on a draft where you got 5 immeadiate starters (two of which look to be destined to be pro bowlers sooner rather than later).

how do we feel? with our HANDS! (cue laugh track ... annnnnnnnnnd cut!)
I thought this a football blog, and here you go talking BBQ …
hickory laced, rib-soaked sweetness …
seriously, not many of us believe we’ll win the division (this year) but almost all of us look for 8 maybe 9 wins and a vast improvement over last year … improvement and a higher overall level of play on both sides of the ball, consistency and competitiveness … and call it a good year

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Agreed
If you look at the schedule, and ask your self will the Chiefs be the favorite or underdog? There are 5 home games I believe we could be the favorite, and 3 road games. So, what happens when an 8 win team get some lucky breaks? 10-6 Of course unlucky breaks mean 6-10 or worse, but I look at the optimistic side of the equation.
I might be a HUGE homer...
…But if we win on Monady I think we will indeed outright win the AFC West this year.
