16 games 16 beers (pt. 1 weeks 1-8)

Spaten-optimator_medium

via www.brew-dudes.com

Under a week until we get to real meaningful football. As much as I like the preseason, I'm glad it is over and we can finally get to the games that count. This post is going to highlight a plan that I put together over the weekend. While some of you traditionalists will stick to your one and only beer for game day. This is going to be a weekly breakdown of each and every beer I will consume starting with week 1 and going through week 8 in this post. Shortly before week 9 starts I will let you all know the beers I will consume to finish out the regular season, and hopefully have up a postseason beer breakdown!

Obviously these are all my own opinions. I do not encourage or promote underage drinking. Hopefully this post will be something where all the beer lovers on AP can get together. Im very interested in hearing about your local brews seeing as how many on here are from far away and hopefully one day will have the opportunity to taste them all.

"Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." -
  --  Benjamin Franklin

Week 1: San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs. Brew of choice, Spaten Optimator.

One of my all time favorite beers that I just starting drinking two years ago. While on my honeymoon in Disneyworld, my wife and I stopped at Epcot, the only place you can drink in Disneyworld. In Epcot they had the little Germany setup and immediately I tried this beer. Spaten Optimator is from Bavaria, and pretty hard to find in Oklahoma. Luckily being a Marine stationed at an Army base, they have alot of German connections here like the food and festivals. Apparently someone else here has a taste for Spaten Optimator and I just recently found it. This is the beer I have decided to open the season with!

Week 2: Kansas City Chiefs at Cleveland Browns. Brew of choice, Boulevard Pale Ale.

Uhh the Browns, seriously why can't we beat them? Week 2's beer is one that I'm sure many of you are familiar with. I have never been to the Boulevard Brewery and this is the only option of Boulevard I can purchase so far away from Kansas City. If the game turns out anything like last years, by the fourth quarter I may be pouring a few shots of Jack in with these beers!

Week 3: San Francisco 49ers at Kansas City Chiefs. Brew of choice, Budweiser.

Back in the days when the 49ers had Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, the beer of choice for my old man was Budweiser. Im going to drink Budweiser week 3 to reminisce about the good old days. The Chiefs back in those days fielded pretty good teams and I can always remember hearing the beer pop open on those Sundays. Budweiser is one of my favorites believe it or not.

Week 4: Bye week, Im open to suggestions here if anyone has one.

Week 5: Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts. Brew of choice, whatever they serve at the stadium.

As of right now, my wife and I will be attending this football game. We haven't bought tickets yet, but this is probably going to be the one Chiefs game I get to attend all season. Seeing as how the wife is a Colts fan, I hope they have some good brew at the Stadium. If the plan falls through and we don't get to attend, I have selected this as Bud Light weekend!

Week 6: Kansas City Chiefs at Houston Texans. Brew of choice, Sam Adams Octoberfest.

Seeing as how by this time Autumn should be in full swing, and Halloween is only two Sunday's away, I will start my seasonal beer intake. Top the list every year for me is Octoberfest by Sam Adams. I have actualy already been scouring the stores for it here and have as of yet been unsuccessful in locating any. By the 17th of October when this game takes place Im confident it will be in the stores and ready for me to drink!

Week 7: Jacksonville Jaguars at Kansas City Chiefs. Brew of choice, Spaten Oktoberfest.

After drinking Spaten Optimator at Disney, and finding it locally, I tried the Oktoberfest. This is a perfect autumn beer. Not my all time favorite in that catagory, but pretty high up there. Its actually ranked number one here. I don't hold much stock in the rankings of beers by others, just like mock drafts, and point spreads, if you haven't tried this beer I would highly encourage it. This is a week that the Chiefs may be on top of the world if we do good the previous two weeks, or yeah we could be flat-lining. I will have a little satisfaction that Sunday no matter the outcome due to this brew.

Rogue_dead_guy_ale_2_medium

Week 8: Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs. Brew of choice, Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

This game, being Halloween and all calls for this beer. All the Chiefs pumpkins will be carved and setting out front. Hopefully the pesky trick or treaters will stay away until after we win. I really want to celebrate a good Halloween, see all the cool costumes and people dressed up at Arrowhead and sit back and enjoy a highly celebrated beer. I actually saved a bottle of this (empty) after I enrolled at a local eateries World Beer Tour. Its very good and just makes you feel Halloween.

So that is weeks 1-8! I will be back closer to the start of week 9 like I said and have the end of the year beer list. To close out the season you are going to see alot more beers that are widely brewed and distributed such as my new last game of the year favorite seeing as how we are usually down in the dumps Milwaukees Beast! Last year was a pleasant surprise though.

Like I mentioned up above I'm very interested in reading about some of the local brews available to all of you out there. Drop a few lines in the comments and let me know about the brew and I will try to find it and try it out. Also does anyone here work in a brewery? Other than working for the Chiefs in some capacity I think working at a brewery would be flat out awesome, especially in the beer tasting department!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat

This beer tastes amazing and I drink it in Denver weekly to further my support for Kansas City!

Can you really only have 1 beer per game?

I would be a ruined man if I could only drink one beer per game!

Quality

I usually buy a 6 of something good then switch to cheep. After 6, depending on how fast they go down, the flavor starts to blur anyway.

Sir, not to beer snob you but in the memory of PARADEBULATION GAME TIME DRINKS we must object

We must say, strike any allusion to Bud Light from this list. Fact, they serve both Bud Heavy and Boulevard at the stadium (not to mention guinness if you hunt for it). We won’t quibble about Bud heavy’s inclustion, but Rouge dead guy isn’t a pale ale, it’s more of an amber or a bock. Rouge does have an Imperial XS pale ale which is well worth checking out if you’re cool with one of those $6 24oz craft bottles.

by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Sep 7, 2010 10:31 AM CDT reply actions

haha lots of people like Bud Light though

and Coors Light for some reason. And correct on the Rogue, for some reason I typed Pale in there and didn’t mean to! I didn’t know anyone else had a list around here so forgive me, if this is something that gets frontpaged by you and people join in I will delete the post now and wait for yours?

I could work for Anheiser-Busch.

They could take my morning beer piss after drinking REAL beer and bottle it. On second hand, it’s probably still got too much flavor and hops.

And my 1-8:
Week 1: Arrogant Bastard Ale, Stone Brewery – Located in San Diego
Week 2: Newcastle Brown Ale, Heineken International – Because I don’t know of any Ohio brews I like, and we’re playing the Browns, so a Brown ale fits.
Week 3: Anchor Steam Beer, Anchor Steam Brewery – Located in SF
Bye Week: Ad Astra, Free State Brewery
Week 5: Dreadnaught IPA, Three Floyds Brewery – Located in IN
Weeks 6, 7, and 8: Any combination of Oktoberfests, including (but not necessarily limited to): Saranac Octoberfest, Dogtoberfest, The Kaiser, Left Hand Octoberfest, and Schlafly Octoberfest.

I'll put together the wine list...

yeah, that’s right, the wine list. Deal with it.

(Editor’s Note: Sudden is quite a beer fan as well, however, since the commentors of this wonderful site are amply familiar with the varieties of beer available, Sudden feels obligated to share his favorite California vintages with his midwest bretheren. Although he can be coerced into doing a scotch list instead, although it’d likely be Johnnie Walker Gold every week).

The trickiest part for me will be putting wines on the list that will be available in KC

Living in Southern California, I get a little spoiled in terms of available wines. I’m also a member of a few vineyards that only sell to club members or tasting room walk-ins with no available purchases in stores and such, even specialty ones. I’ll also have to find a wine every week that pairs well with bbq, since that is what Chiefs football is all about.

haha yeah

being in Oklahoma there isnt much of a selection. Actually parts of Missouri are becoming converted in vineyards. I saw that Missouri was on the up and coming list with lots of new vineyards being created each year. Driving through Missouri this summer I saw lots of signs for new vineyards around the St. Louis area.

Not a bad idea jrcnc

mind if I steal/build it a bit and create a cigar/scotch pairing for 16 weeks? I’ll take a bottle of single malt over a 6-pack of beer any day!

On a beer note, I have a friend that regularly homebrews. I helped him bottle a barley wine yesterday (9.5%!!) and tried a vanilla porter that he just kegged. He didnt like the porter but I thought it was excellent, except closer to a chocolate stout.

To make a bad day worse, spend it wishing for the impossible.

by chiefsandcigars on Sep 7, 2010 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

I would be grateful for the scotch/cigar recommendations.

I do a cigar night with some buddies every Thursday. Bad part is that the cigar bar we go to doesn’t have the required license for serving liquor on-site, so we end up getting a cabernet sauvignon when I really would love a glass of single malt for such an occassion.

I have found some wines that pair well with cigars

especially merlots, CS, shiraz, and, of course, port. Ports go well with the heavier/darker cigars while some of the lighter, spicier cigars are pretty decent with the merlots, CS, and pretty much any decent red wine. I have yet to find a cigar that will pair with a white wine (other than a white port I found in missouri)…it seems that even the mildest of cigars will overwhelm a white wine.
