@whudson712: Which team is the surest bet to win in week 1?

@SI_PeterKing Quite an egalitarian week. Very tough. If I had to pick, I'd say SD.

Hard to make that pick on MNF at Arrowhead.

Because Dallas' offensive line looks so good right?

Dallas has to be easily the most overhyped/overrated team going into this season. Someone needs to call Jerry Jones and tell him that playmakers ain’t jack unless you got some big uglies to hold the trenches.

...And as the roar of 80,000 red-clad great plains warriors fills the hallowed halls of Arrowhead, it will strike fear into the hearts of lesser men. For on that field, individual men toil for something greater than individual honors. They toil as brothers-in-arms, as 53 spirits striving towards a single purpose and driven by a single goal: The glory that comes with vanquishing your foes. They will achieve their birthright, they will be champions.

I don't necessarily believe that, either.

Dallas looks like they’re not ready. Washington will be bad, IMO, but Shannahan has burned my ass more than once.

And I don’t typically bet against McNabb. I love that dude.

And I could argue that SF is better than average too

I think theyre slightly above average. That is a tough defense, a good ground attack, and a pedestrian QB with some legit options in the passing game.

Exactly

I like the Chiefs’ chances a lot, but if I wasn’t a fan, I’m not sure I wouldn’t pick the Chargers as my one semi-lock also. Like him or not, I don’t really see anything wrong with his pick, given the schedule.

Jamaal Charles...Enough said.

by Chiefsfan85 on Sep 7, 2010 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll put it this way, every week I do a three team parlay (if confident enough)

and my three picks this week are SF, MIA, and DET. DET would be my lock, but I feel confident enough in SF and MIA to call those as near to locks as I can. I’ll say this much though, I usually stray away from betting Chiefs games (I do wins over/under and season long futures bets on them only for the most part) so I wouldn’t bet SD anyways, but I wouldn’t feel confident enough about a slow starting team missing half its probowlers going into a rowdy Arrowhead on MNF anyways.

BUT!

But in this case, its not that I'm betting on the Chiefs

its that I’m betting against the Chargers. Like I said, I’m not putting money on it either way. But regarding week 1, I am not a fan of taking a team that usually starts of slow, that’s missing a lot of its key players from last season, and is playing MNF on the road in a stadium that’s known for its hoopla.

You pretty much said everything i just said on twitter

Wk1 is a toss up. Tough to gm plan because most teams don’t have an identity. We almost beat the ravens in wk1 and that was with croyle and LJ.

Its opening night at arrowhead and a full arrowhead in primetime is arguably the most difficult place to play.

Chargers are mising 6 pro bowlers from the roster. LT, Cromartie, and Jamal Williams are gone. McNeil and Vincent Jackson are holding out. Merriman has an achillies injury.

Eric Berry vs Gates could help because Gates is their #1 receiver

SD is vunerable against the run which could be KCs strong point

Chargers are nptorious for starting slow. Look at the past 3 years. Even last year, Oakland barely lost to those guys on MNF opening night.

I’m not 100% sold on KC winning. I’m praying for a good outing, but SD is the real deal. They are legitamte contenders. All that being said, I don’t think its so easy to say KC is a sure bet loss. We have a good chance at getting the win.

I just said that to a co-worker not even an hour ago.

The hits on Favre and that BULLSHIT pass interference call in OT. I swear the NFL was trying to roll with the Saints “Cinderella story line”. I had some serious concerns about the officiating for that game.

Granted, the Saints did win the SB, and that was a dominant showing by them. Not trying to take that away, but MIN was the better team two seeks before that.

I think it had more to do with the city of New Orleans...

But hey Brees isn’t uncharismatic. He’s the most vocal leader of that team and the guy has a good heart. He’s kind of the NFL’s “Joe Everyman”. You know… kind of like what Favre used to be before he became the drama king he is now.

There was 8 fumbles, 2 awful non calls and the worst pass interence call in the history of football in overtime.

by craig in calgary on Sep 7, 2010 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I wasn't putting the lose on Favre but I was saying that he should never have thrown that ball...

…and if anyone knows they shouldn’t have thrown that ball it’s Brett Favre.

Look they overcame all of A.Pete’s butterball handed fumbles but when the game was on the line and you have a veteran QB…. nay, THE veteran QB taking the snaps there is a certain expectation that he doesn’t throw that ball. Had he just taken a slide, run out of bounds… hell, I think he could have ran for the first down… then that game is left up to the veteran kicker to send you to the Superbowl.

So no, it wasn’t all Favre’s fault his teammate kept dropping the ball but it is his fault that when called upon to make the correct decision to put the team in a position to win that game, which is the reason Brett was/is a Viking, Favre dropped the ball.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

That Pass Interference call against Tony G. was the worst I have ever seen (from the Punt-less game).

And I truly think MINN is no better than 8-8 this year they are too banged up. Saints won’t be great either but they beat the Vikes Thursday. Mark it down.

Too banged up?

Sydney Rice – Yes that is a loss. But who was Rice before Favre? Watch Greg Freaking Camarillo go all Wes Welker this year.

Percey Harvin – Battled migranes last year and still played unreal. He will probably never play 16 games per year but he is a game changer when he is in.

Their starting ILB and DB that played dinged last year will both be 100%. I still see 12 wins.

Huge assumption...

…that Favre will play like he did last year. It isn’t very likely…not only that, but Green Bay looks to be a juggernaut this year. Sorry. Sure, he has a bit of that anti-sabermetric feel that many national sportswriters do, but I’m not sure he can be matched pound for pound (as a writer!) with anyone in the NFL on a national scale.

Check out the new FREE online baseball game! I know you'll love it.

This is great news! I hope it moves the spread

If everyone else follows Peter the Great’s advice then the spread is sure to move. I’ll take the moneyline bet thank you very much. The Chiefs WILL win this game. It’s a trap game and they are starting to smell the cheese now.

Sweet...

Biggest upset of the week comes from KC. I’ll take it. I think King is an idiot and needs to be shot in the street, but I’ll take it.

If you liked him before

Why don’t you like him now? Because he’s not a Chiefs fan?

by Tarkus on Sep 7, 2010 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Because

him picking the Chargers makes me seriously question his opinions on things. Why do you care?

Peter King

has been wrong so many times that I would be worried if he had picked us to win. The guy just picked the Steelers to win it all this year. That says it all.

by tophertencha on Sep 7, 2010 5:15 PM CDT reply actions

Didn't...

he pick the Chargers against Green Bay?

by I_Bleed_Red. on Sep 7, 2010 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

He picked

Steelers 33, Green Bay 27 for this year’s Super Bowl in the latest Sports Illustrated NFL preview mag.

PK's other picks

Hoboken Starbucks over the Flatbush Starbucks, Jersey’s just nutmeg cyanide
St. Mary’s Field Hockey over San Bernadino High, Mary Jo Rathway is just unstoppable
Air Tran Preferred over The Delta Hospitality lounge, It’ call Gluten-free get with it big D
Brett Favre’s Jockey’s over Aaron Rogers’ Hane’s, double stitching – all that glitters is not gold my son
My Zune over My Discman, say what you will about “shock resistance” I think these MP3.jpg’s are here to stay
VaTech over Boise State, call me crazy I just gotta feeling, but no one’s stopping KU this year, no one no how
Pepsi Max over Coke Zero, you know they don’t have that in Germany? Get with it Europe!
Toster Strudel over Eggos, squirt on syrup cyanide
NFL Tim Tebow over College Tim Tebow, close call but this one’s just at a different level
Forcing a comparison to the Patriots over fixating on the quarterback, I’m cheating here, the correct answer is Tom Dreamyface Brady
