Chiefs WR/RB Dexter McCluster's Fantasy Football Value Is A Hot Topic

As part of Chris' duties helping me run Arrowhead Pride, he tracks what folks are searching for on the internet so we know what's going on in the world of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The hot topic this week: Dexter McCluster.

Ah, yes, it must be fantasy football time.

McCluster's value is being debated by quite a few folks out there. I think people are intrigued by the various roles he's been playing with the Chiefs.

For fantasy football, McCluster is probably a good candidate to select. In addition to his pass catching duties, he's also seen time at running back during the preseason.

The big debate going on in the fantasy football world right now is how many carries McCluster will get. If he gets a handful of carries a game -- and he has a strong yards per carry average -- then that's a few more points he can grab in fantasy football.

I had my fantasy draft last night and couldn't scoop up McCluster in time but I think someone is going to be surprised by the points he can put up.

Did any of you draft McCluster?

I usually draft him with my second to last pick in every league if he's available

At those rounds, it doesn’t hurt to “gamble”

Other Arenas wish they could be like Arrowhead Stadium and when rivals think they are going to be fine on an island of Flowers, they will get hit by what feels like a Carr. Ultimately, they will never be able to eat a Berry ever again.

Did, but not starting.

Also picked up Arenas (we got 10 DPPs), but just dropped him to pick up Orton. Sucks to be me, but I needed a 2nd quarterback.

Yea I picked him up also. I’m using him primarily for KR/PR yrds though. I’m hoping he can get the occasional tackle, sack, or even better interception.

Picked up Arenas too

1st year we tried DPP so scooped DeMarcus Ware, Manny Lawson, and Asomogha in late rounds since no one was really going to defensive players.

I snagged him, but gonna waitto start him until I see at least one full game. I think I got him with my second to last pick, and some of the boys I was draftin with got pretty mad.

by Ryansw2413 on Sep 8, 2010 9:27 AM CDT reply actions

I drafted him rd 8 in a 16 team league.

I was drafting with a bunch of Chief hater’s and guys mostly from the West Coast. But even when I picked him a couple chattered how they thought that was a good pick. And he could be scary good in FF. Also drafted him 12th rd in a 10 team league. Might have to wait a game or two before I consider starting him in that league though.

that's my dilemma as well

I actually got Jamaal and Dex. Picked up Jamaal in 3rd rd and Dex very late, right before DEF and K. But, I am leery to start him until after the first game indicates how he’ll be used.

I guess the real choice before me is either J Knox vs Detroit or Dex vs SD. I have concerns either way but leaning Knox right now.

I got JC and Run DMC, too!

A 12 team league with 15 rounds. I got Jamaal in the 2nd round and Dexter in the 12th round. Oh, and by the way, out those 12 teams about 8 of them are Chiefs fans. So, I think I had a little luck to get both of them. And I am playing Dex as the flex player Monday night. Hey, that could be a new nickname for him " Dex the Flex" ! I believe the Chiefs are gonna unload on the Chargers with all different kinds of plays.

Were you drafting with a lot of Chiefs fan's in the 3rd round pick-up.

He’s good but not that good. I wouldn’t mind seeing somebody in my draft spending their 3rd round pick on DMC.

but the league is set up really crazy. Pretty sure our commish was smoking crack at the time he set it up. League’s probably split between Rams bitches and Chiefs fans, though. And it was a girl who picked him up.

sure did. but I drafted Charles too.

It was interesting to see the amount of Chiefs people drafted, particularly how early someone drafted Thomas Jones.

Picked him up real late

We have a wr/rb utility starter in our league and he fits that to a T. But I don’t need him to do much, I have Brees, Chris Johnson, Aaron Rodgers, and a couple other A level fantasy players on my team and they can carry me week to week. Mccluster was icing on the cake.

im sort of like that

except i dont draft people from the other teams in the afc west. that way i dont have two weeks a year when i feel bad about starting that key player

by Mayday07 on Sep 8, 2010 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I got him in the 10th in 16 round...

I was in my friends draft this weekend and I knew that he was not going to fall too much more. I think he’s going to fall into the “Sproles/E. Royal Effect” from 2 years ago. (?) I like that fact that he could get rushing and receptions which is a plus for me in a PPR league. Ultimately he’s going to get the ball, just because he can be a total game changer at anytime.

This is how my draft shook out:
1. (7) Andre Johnson WR
2. (18) Roddy White WR
3. (31) Arian Foster RB
4. (42) Ahmad Bradshaw RB
5. (55) Malcom Floyd WR
6. (66) Eli Manning QB
7. (79) Marion Barber RB
8. (90) Mike Williams WR
9. (103) Ben Roethlisberger QB
10. (114) Dexter McCluster WR,RB
11. (127) Nate Burleson WR
12. (138) Bernard Scott RB
13. (151) Tony Scheffler TE (Pick up the “Gronk” from NE)
14. (162) Anthony Dixon RB
15. (175) Neil Rackers K
16. (186) Cleveland DEF (Return yards are included)

I got a question? How much added value does Dexter McCluster have now that J.Urban is out?

Wouldn’t he be the slot in more in 3 WR sets now.

Picked him up as a FA.

Not sure about a start. I have Charles and Bowe (seriously, they were BPA when I selected them) and don’t want to start too many Chiefs.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Sep 8, 2010 10:02 AM CDT reply actions

I took him in the 5th round of our Arrowheadpride CBS Fantasy league...

There were too many Chiefs fans in there to let him slide. Charles went at the top of the 2nd round.

As it was I had a need for RB/WR… and decided to pull the trigger on it rather than wait.

Your Team

Looks pretty solid. Of course in a 10 team league we all look good right now. Except for the poor guy who got shafted via the Autodraft. Poor guy took his kicker in the 5th.

Actually the league I'm in is 12 team

I’m a little thin at RB (CJ, LT, and Stewart are my mains), so I’m hoping for good production from my WRs and be able to pull a trade. I guess we’ll see. They all look good after the draft.

he used to go in a 10 team draft in the 8th or so, now....hes a 5th or 6th round pick or earlier if a bills fan is there.

I actually went with him in the 5th in my final league the other day. Had D.Williams/Charles Brady/Welker as first 4 picks, and just had to nab a spiller for that BOOM potential.

Banking my future on Spiller....

We have a cool keeper league rule allowing us to draft a rookie and then tag him as our “player of ther future”

The bad news is he becomes undroppable until after NEXT years draft.

The good news is if he works out we can tag him at a discount every year moving forward…I drafted Spiller in the middle rounds (7 I think) and tagged him.

I committed a cardinal sin...

I forgot about my draft!

BUT

I signed Matt Cassel from FA….he is starting.

I traded Ray Rice and Clinton Portis to my brother for Jamaal Charles and Dexter McCluster. I’m starting JC and DC!

"One of the teams asked me a running back question," McCluster said. "They said when you have the ball, do you focus on the guy who's in front of you or the next guy.

"I told them 99% of the time, I'm going to make that first guy miss. Then, I'm onto the next."

by Matt_Grbac on Sep 8, 2010 10:09 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

I do that once a year, sort of on purpose, or if its on accident then its my 1 of 4 like that...Its actually sort of interesting

I tend to end up using so many waiver pickups like say mccluster and win that way…slow start=waiver priority which=win league.

Here is what is great about him

He is the only WR/RB in the NFL. So i can start him at WR but also get RB points and KR. He is very versitille and I snagged him in the 12th round. Also snagged Vincent Jackson who many leagues didn’t draft but we are in a keeper and he’ll be back.

I picked him up. I think Chiefs have been hiding the awesomeness I observed in St. Joe (saw him rip a pair of shoes apart with a single cut!…his speed is insane!) Look out he is going to surprise everyone…maybe even rookie of the year…if not him…it will be Berry!

by Dan Sample on Sep 8, 2010 10:16 AM CDT reply actions

I only got McCluster in one league

I have a few leagues with Chief fans so getting him was an issue. I do have one team though with Chris Johnson, Megatron, FItz, Gates, Rothlisberger/Flacco so that’s looking promising enough without McC.

by BucktheFroncos on Sep 8, 2010 10:21 AM CDT reply actions

I got him in the 16th round

It was the final round of a 10 team PPR league. I was really happy. I have him on the bench and am waiting to see how he scores. I have plenty of talent ahead of him, so I felt I could risk him washing out. But I think he has the potential to be a very solid PPR scoring threat.

2) Tom Brady
3) Randy Moss

5) Arian Foster
6) JC
7)Donald Driver
8)Kenny Britt (another bad pick… was prepared and had to just grab someone)
9) Braylon Edwards
10) Ahmad Bradshaw (I shouldnt have gotten him this low…gotta love the guys Im playin with)
11) Sam Bradford
12) Austin Collie
13) McCluster
14) 49rs DST
15) Michael Hoomanawanui
16) Ryan Succop

TRS Chief: CJ Spiller....

is definitely rising fast based on his preseason performance and injuries to F.Jackson and M. Lynch. Going late 50s/early 60s in my drafts. Great upside for a RB3 or Flex player. Ralph Wilson wants the Bills to be entertaining if we are going to lose games anyways!

I haven’t drafted him in my other two leagues, and he’s still sitting on the waiver wire. I don’t want to lose a true starter for DmC until I see what he can do in a live game.

its still a bit of a steal in around 12-15...like you said, you see names flying off the board with ZERO potential, and he sits there.

in the espn leagues, he is ranked SO LOW, 204 overall…even after they updated it and made arian foster a 5th rounder, and charles 29th, they still have mccluster over 200, nuts

I drafted him with my 2nd to last pick because even on Yahoo sports his versatility is recognized.

I don’t think he’ll be amazing fantasy wise, but his aforementioned versatility make him an ideal bench player who i could start in a pinch since i can put him as a RB or WR

Bummed

I was the 4th pick in a 10 team league and by the time my 2 round pick came up JC was gone…so settled for DMC in the 14th RD and Succop in the 15th. I’m in a PPR league and return yards count as well so I think after a few weeks of the chiefs offense ol DMC can start putting out second half JC numbers.

(16th round) all draft long I kept saying I couldn’t wait to draft my “super-sleeper” in the 16th round…everyone was trying to guess and even knowing I’m a Chiefs fan couldn’t figure it out. The best part is my league awards points for rushing, recieving, and kick returning… even out of the WR slot so IMO McCluster will produce nicely. After I took him with that last pick several owners sighed with embarassment that they for got about him…even 20 year FFB veterans. We all agree now, it was THE steal of the draft.

i took mcluster second to last pick.

Im in 3 fantasy football leagues.
In 1 league i took mcluster with the second to last pick and also got bowe in round 5.

In another i took jamal charles with the 15th overall pick in a 12 man league, i took andre johnson at 10th overall and most the really good RBs were gone already so i had to take him cause it was a snake draft and it would have took awile to come back to me. I took him over ryan mathews. anyone disagree?

In the 3rd league im in they play CB,S,LB, and DE also but no kicker or defense/team and i took S eric berry, DE tamba hali ( i know he is a LB but they have him as DE? my starter is mario williams from houston at DE i got tamba really late, and still one of my favorites S BERNARD POLLARD. Beilive it or not pollard was top 1 or 2 last year at S in fantasy football only playing 13 games? check his stats out.
