And Castille over Cox... Jones over Charles (no biggie)

I wish Kendrick Lewis were starting over McGraw – but this early in the season I can understand the choice to go with a veteran who has better knowledge of the opponent.

I’m actually glad Washington is behind Berry – mostly because it pushes Langford further down the chart and further from a chance to see the field other than on special teams.

1st on depth chart

doesnt mean alot in some positions. Like Jones v Charles or Cox v Castille. The player who gets the first play or the most plays/touches will be situational. If i remeber correctly, jones was listed 1st on the depth chart the entire preseason, but charles actually got the first play in either game two or three.( i remember because he fumbled)

Demarrio Williams

I hope he takes this whole D.J. starting over him thing in stride… Its clear to me Hailey will be using D Williams as a pass rusher on 3rd downs…. And who would be upset about ur only job is taking the QB’s head off!!!! Lets GO CHIEFS!!!!

by Josh Moore on Sep 7, 2010 11:36 AM CDT reply actions

I think he'll be ok

He seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders. And like you suggest, he’s probably going to be given more of an opportunity to get after the QB this year. That may go a long way towards soothing hurt feelings.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

by MNchiefsfan on Sep 7, 2010 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Like Jones & Charles

Williams & Johnson… I don’t think it’ll be like last year. They’re gonna see nearly equal playing time. I call it good for both – they’ll be fresh and healthy late in games, and all year.

by David Winton on Sep 7, 2010 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I would be really surprised if Demorrio doesn't see significant time EVERY sunday

He will play a lot, now that we know he can handle that edge rushing position and the weakside ILB he will be on the field a bunch.

I like his passion for the game, hope it rubs off on everybody. Same with Studey’ and Vrabel and Tamba…and Berry…damn we are gonna have a good year.

Its all in the attitude

Talk talent all you want, good teams are about an attitude to win. I’m pretty confident that the Chiefs have a good attitude right now…we’ll see what happens when they hit some adversity like an injury to a key player or a losing streak then we will know how much things have changed.

Situational players

Does anyone else get the sense that our coaches are being too strategic? Situational players all across the board? If guys are playing limited snaps, how are they going to get a feel for the game tempo? If Williams comes in on a crucial 3rd down as his first snap, he might be 1 step slow on his read, which could lead to conversion.

I just don’t know if I like the situational player strategy. Put your best 11 guys out there against the other teams best 11.

I think Demorrio got screwed out of the starting job... but what's done is done and I won't hold a grudge.

For the most part I really like what I see for the most part.

Charles will more than likely get his numbers. I think the nod went to Jones because he knows how to block fot the QB.

I would like to see Lewis move unto that starter role but there is nothing wrong with sitting back and learning.

The biggest thing I see is versatility amongst the roster. Different players for diffrent packages and situations.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

well lets look at it this way....

If DJ does the job every play he is capable of:
a), we are a better defense
       b) he earned it
       c) when DW comes in for relief, he will be balls to the wall
or
       a) DJ continues his past of not playing every snap,
       b) DW comes in and plays balls to the wall
       c) DW earns the starting job back, we are a better defense for it

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

by Lanier63 on Sep 7, 2010 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

DW and DJ

yeah, weird. It seems to me DW played better and earned the job. I fear that they are worried DJ has fragile ego and will start crying and whining. I hope it is not the case that they are coddling him. It would not fit their MO to coddle him at team expense.

Chiefs WILL!

by kabrink on Sep 7, 2010 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Belcher seems to be the guy they are pleased with on the other side and for some reason the NEVER play....

…Demorrio and Belcher together…. I suspect it has more to do with that than it does with Williams performance…. I don’t know, it is a mystery.

So you got the fax. So why didn't you add it to the resume? What do you mean? Of course martial arts training is relevant.

by BigRedChief on Sep 7, 2010 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

If they're going to both play a lot anyway

I wouldn’t be surprised if DJ’s ego was the deciding factor. I think DW can handle the backup role better, and perhaps even use it as a motivating tool. DJ? Not so much.

Some guys respond better to a pat on the back, while others respond better to a kick in the butt.

If nothing else, all the people with DJ man crushes can stop whining for at least one week.

by Tarkus on Sep 7, 2010 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I get the feeling

That DJ did exactly what was asked of him and played his position well. On two of DW’s sacks DJ could have run right through the wide open hole as easily as DW did. If DW was that much better they would have him starting. If someone has a fragile ego I just don’t see these guys coddling them, they haven’t shown any of that so far. Besides they benched DJ last year and he handled it professionally and came back this year determined to win the job, I’d say his ego isn’t so fragile at all. Only time will tell if he can keep his head out of his ass for a whole season, but I sure as hell hope he can, he’s a monster when he’s focused.

by just a guy on Sep 7, 2010 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Not often enough but

In the Broncos game he had Two Pick sixes for 105 yards, 4 pd, 5 tackles. That’s a damn good game for a corner let alone a coverage linebacker. If he can play up to that potential he’ll be one of the best around, but again, he hasn’t shown that he can stay focused, until apparently this preseason, if he continues that he will be great, if he doesn’t then DW wins his job back.

by just a guy on Sep 7, 2010 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

How many games had he played

prior to that Broncos game?

You think that might have been an aberration, rather than a sign of things to come? At what point does potential turn into bust?

I really think its langford or daniels for the next move that is made this season(if they add someone)

notice how subtle it was that not only did d-wash go from 3rd FS to SS, but to 2nd at SS

I dont put anything into these charts, but still…its interesting that he wasnt just put after langford. might be a sign that langford is an odd man out if they find the right position(I have no real feelings either way on langford, havent seen enough of him)

From ESPN's Williamson

What ya think, seems like one key (pressure on Rivers), is not aligning with starters -

“Three things Kansas City needs to work on this week in preparation for Monday’s opener against visiting San Diego:

Feed off the energy: Kansas City is going to be rocking. Monday night games in Kansas City are rare these days and this is the first regular-season game at the renovated Arrowhead Stadium. Add that there is legitimate intrigue about this team and the atmosphere is going to be special. The Chiefs have to be prepared to take advantage of the excitement and strike early, showing the Chargers they are in for a tough night.

Rush the passer: One way of slowing down San Diego star quarterback Philip Rivers is to put pressure on him. The question is can the Chiefs do it? They’ve had trouble getting to quarterbacks the past two years. However, the Chiefs did show some ability in the area late in the preseason. Linebackers Tamba Hali, Demorrio Williams and Andy Studebaker must work to make Rivers uncomfortable.

Run it down their throats: Kansas City potentially has something special in the running game with Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones. They have the chance to wear teams down and really set the tone for a lot of Kansas City victories. The book on San Diego has been that they can be beaten in the running game. That’s how the Jets knocked them out of the playoffs last year. if the Chiefs have a chance to win this game, it will be because the running game dominates the game."

I have to comment about all of the posters who wonder why Charles is second to Jones.

First of all, who cares who starts. I never understood that. Who plays is what matters. Haley is doing exactly what he should be doing with Charles. Many will not like to hear this, but Charles is unproven.
Now I am a huge charles fan, but he has not played a full season as a big time back yet. Who knows what he will do in 16 or more games. It would not be smart to just throw him up as our number 1 right now.
Last year teams didn’t have tape on Charles. This year they do. And if were going to compare numbers, Thomas Jones has great numbers. Much better than Charles in his 3/4 of a season. I assure you that Charles is going to get his touches whether he starts or not.
And to the posters who have asked if TJ is another LJ? You can apologize early here. Hopefully the preseason showed that.

by Enite on Sep 7, 2010 1:35 PM CDT reply actions

umm..

who said tj is another lj? He works his ass off and is basically the exact opposite of LJ.
Teams didnt have tape on Charles? The broncos had like 8 weeks of tape on him and he ran for over 250.
What numbers are you comparing? Charles’ yards over 2 years to Jones’ what? 10 yrs? I hope jones has better numbers or he shouldnt be in the league.
How is it not smart to have Charles as our number 1? because he’s unproven? well dont you want to find out what he can do with a full season as a big time back…
You never understood why someone cares who starts? well typically the best players start in every sport at every level. just because this year’s chiefs have a situation where the starter may or may not get the most touches doesnt mean the people who are thinking of a traditional starter are crazy.

Ultimately, I agree with you. The “starting RB” title doesnt matter for this team. But please support your argument with points that make sense

Casey W starting - motivated to continue his Ironman stats

“Since missing the 2001 season opener with the Chiefs following an appendectomy, Wiegmann has made 143 consecutive starts and taken 9,078 consecutive snaps at center, the longest active streak by any NFL offensive lineman. His goal is to reach 10,000 consecutive snaps, which would come in week 14 or 15 of the season, assuming he wins the starting center job.” (http://www.kansascity.com/2010/08/18/2160025/chiefs-center-wiegmann-coming.html}

Still, I can’t believe that would influence Haley in the least. These two will continue to battle nose-to-nose for the whole season.

Strive for greatness, Red and Gold.

Overall

I really like this depth chart compared to last season.

I think this ONE year made a huge difference in the strength of the roster, top-to-bottom.

Last season, they were cutting prior starters, and scrambling to find guys that can play the new schemes and getting them to start right away.

This season, they cut mostly UDFAs, and the first 2 spots on the depth chart at each position are now filled with actual, NFL-caliber players.

I like the DJ/Belcher combo for athleticism and playmaking, though I was impressed with DW getting some preseason sacks, so we know he CAN do it… remember, those were mostly due to specific blitzes called by Romeo, and the front 3 doing their job… so any of the LBs SHOULD be able make those same plays.

I think the Chiefs are in a good place with DW and DJ both seemingly able to make plays, so they can rotate however they want.

this should be the most exciting Chiefs team in years! Most major needs filled with playmakers, and the league's best coaching staff... 10-6 a possibility?

Center

AND, I’m glad to see Casey starting at Center.

I liked how the OL looked with him in there…

and, even if Rudy played at an equal level… his value is greater as a 3-position-backup. Casey likely couldn’t play all 3 interior spots in case of injury, so Rudy carries some value there if he’s needed.

It’s nice to have depth on the OL, and I think the Chiefs are 1 OT away from having very good depth.

+1 Stag

Looking at everything this year makes me understand how bad off we really were in the last 2 years. Many people on our second team this year were starters getting a major chunk of playing time last year. In fact, our second team in the preseason this year reminds me so much of our starters the last 2 or 3 years that its scary. No pass rush, majority of the secondary confused…..last 2 years were hard to watch.

by Enite on Sep 7, 2010 2:43 PM CDT reply actions

KC will be trading away draft picks for oline help if any injuries with so little depth.

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Sep 7, 2010 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

The DJ start can be attributed to one thing

Antonio Gates.
Watch Dj won’t start against a no-TE team.
Or if he does, DW will get more snaps.
To my eyes, DJ plays better against a screen\TE throwing team (that would be the Chargers at least this first week) and DW plays better against a downhill running team. Heck DW may even start against Cleveland(I don’t think their TE is all that)
