Kansas City Chiefs Depth Chart Changes From 2009 To 2010: Defense

We already looked at the offensive side of things here and now it's the defense.

I'm taking a look at the depth chart at this time last year and comparing it to the depth chart the Kansas City Chiefs issued for the Monday Night Football game against the San Diego Chargers.

Here are the three changes from 2009's first depth chart to 2010's first depth chart:

NT Tank Tyler (Ron Edwards): I'm not sure that this is an upgrade. Maybe Edwards is currently better but Tyler at least represented youth and hope. If this is an upgrade, it's not a big one.

ILBs Demorrio Williams/Corey Mays (Derrick Johnson/Jovan Belcher): I feel that this is an upgrade overall. DJ seemed to make plays when he was in the game last year and Williams didn't have a sack or an interception last year so I think DJ gives the Chiefs a better shot of making big plays.

SS Mike Brown (Eric Berry): Berry hasn't played a regular season game yet and I think many agree that he's a somewhat significant upgrade over Brown.

I'm not sure that the defense got a whole lot better not counting development of guys already in place, other than safety. Edwards and DJ/Belcher could be considered upgrades but not big enough that I think it's a significant difference.

Its hard to see very much improvement

other than Berry obviously. I don’t think McGraw will be the starter all season and until Arenas plays a game its hard to consider him a better nickel corner.

I would argue that when you have a lot of young players you should always improve.

When you look at a lot of the positions that have not changed they are all very young. Experience should make them all better players. There are all “ascending players”.
Carr, Flowers, Jackson, Dorsey should all improve.
Hali is the old guy, but don’t forget he should be better as well in his second season in 3-4.

Despite not a whole lot of new personnel, I do think the defense will be improved this year.

by saskwatch on Sep 8, 2010 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions

I also think we are going to be improved this year

but not by leaps and bounds. I dont expect us to go from 31st to top 10 like some on here are predicting. I would like to see us sack the QB more, force more 3 and outs, and be positive in the turnover catagory. Stopping the big play is also necessary but I still feel some teams are going to punish us up the gut.

Like Raider fans think they will?

I agree I don’t see a 31st to top 10 jump but it would be nice to see maybe a top 22ish run D and a top 15 passing D this year, ending up at about 20th in overall defense.

by GenericBrand on Sep 8, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

exactly

apparently the Raiders and their fans expect some huge breakout performance. While that does tend to happen for at least one team per year, I doubt it will be them. If anyone I think Seattle, Chicago, or San Fran have a better chance at it than they do. Marked improvement and continued growth is what Im looking for. While it would be nice to see them jump way up, we have to remember that our defense was horrid in several catagories last year, eliminating a few of them is going to go a long ways.

One more reason the defense will be better- the Offense

The offense should be improved. With a healthy running game and an offense that can make a few first downs the defense may not have to play the entire game. Don’t overlook how important the amount of time a defense is on the field plays on rankings. If Defense is on for 40 minutes vs 25 minutes they are going to give up a lot more points and yards (even if they are exactly the same).

by saskwatch on Sep 8, 2010 8:57 AM CDT up reply actions

great point

early 3 and outs by the offense is going to make our defense suffer.

by jrcnc on Sep 8, 2010 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

We MUST learn how to get out of the gate more quickly on offense. We’re talking about Herm-levels of offensive dissapointment in the first 2 minutes—it’s embarrassing.

embarrassing is kind

it kills me every Sunday to watch them attempt to move the ball. I really hope we can focus on building a quick lead early in the games and rely on our defense to hold it. It would be a good test early in the season to see our how our defense can hold a lead.

great idea

I wonder what they were focused on last season?

by just a guy on Sep 8, 2010 11:46 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

just getting a first down

we know we can move the ball as shown in the preseason when we dont fumble it. Now we need to focus on scoring fast and early. Last year they stared at 3 and long almost every first possession.

by jrcnc on Sep 8, 2010 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

sorry, i was being a smartass

I think they wanted to score pretty badly but you can’t score on three plays, I hope they still focus on first downs.

by just a guy on Sep 8, 2010 12:22 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Another thing too if you go back and crunch the numbers...

Crennel defenses(at least his time spent in NE) tend to rank out better in points allowed then they ever did in yardage and total defense. They had the one stellar year of top 5 D but otherwise they were a 12-18th ranked defense but would rank better then that in points allowed.

which

I noticed in the Green Bay preseason game. Although it was 3rd stringers. We stopped them in the red zone several times and on 4th downs, just gave up 1,395,932 yards passing to whats his name.

It is important to note that Dorsey and T-Jax will be improved. Plus Romeo will give this D an identity.

1.One year in the system and one more year of experience will do wonders for young players.
2. Aggressive play calling will make the game fun for the D – It seems they have an attitude now
3. The offense is better
4. The special teams are better

by ALR on Sep 8, 2010 8:16 AM CDT reply actions

do we really know they will? Im sure people said the same thing about Siavii and Sims. I hope they are improved but I’m not holding my breathe.

The Chiefs offence will EXPLODE in 2010

by trentchiefsfan on Sep 8, 2010 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions

We will have to wait untill Monday...

Throughout the season Jackson and Dorsey had shown improvements learning the 3-4. In limited play Jackson has looked pretty darn good opening up Demorrio Williams to get the sack. Watching what Jackson has done on the line this preseason shows that he looks much better than he had last preseason.

Neither have played a full game so we will have to see how they look when they play their first full game of the 2010 season. I’m ok with saying Jackson has vastly improved from last season. Dorsey I really can’t tell if he has improved…

Go Chiefs!!!!

by chiefsfan62 on Sep 8, 2010 8:58 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Not a lot of improvement on paper.

Going solely off looks, I think the front seven, this pre-season, looked MUCH better than last year going 1st Team vs 1st Team. It remains to be seen, however, if this will carry over to the regular season.

I DO think simply having Eric Berry makes our defense THAT much better, but that obviously won’t take us from 30th to a Top 10 on its own accord.

Here’s to being hopeful…

Discipline

that’s why the defense wll be better.
One more year in Haley’s army, and a general you can trust in Crennel

I agree with Kevinlane

Knowing how to utilize the talent you have cannot be underestimated. I thought Cunningham did a poor job…and Clancy last year was even worse.

I think Romeo will get the max out of our Defensive players…and we’ll find out that some of these guys are better than we thought.

Don't forget conditioning.

I think the Chiefs will be one of the best conditioned teams in football. Hopefully that will help our defense in the 4 quarter of games.

conditioning will go along way. Seeing as how the majority of these games I expect to be pretty close in the 4th quarter.

The best SILB is Belcher hands down...

The best WILB is a combination of the two guys and I think we’ll see that. Even if DJ is the “starter” I think he’s the starter about as much as Thomas Jones is the starter.

would if we needed the pick

just cause you trade a guy doesn’t mean you don’t want him. just means his upside wasn’t worth the pick. if we can get his upside back for “free” what is keeping us from doing that?

by Chief TigerGator on Sep 8, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

huh?

That makes no sense…a bird in the hand, you don’t give up a good player for a complete unknown. If they liked the guy there’s no way they let him go for a low round pick on the hopes that 6 months later you get a better player. Especially with our DT situation last year, Tank tanked. Maybe you’d make that trade if you knew who you’d get with the pick, but they couldn’t even know that much. They haven’t signed him so that pretty much says he wasn’t their kind of guy.

you had me at Berry replaces Brown

Seems like that one personnel change along with everyone else being more comfortable w the system, and Crennel’s influence will change the face of the defense… more aggressive, faster, fewer big plays allowed

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

by stagdsp on Sep 8, 2010 8:56 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Edwards over Tyler is an upgrade

I liked Tyler when he got here, but he never really did anything, and now he’s been cut by Carolina. Edwards is serviceable, and that’s an upgrade over a young guy who Pioli gave up on last year and who now is unemployed.

Also, is this a look at the changes in the depth chart or just in the starting lineup? Because we’ve upgraded on a lot of sucky players who were on the depth chart last year and have been replaced by guys who should at the least have more upside, some of whom should be solid players.

Some examples: going from Rocky Boiman as a backup to Demorrio Williams as a backup is a big upgrade. A guy like Leggett was our #3 corner last year, now he’s #4 if he’s healthy.

by Offense of the 70s on Sep 8, 2010 9:00 AM CDT reply actions

good point

improvement isn’t just about first stringers. depth counts a lot. for that reason i think arenas really contributes (not to mention his kick-returning), as do asamoah and battle.

battle was here last year, but he’s really developed over the past offseason. honestly, a few months ago i was wishing we’d cut him just to get some junk off the roster, now i’m glad we have him.

Tank

I think we should have kept Tyler, he’s young so he could have improved.

We need to draft Eric Berry, no if's / and's or buts about it!!!!

by nfamous209 on Sep 8, 2010 9:17 AM CDT reply actions

his play didn't show it

he’s young so he could have improved.

That could be said for alot of people, there are hits and their are misses. To me it speaks volumes that we traded him away and the team that traded for him cut him. At least we got something in the end.

The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.

by jrcnc on Sep 8, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Not only that we traded him to a 4-3 team

So now he’s played significant time in both and failed in both so there’s a larger problem there.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Sep 8, 2010 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

I tend to believe

that poor coaching can make good players become average; as good coaching can make average players play well. Good coaching can also uncover hidden talent that was always there, but not discovered. In addition, most of the returning players are young, and have known nothing but poor coaching – until Weis and Crennel came along. I’ve seen so many good players on this team fail and become successful somewhere else (Pollard). I think the lack of change in starters is because of the considerable change in the performance of the players, and the coaching staff. We’ll see if I’m right.
